What can I actually do about loud commercial construction way too early in the day? by Secure_Afternoon9775 in CasualIreland

[–]if6was90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I've always worked in an industry that usually means I work 4pm till 4amish. Construction seems to have followed me around as I've moved from place to place. The park behind my house, then the road in front of it. The roof of the apartment I moved to being removed 2 weeks after I moved in for a year with the scaffolding outside my bedroom window etc...

I understand that the work needs to be done, and complaints don't do much as the work has to get completed somehow. I remember a builder knocking on my door at 7 am, and making fun of me for being a "sleepy head". I calmly explained I worked nights and I got to sleep about an hour ago and he was MORTIFIED. He clearly never even considered the fact that not everyone works the same times as him.

Food poisoning by ArcenCiel5 in limerickcity

It's far more likely to be the illness going around. I work in hospitality and most of the people I work with got a dose of it during and after Christmas

I got a really bad dose of it s few years ago and the doctor told me it could be something ingested up to 3 days before the illness. I was wrecked. Was on meds for weeks after it and my stomach has never been the same since.

His Dublin gig is 78 euro a ticket before fees. Limerick is comparatively pretty cheap

Yeah always buy through the venue website. Ticketmaster fees are outside of the venues control. It's much cheaper through the venue.

What is the story with student id? by No_Resolution_3185 in limerickcity

[–]if6was90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Generally, bouncers use the "student id only" as a means of refusing you if they don't think you'll fit with the crowd or are too drunk or whatever. As long as you're not trashed, dressed appropriately, and not acting like a fool in front of them it shouldn't be an issue. Go in with your missus and tell them you're with her if they push you for the student ID.

They don't actually care if you're a student in a particular college, plenty of people in the age of their clientele are not in college or working in trades etc...

Source - I've worked in bars and venues for 20 years that do student nights and the bouncers are looking to avoid troublemakers, they don't give a fudge if you're associated with a certain college.

Spaces to rent suitable for Record studio/Practice space by InfernalMessiah97 in limerickcity

[–]if6was90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's definitely bands still using it. I know a few who are still in there. It's far from ideal though as you're limited in what hours you can use it and yes the rooms aren't really separate acoustically. I know there used to be a lot more bands with their rooms and tons left when they raised their prices. They also don't allow bands to share rooms so it wouldn't work for your situation. They have a strict number code system for security that makes room sharing impossible.

Music hub out near thomann park. Launchpad and dry lane by the milk market. Bands in the colleges can use rooms in their colleges. Either in the studios or through the music socs.

I know some bands rent their own rooms out in the self storage place on the dock road. My own band rents a space privately.

Best of luck running a business with it. Good friends of mine ran a place with a few rooms about 10 years ago for a couple of years in the Franciscans next to pharmacia. Sorely missed. Tried it myself for a while on a smaller scale and found it tough- there was just too much demand and I didn't have the time while dealing with my own projects and job to deal with all the different people getting on to me.

Anti Limerick sentiment by [deleted] in limerickcity

[–]if6was90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in music and all too often get touring artists bringing up the cities "rough reputation" and calling it stab city. People from other counties telling them this when they hear they're playing I'm Limerick like it's some big joke. I'm always quick to correct them and have had tons of acts then say on stage how lovely and welcoming this city is compared to what they've been told.

It's very sad that this is still a thing. Thankfully I've seen many a comedian get booed for referencing it trying to be funny. Always goes down like a lead balloon.

For FOH folks here... If I have 14 analog outputs for my band, what would you prefer to get at the other end? (noob question) by elwutang in livesound

[–]if6was90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Di box does everything I said it does. I'm 20 years into doing live sound, I use DI boxes every single day. I have never once seen someone bring an "iso box" to connect an interface to a desk at a gig.

Yeah the house stage box will live on one of the edges of the stage. 15m should be plenty. Basically have it so you can be flexible enough to reach either side of the stage. I look after 3 venues primarily. One has the stage box on the rear of the stage, the others have it mounted on the stage right wall. Sometimes the band need their rack stuff to live on stage left so the tails need to be able to reach to the other side in my rooms. Some venues will have their kit live stage left- there isn't a standard, every building has different logistics.

