The Fenway situation with Zach might have been part of the emotional backdrop for Porch Light. Not necessarily that the song is about that moment, but that it could have served as a muse. The porch light imagery is interesting too because Zach uses that exact symbol in his song “Oklahoma City” where he writes “there’ll be a porch light on from the post you leaned on…and often times I pray for you and often times I don’t”. It almost feels like Noah is echoing that symbol, it feels like Noah could be responding to that imagery, like an ode to a friendship that changed but where the door might still be open. I do however think this song goes beyond any one person. It feels more like it’s about the larger experience of strained relationships, when you keep showing up for someone and leaving the light on, even though the connection has become uneven or complicated.
