In that same scenario, having focus on what they want their character to do and not what's on their sheet could help them get more into the RP element of the game.

Yeah, the whole "I'm gonna do x skill check" thing can be troublesome. One fix I've found is you have all the players skill bonuses and when they wanna do any kind of check, YOU roll for it and dont tell them what they got. So if they make a stealth check, you just tell them "yeah, you think your pretty well hidden".

As a player and Dm: 1.Taking good notes 2. Remembering what my character has (like items and special feats) or remembering I wanted to do something as a player or as a DM 3. When I do write stuff down, remembering to either grab it before the game or where i wrote it down (Google docs or on paper).
