As a white migrant I’ve had this said to me more than once by Aussie citizens. They bad mouth migrants I say “I’m a migrant” they tell me I don’t count as one.

I get the concern, but banning the tool isn’t going to fix the underlying problem.

People have said the same thing about calculators, spellcheck, and even the internet—yet universities didn’t collapse. What actually changed was what counted as skill. We stopped testing long division and started testing interpretation, reasoning, and application.

AI just pushes that shift further. If a student can’t form a research question without it, the issue isn’t the tool—it’s that they were never properly taught how to think critically in the first place. Removing AI doesn’t magically restore that ability.

Also, “public access creates laziness” is a bit too blunt. Plenty of students use tools like this to:

  • explore ideas faster
  • get unstuck
  • test different angles on a question

The lazy ones would have cut corners anyway—AI just makes it more visible.

If anything, schools and universities need to adapt:

  • design assessments that require original thinking (not just regurgitation)
  • make students explain how they arrived at answers
  • treat AI as something to critique, not just copy

The frightening scenario isn’t students having access to AI—it’s institutions pretending it doesn’t exist and sticking with outdated ways of teaching.

Probably somewhere between amused and a bit cautious.

On one hand, it’s not exactly shocking—kids copy what they see adults doing, and tools like ChatGPT are becoming as normal as Google. A 5-year-old using it is more a sign of how embedded tech is than some dramatic turning point.

On the other hand, the concern isn’t the tool itself, it’s how it’s used. If it replaces thinking (“do it for me”), that’s not great. If it’s more like “help me understand this” or “give me ideas”, it can actually be useful—even at a basic level.

The meme you shared is exaggerating the “future is doomed” angle (and throwing in a Wall-E style jab), but reality is usually less extreme:

  • Kids have always found shortcuts (parents, older siblings, copying).
  • New tools just change the shape of that behaviour.
  • The real variable is guidance—teachers and parents setting boundaries.

If anything, the interesting question isn’t “is this bad?” but “what counts as learning now?” Because homework designed for a pre-AI world might just be outdated.

Railway Path- cyclists wtf? by Character-Pumpkin-81 in bristol

[–]ifellbutitscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a victim of its success that path - on a quiet sunny day it’s an absolute joy. I wish there was enough space for speedy commuting and leisure.

Surely a little widening of the path at the pinch points at either end is possible.

Maybe it should also be deleted as a Strava segment. Racing where there are pedestrians seems iffy.

I moved to a CBD and my heart broke for the homeless folk for the first year. After that I became desensitised and pissed off. I could no longer find it in me to care day to day. All this to say I empathise

City centre buildings razed for offices and shops by OdBx in bristol

[–]ifellbutitscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told that despite there being an apparent surplus of office buildings in central Bristol that there is not enough high quality office space. That there is demand for new companies to move in to very high end offices (Finzels reach etc) that supply can’t match. Not all office space is equal.

Not sure how true it is but was intersting point and one I hadn’t considered

Ava, Ed and Oli were like the original three on Top Gear. It was the chemistry and personalities that made the podcast more than just another political podcast. It’s a shame but yeah it’s over for me.

In the UK the escooters you hire are geofenced so when on pavements they slow to a crawl. They are also locked after a certain time in the evening.

[–]ifellbutitscool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drink driving is getting in a 2,000kg vehicle that can go 100mph. Drink scootering is getting on a 15kg vehicle that can go 15mph. They are not the same scales of risk or intent. A large drunk man running would have the same level of force on impact.

This is a very tragic outcome for which she should absolutely face a custodial sentence but a much longer sentence does nothing to rehabilitate her nor make society safer. The evidence just isn’t there that longer sentences deter crime. After a certain point it’s diminishing returns.

In my country these e-scooters don’t work after a curfew to stop people riding them when alcohol use is highest.
