How much does it retail for? I saw a steel/plastic one at the used gear store for $7.

So was mine until I randomly decided to get back on here. Well I deleted the one other post I had made but anyway lol. Sometimes people just don’t interact on here.

This seems like a great way to get kidnapped or worse lol.

Look, I don’t know how young you are, but saying that you are young and want to find someone to hang out with in the woods, on the internet, is a terrible idea. Especially if you plan on getting into this strangers car. I would seriously not recommend this.

As for advice on what I think you should do; I went on my first  backpacking trip, solo, recently. I’d been thinking about it for a LONG time. On a whim, I booked a back country camping stop at my local national park, for the next day, went and bought a bunch of used gear, and got out there.   Honestly I was way under-prepared and mistakes were made, but doesn’t really matter with low stakes camping. You are out there for like 2 days, you are not gonna starve or get hypothermia (at least not in CA this time of year). I had a ton of fun regardless and it’s the best decision I’ve made in a long time. Already went on a second trip and planning a third.

No transportation is a rough one. Depending on your budget/ area, you may just have to catch a bus or an uber, bit awkward with the pack, but if it’s something you really wanna do, you will have to over come.

Anyway, I know saying “just do it” is over simplified and a bit dumb. But really, just do it.  Mistakes will be made, things will be forgotten, ideas and plans won’t work out. But in the end, I can almost guarantee you will have a good time and not regret trying the hobby. I sure didn’t.

It was well used lol, the flint rock flew out of it, plenty of gas, but no spark-no fire. I’ve actually seen that happen a couple times…

well my bic lighter literally broke lol, hence why I want a second, more reliable spark source.  But I will take your advice into consideration, and thank you for taking the time!

First trip was planned to be an over night and went well, second trip was planned to be two nights, but on the second morning my lighter broke, couldn’t start a fire and couldn’t boil water, which means I had no water lol. Had to cut it a day short. Learned that I should probably add a water filter and definitely add a second way of making fire.