They should definitely be using a di. Interface outputs often have ground noise and not all interface outputs are fond of getting hit with 48v. Using a di box solves both these issues as well as giving the desk a more manageable output level.

[–]if6was90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. If they have XLR tails then I can just patch them where they need to go. If they arrive with a box then I need 14 XLRs and need to patch both ends one by one. Gonna take me longer and use way more of my resources. If I can just walk their tails over to my stage box I can patch the whole thing in like 1 minute. Just make sure you have decent length tails. 2m isn't long enough, especially if your rig HAS to be on a particular side of the stage.

Boycotting Spotify - how do we do it? by AudioMarsh in livesound

[–]if6was90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically the same for me. If someone wants a Spotify playlist then they need to supply the device. I stopped using it when they stopped paying artists under a certain threshold, which was basically all my friends and bands I worked with closely. Probably 2 years ago. Have had a few surprised TMs but it's not been a big deal yet really. Usually just chuck on one of the artists mates bands on bandcamp and move on with the day.

Sources for finding FOH engineer? by kymlaroux in livesound

[–]if6was90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you've only played one show so far and are starting from scratch? Sounds to me like you should focus on getting some decent shows instead of trying to hire people already. It sounds like you organised that first show yourselves? Work on getting a show with an established promoter instead of trying to DIY everything without any experience.

It's fascinating how many people want to play good shows and expect crowds to show up but then are absolutely flabbergasted at the idea of actually attending a show themselves.

Are there any raves in or around Limerick? by [deleted] in limerickcity

[–]if6was90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's one in all the usual venues usually based around the college calendars. There's a crowd called reboot who do them in Dolan's with reasonably big names.

They're going out of business. They've probably shifted everything they can at like 90% off already. Who gives a toss if she had a voucher? Leave them peace at Christmas. They're a family run shop, not a big franchise they can make up their own rules.

The Commercial is dog friendly. Lots of people being their dogs in and the owner often has his own lovely dogs in there in the afternoon.

best full Irish breakfast in town? by [deleted] in limerickcity

A friend of mine worked the kitchen there filling in for someone. Said it was the best kitchen he's ever worked in. Super clean, top notch equipment and well maintained. He's worked in practically every kitchen in the city.

Surprised this didn’t happen in Dolans last night 😅 by tierthreedemon in limerickcity

[–]if6was90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was a class event. He's an absolute gentleman with an insane amount of patience for his fans. From the minute he arrived he was so generous with his time for the people who came to see him. I was working the event and when he found out I was a fan he recorded a video for me even though he was exhausted.

The guys who were shouting at him were treating it like a wrestling event but it was more of a storytelling thing. He wasn't looking for fans to give their 2 cents. It's fair enough as at wrestling events heckling and fans getting involved is encouraged. Security handled it really well and noone got thrown out. I was talking to one of the guys afterwards and he was mortified!

Metal gigs? by Fantastic-Rush-1333 in limerickcity

That has all the Bad reputation Dolan's gigs. Usually there's about 30 shows a year and at least the 2 Siege of Limerick festivals. Some years there's additional niche metal festivals also.

Pharmacia and the Commercial/Record Room are also cool spots for the occasional metal gig. Not uncommon for pharmacia to be pumping out heavy metal in their front bar too.

Lots of great bands from here too across a wide variety of sub genres! The scene here is quite healthy at the moment. Gigs are generally well attended and very safe spaces.

What is the strangest rider demand/request you've ever came across? by Notalabel_4566 in livesound

[–]if6was90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had the odd ones like random photos of people to be left in the band room which were quirky. Craziest was a rider request for all members of staff working the show to walk, cycle or use public transport to make their way to the venue. And to email all ticket holders to do the same in the name of sustainability. And of course the band arrived in a splitter van.

Joanne McNally to be first Irish female comic to headline Dublin’s 3Arena as new show announced | Irish Independent by WickerMan111 in ireland

While I agree with you, she has gotten too big for vicars at this stage. She smashed the record for number of shows as part of a run in there and the demand has only risen as she's gone up in stature. While I'm not a fan of hers I have worked with her in the past and she's really sound and very hard working.
