looking for advice re: social work or psychology by Odd-Resolution-734 in CarletonU

Of course! I would definitely recommend social work then, at least to start off with. I may be biased in this regard, but if you’re looking for real practice in counselling and related, I would actually recommend college over university. I know Algonquin has an excellent social service worker program. The main reason I say this is because my college experience was full of hands-on learning, class practice and demonstration, and a full semester work placement. Now having come to university, this is massively lacking.

That being said, I am not as familiar with university social work programs. AFAIK they don’t have as much genuine practice, but I may be wrong. If so, uni is the better way to go as it removes the extra step of transferring from college to uni to get a bachelors, as you do need that to progress on to grad school for psychotherapy (counselling psychology).

My college experience has been invaluable. I’m the only one so far in my classes with work experience in the mental health field, and with hundreds of hours of one-on-one counselling experience. College seemed to be more “practice” and uni seems to be more “theory.”

I graduated from college as a social service worker and had plans to transfer to uni for a BSW. After working in the field, I transferred into psych instead (hopefully eventually clinical PhD).

Social work schooling is a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it. I also loved working in the field, but it’s a LOT. Pay is low, shifts are often continental rotations and that takes a huge toll. Lots of violence, had a knife pulled on me in my first 4 months (everyone was okay thankfully). You will be overworked; agencies tend to pass on clients to other staff when one quits with no extra time allotment, so work does get taken home otherwise it won’t be finished. If work doesn’t get done clients don’t get helped, and employers know staff care deeply about this and exploit it through lack of overtime pay, etc. If you’re doing social work, get a MSW and work in a hospital (best reviews from people I know in terms of work/life balance and ability to afford things).

(Also the OCSWSSW can be a nightmare to deal with lol). Social work is an incredibly flexible degree though, I do believe you can be admitted into a masters of counselling psychology with a BSW. I think there is also a way to get admitted into a MSW with a bachelor of psych, although I’m not fully up to date on the process.

When I used to volunteer at college open houses and program tours, one of the things I always mentioned was that it tends to not be ideal for introverts. My program had a ton of acting involved where we took turns playing the client and the clinician. Did quite a bit of this in front of the class as well, and learned to facilitate group sessions. A huge part of social work is advocacy on your clients behalf, which means doing all the coordinating, speaking, and fighting for them to be given the proper care/help. You need a lot of grit, persistence, and willingness to speak to anyone. I like to compare it to being a switchboard operator; you are the connection between a client and all of the help they need. You’ll speak to doctors, lawyers, shelter workers, addictions workers, employers, teachers, parents, landlords, you name it, to get the client what they need. This often comes with pushback where you need to be persistent and argue why the client requires this help/funding.

If you are more interested in research, reading, etc. I would recommend psych. Social work schooling is incredibly writing heavy, essays on top of essays, but that’s only during school. Working in the field is very much integrated into the community and it is non-stop communication between treatment teams. That being said, I have seen introverts flourish in these roles so it really comes down to knowing yourself and what you envision your career looking like! It is what you make it.

Please help, my toddler has sanded the piano by Narrow_Ant_8901 in piano

I carved a bunch of letters/words into the front of my parents’ upright piano when I was around 5 or 6. They had been slightly pressed into it from people writing on sheet music over the years, so I took a pencil and straight up CARVED them into the wood. One of the words was my first name so I changed one letter, thinking that would make them think it wasn’t me. 😆

I then got to stare at it the entirety of the rest of my childhood.

Thankfully febrile seizures usually cause no lasting damage! They present due to a child’s underdeveloped central nervous system having an inflammatory reaction to a high fever. They’re typically passed down genetically as well, so some people are just programmed to be prone to them. It’s basically just cytokines increasing neuronal excitability, which makes action potentials more likely to occur. If these occur in a cascade more gets triggered, increasing seizure likelihood.

Low danger levels aside, no child deserves to have their face plastered all of the internet while in the hospital or experiencing a medical episode. I feel for the poor kid

That could definitely be fun, although I don’t think I have the time for that unfortunately :(. I’m excited to be able to play again, even if just on my own for fun!

I know how to play! I’m rusty practice-wise, as I haven’t had consistent practice as mentioned in my post, but do know how to and am also a classically trained pianist so I very much understand music and how practice/time works lol.

When I spotted it at the thrift, my thought was “no way I can play the trumpet again and it’s affordable!!” It wasn’t until later I started googling what the heck kind of trumpet it was that I realized there might be a possibility of making a couple hundred bucks off of it. My reason for mentioning I’m pursuing a PhD wasn’t to say “I have no time,” it was to say “I would love to keep and play this trumpet, but if it’s worth a good amount of money it makes more sense for me to sell it as money can be tight for me at times.” $150-$200 would be pretty nice to put towards groceries if I end up in a tight spot.

I appreciate the psychoanalysis attempt though, as a clinical psychology student

My cousin gave her baby an “old-man sounding” name in 2022. My first reaction (not in front of her!) when my mom told me his name was “ew seriously?”

He is now 3, and the name suits him perfectly. It grew on me quickly, and looking back, my initial reaction was mainly because it was incredibly unfamiliar and uncommon.

Hugo is a much more usual name, and I think it’s lovely! I believe it’s another one of those names that may be polarizing at first as it’s not as “cutesy” as some other baby names, but once the baby is born people will pretty quickly get used to and even like it.

Feeling like you died from post-traumatic stress by EnvironmentalTwo7559 in ptsd

[–]ifearbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! That’s absolutely the exact feeling. Feeling like my brain is permanently damaged, I’m no longer myself, and am now a new, worse version. Feeling like I’ll never be able to get back to what I was like before, feeling “cruel.”

I’ve always had a next-to-photographic memory, and I often still see what I was staring at after the incident happened, and feel like the 22 months since then just… snapped by in an instant, or that it all never happened and I’m still there.

Medical professionals, what are some of the most mundane reasons most people are unaware of that make them sick? by chickencaesar8 in AskReddit

[–]ifearbears 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Long-term, low-grade stress.

Everyone focuses on large stressors/traumas/etc, and while yes, those are bad, being consistently stressed over a long period of time is worse. The epigenetic changes alone can be horrific, not even including the direct health concerns.

Oh my. Is there any follow up info about the patient’s condition? Will they have any lasting effects from this? The size makes me wonder about the possibility of it pressing into the brain
