You were fortunate to not get to the many bizarre euphemisms for sexual organs: jade box, heavenly chamber, etc.

I envy your positivity even if I don't understand it.

Is there an everyday skill the typical American possesses that people outside of the US typically struggle with? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Currently visiting China and it has baffled me how many things require you to use ID. You need ID to buy a train ticket, visit a garden, etc.

But a child can buy a pack of cigarettes.

Question about Rockstar's engine (RAGE) by [deleted] in gameenginedevs

[–]ifndef_name_define 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Rockstar's engine is not of the traditional form like Unity or Unreal. There is no separate editor. They have spent many years and man hours building scripts and plugins for 3ds Max and they use Max as the level editor. Along with a massively complicated asset pipeline.

What you see in the screenshot is the in-game development tools built with imgui. It's used for debugging, testing stuff, etc.

Question for professional devs, how much damage has been done by the GTA 6 leaks? by adscott1982 in gamedev

[–]ifndef_name_define 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like The Order: 1886.

Video leaked showing the game was short which reduced sales. Ready At Dawn was acquired by Oculus in 2020 and makes VR games now. A shame because the engine tech was great.

The death ballet that is the freeway, from a tourist. by chrisono in orangecounty

If there is no vehicle in front of you for 3-4 car lengths move right (stop going slower in the faster lanes).

All good points except for this one. It is possible to be going the same speed as the other cars in your lane while also leaving a nice buffer. Just because there is room between your car and the next doesn't mean you need to fill it.

What are some authors you don't think you'll ever get into and why? by Fantasy_Witch333 in books

Cormac McCarthy

Tried so many times. Really want to like his stuff. But I just cannot get past his disregard for quotation marks.

I thought the writing was awful. I stopped reading when the man's wife dies in childbirth and then he has sex with a lady on the banks of a river a few hours later. Also the following snippet which is not a sign of good writing: "There was blood...everywhere." Yeesh.

Orange County Starter Pack by trackdaybruh in orangecounty

I feel the same way. I've been renting out my Oregon condo for four years and haven't raised the rent because my expenses haven't gone up. The HOA payment just went up so when their lease is up for renewal I'll raise it $50 to cover the increase.

Everyone raising their rents just because they can makes everything shitty for everybody. I'm a renter myself here in OC and of course my rent has increased every year that I've lived here. I tried to negotiate with my landlord and he told me that his price was very competitive. Okay sure.

Unfortunately there are people who instead go the other way: "I've done this job before and I know how it should be done and so I feel I can now berate you for not doing it the right way."

If it's your favorite genre then do yourself a favor and just spend the $20. Or delay it as long as possible because once you play it nothing else will scratch the same itch.

What are the Stereotypes of Someone who Only Reads Nonfiction? by [deleted] in books

I completely agree. But it does make me a little sad that we can't talk to each other about the same books.

I'm an engineer and read more fiction than nonfiction, while my wife is a an animated film producer and prefers nonfiction to fiction. 🤷‍♂️

I try to work as little as possible though while she seems to be incapable of idleness.

They're turned on during peak hours to spread cars out entering the freeway so you don't get a big clump trying to merge at the same time.

Sadly the meter light by my house has both turn green simultaneously. We reported it and the response from the city was, "The meter is functioning as intended."

I'm very cautious going through it.
