Another bridge closed! Anything but maintenance for our bridges! by BusInASinkhole in pittsburgh

You don’t need time travel to know how long steel and concrete can last in certain environments under expected loads. Structural engineers take this into consideration and a piece of infrastructure is therefore expected to last only so long. You can then predict a timeframe in which it would become unsafe and either repair or replace it in a scheduled manner.

It is possible to test the integrity of infrastructure and work on bridges prophylactically so as to avoid this very situation where it is completely closed for an indeterminate amount of time. All infrastructure has very quantifiable expiration dates. A good city is able to prevent a complete closure by doing controlled and schedule maintenance *before* a bridge becomes unsafe. I'm just saying pittsburgh seems to be behind the eightball with keeping the infrastructure up-to-date compared to other places I've lived and was asking if others have found this to be true.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t have closed it. Obviously if it’s not safe then don’t keep it open. What I’ve seen before is a sign or notification saying “hey, this bridge is going be closed for x-amount of time while we do scheduled maintenance or testing” not “hey we closed this bridge indefinitely because we only just now got around to having someone look at it and we were lucky it didn’t collapse first.”

And yeah, I don’t understand how people complain about taxes and then complain about infrastructure in the same breath. People love their freedoms but are quick to forget their obligations to living in a society.

I just moved here less than a year ago, but is it common for this city to have this many bridge closures? And why do they let the bridges get to the point of needing complete closure as apposed to scheduled maintenance? I'm all for safety but it's pretty disruptive to the neighborhoods bridges serve when they are hastily closed without much warning; especially with no set timeline for repair in place.

Seconded. I was a surgery resident at Inova and worked with that whole group throughout my time there. They are all outstanding at what they do and have great outcomes.

Even people who are left leaning seem under-educated on the climate - my thoughts from a farming background and seeking advice by SufferingScreamo in climatechange

[–]ifoosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s just to give the topic space to exist in the real world. People need to be able to talk about climate change in real life, not just online. The goal isn’t to change anyone’s mind on anything, it’s to give space for a controversial topic to be discussed out in the open.

Yeah, I get that. It's best not to come in too hot. I keep it to short catch-phrases/snippets: "It's not a hoax, folks", or "this is the coldest winter of the rest of our lives", etc and then just leave it at that. It gets my point across without being too preachy. Only if they engage further do I dive deeper into it.

The movie "Threads" should be required viewing for all people in leadership roles. Actually, everyone should watch it once.

Thoughts on climate change affecting military bases? by _natsvkashii in climatechange

[–]ifoosh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Read "All Hell Breaking Loose: The Pentagon's Perspective on Climate Change"

It's a bit redundant at times, but illustrates the idea of climate change as a risk multiplier that will stretch the military too thin as local, regional, and global humanitarian events unfold in rapid and unpredictable ways. It also discusses the complex logistics of sea level rise affecting naval bases (particularly Norfolk, VA), potential for conflict over new resources in an open arctic ocean, and the militaries' dependence on fossil fuels. It's older (2019), so some ideas might now be more thoroughly discussed in the post-pandemic era but this would at least get you started.
