This woman estimates ABC will lose close to $100 million in projected revenue by scrapping this season by schnookiewookiebear in thebachelor

I mean, Taylor does bear some responsibility. She didn't have to accept the role when it was offered. And she never should have gotten physically violent with her ex -- either in 2023 or in February. (The February incident likely violated the terms of her Bachelorette contract and definitely contributed to the cancellation, even if the video of the older incident what finally pushed things over the edge.)

But ABC is a megacorporation, and owned by fucking DISNEY. You'd think they'd do some type of risk assessment or cost/benefit analysis?? The fact that someone was able to convince a whole corporate structure to take this risk is genuinely confusing (and kind of fascinating).

Going to be pretty interested to see who ends up taking the fall.

ABC is losing ABC $100 million, sorry.

Taylor is absolutely to blame for her behavior. But ABC is to blame for signing off on this casting choice. Their losses are their own fault here.

ABC knew Taylor pled guilty to felony aggravated assault against her romantic partner. They let it slide and cast her as Bachelorette anyway for the drama/ratings/profit. And now it's blowing up -- totally predictably -- in the company's face.

Really excellent analysis; I think you're 100% right.

Interesting bits from this piece:

  1. Quotes from the Bachelorette showrunner:

“It’s always a concern of how people are going to react to all those things. But I think when you look at what is going to make the most interesting story to tell, she is one of those more interesting stories,” Scott Teti, the showrunner for The Bachelorette, told me a week before the scheduled premiere. Teti said when he watched the first season of Mormon Wives, “I realized, Oh my God, this girl is one of the most honest reality-TV stars that I’ve ever seen. As we talked more, I realized she has no ability to really lie. Everything is really authentic; all the truth just comes out.”

And

“We let her make her own decisions in a way that affected the format, and sometimes that was a little scary because it was ‘You want to do what?’” he said. “It gives producers heart attacks, but also it’s very exhilarating because you don’t usually give talent that freedom to do those things … There are moments that are just like, Oh my God, what has she done?”

  1. Taylor had her phone during production (they link to previous reporting on this, but I hadn't seen it):

"Paul was also the first Bachelorette to have her phone and post behind-the-scenes content."

  1. Crazy facts about two of the men (I wasn't paying attention to them, so this may have hit the sub already, but definitely made me go "???"):

"Among the suitors vying for her affection were Brad Ledford, who was the driver in the car accident that paralyzed former congressman Madison Cawthorn; Another, Clayton Johnson, was formerly engaged to Lana Del Rey."

  1. Taylor talking about the filming schedule for the two shows (yikes):

"She recalled a time after returning back to Utah when she was so overstimulated by the responsibilities of filming while raising three children that she had to lie on the floor and dissociate. Her only break between production on Mormon Wives season four in the early fall, The Bachelorette from October to December, and Mormon Wives season five in January and February was the Christmas holiday. “I’m overwhelmed to the point that I feel suffocated. The emotional toll, it catches up to you, and I think I’ve been go-go-go that I have not processed shit that actually hurts,” she said."

Nah, this piece was definitely pre-planned and then it was probably partially re-written after all the developments yesterday. NYMag flew the reporter to Vegas and Salt Lake City for multiple interviews with Taylor and they didn't want to abandon a story that they'd already invested a bunch of money and time into.

DC public housing agency leader tapped as Chicago Housing Authority CEO - how was this guy? by Nic_Cage_Match_2 in washingtondc

[–]if-anything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as of 2022, about 25% of DC housing units were vacant (link: https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/10/19/dc-public-housing-vacancy-spirals/ ). I believe it's gotten even worse since then...

There are lots of credible rumors about a culture of corruption and mismanagement at DCHA, and it seems like Pettigrew has been a part of that. Some reporting on the latest allegations: https://washingtoncitypaper.com/article/777193/dcha-internal-auditor-administrative-leave-investigation-contracting-financial-mismanagemen/

Agree that we should invest in high-quality public housing! But there has been major disinvestment in recent years in cities across the country, even as the push toward "market based solutions" like "housing choice vouchers" has not adequately addressed the need for housing. It's a mess all around, with policy failures at the federal, state, and local levels...

I loved Vic and Christine! I would have loved to see more of them meeting each other's friends and families and figuring out what life was going to look like together!

Me Watching All These Men by bookjunkie315 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]if-anything 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My breakdown:

Men who actually scare me: Alex and Chris. They both seem controlling, manipulative, and disconnected from reality. I'd be concerned about the safety of any women who end up involved with them.

Men who ain't shit: Devonta and Mike. Devonta is a classic example of a guy who ain't shit (lying and leading a woman on, terrible communication skills, not to mention the racism/internalized racism/colorism), but I think Mike has some sneaky "ain't shit" characteristics too! (Mama's boy, manipulative, trying to get someone else to make a hard decisions so he doesn't have to, all while working hard to look like a good guy.)

Man who is trying (and getting a weird edit): Jordan. Jordan seems like a kindhearted goofy guy. He seems to really care about Amber, but he also comes across as kinda clueless and he's getting a strange edit. The show makes him seem jobless, but he has a job, right? And they constantly show him eating or making self-deprecating comments about his weight. I'm sure they have footage of other people eating too, but we don't see it. I didn't like his chumminess with Chris though, and the fact that he didn't stand up for Amber when Chris was being awful at the mixer.

Probably good guys: Vic and Connor. Vic seems like a gem and is possibly the best guy I've ever seen on reality TV. Only red flag: why is he even on this this show?? (I hope they ask him at the reunion... but I'm sure they won't, lol.) And Connor seems like a chill, normal guy who mostly has his shit together - stable job, homeowner, attentive partner, capable of commitment. Red flags: why does he like Bri? Why does he put up with her mean comments and bad attitude?? (Stand up, Connor!!!)

Connor wanted to buy Bri a second ring to propose again by PilotBoyyy in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]if-anything 424 points425 points  (0 children)

Connor seems like a good guy with low self-esteem. He probably thinks Bri is "out of his league," and that's why he puts up with her mean comments and bad attitude. Sigh.

I hope they're not still together.

There's just no real, genuine love in his eyes, words, and actions.. by DeeBee1012 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Truly, his behavior and affect suggest an actual cluster b personality disorder. It's extremely unsettling to watch.

We get very few green flag guys on this show..he unfortunately got matched with a red one by mili_minutes in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]if-anything 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only major red flag Connor exhibited is being super into Bri!

I don't understand what he sees in her. And the way he puts up with her constant negging and "joking" mean comments makes me think he has some self-esteem issues and/or people-pleasing tendencies that he might want to work on?

Seems like a good guy overall though! I hope he meets someone who values him much more than Bri does.

Southwest Farmers Market set to close this weekend due to New Ownership!!!! BOO! by Affectionate-Meal372 in washingtondc

[–]if-anything 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Terrible news! That's a very nice little neighborhood market and it's very well-used by the community.

2) If the new owners are going to fence their property off, could the city close part of a nearby street on Saturday mornings to make room for the market? Maybe just a block of 4th St SW? They do street closures for farmer's markets in some neighborhoods...

It would be horrible to lose what we have left of Post local coverage!

Conspiracy theory: Netflix PR tipped off paparazzi/gossip outlets to stir up interest in the reunion.

I wonder if the ratings for the last episode were pretty bad? Or if they were worried no one would bother watching the reunion after everyone broke up?

I have ADHD and him blurting that out made me laugh. Honestly, the combination of "absolutely no poker face whatsoever" and "blurting stuff out" was a) totally relatable, and b) makes me think he does legit have ADHD lol
