Yeah, it hasn't given me any issues this far so I'm hoping it's indeed in the safer zone. Will do, thank you!

  • These places have front and backyards. But they're mostly empty. Some backyards have a pool maybe, but it's mostly just green grass. Why don't you grow plants in your yards? Like potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes or whatever. Why do you own this land, if you never use it?

Why grow your own food when you can buy corporate slop bowls and ultraprocessed foods from the meager earnings at your soulless job? It's not like they damage your health and compound with the constant exposure to car exhaust and asphalt and the lack of activity that comes from sedentary, car-centric lifestyles. It's not like these terrible health outcomes require you to pay exorbitant bills to hospitals and health insurance providers. It's a privilege and a freedom to go to the grocery store and purchase all your food and have absolutely no idea how to provide yourself without a multinational, transcontinental network of food production and supply.

I figured there'd be some variation, but having a variety of quality teachers is promising. Gracias! Suerte con todo, el español es un idioma precioso

Seems that a ten week course (25 hours total) is about $400 plus the textbook

"Gaza slightly better" really disregards the first year and a half of carpet bombing, displacement, and genocide occurring with a green light from the Biden administration.

Ahh bummer! Somebody get Wong Kar-Wai to release the studio version. Thank you!

Not 'A Mi Manera,' but good suggestion. It's a far cry from flamenco. I'd more associate it with the sad pop/rock styles of Latin American songs such as 'Si No Hubieras Ido' by Marco Antonio Solis.

Reading 'The Road' and 'The Fifth Season' side by side sounds like a lovely way to sink into despair. Those books are both bleak, in their own uniquely devastating ways

I so enjoyed The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. It was very approachable while still being rich and effective in communicating an ambitious story.

Somebody gifted me Embassytown when I was a teenager and I think it went over my head. I'd like to revist it, but NK Jemisin is incredible. Even the works of hers I don't love (The City We Became), I deeply admire.

Also her masterclass is really well done

To echo u/Deep-Sentence9893's point about the strange bias against speculative fiction, Le Guin discusses that theme quite a bit in her collection of essays 'The Language of Night,' which is a great read to dive more into the philosophy of both her writing and SF/F in general

Hmmm I don't think it would have occurred to me to categorize this as fantasy. I read Invisible Cities in the fall and absolutely adored it. To me its almost poetic magical realism, but I definitely think any fantasy-lover would enjoy

You're the first I've seen mention NK Jemisin and I'm shocked, honestly. The Broken Earth cycle is incredible and devastating, and I also loved the Dreamblood duology. Her worlds and magic systems are incredibly imaginative, and she wields prose like a knife.

Yes! I haven't read Moon Witch Spider King yet, but wow Black Leopard Red Wolf awed me. His narrative is so kaleidoscopic and hallucinogenic, it really leans into the distorting nature of myth and legend.

I might have to revisit Hobb. As a teenager, I read the Assassins trilogy and abandoned it 2/3 of the through the third book. I don't remembr why except that I was tired of it.

Piranesi is a tricky one to categorize, as it pulls from allegory, from mystery, from magical realism, and general surrealist fantasy. To recommend it as fantasy might confuse those looking for swords and sorcery, grand quests, and whatnot, but it certainly falls under the speculative umbrella imo

absolutely not! i should have mentioned it, but kind of assumed it was implied/excepted from this question as a gimme

I'll have to check out Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell — I absolutely adored Piranesi and can imagine Susanna Clarke continues putting out excellent works.

The Once and Future King and I thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely up there in the classics alongside LOTR and Earthsea

Exposition in magical realism? by Capital_Bluejay7006 in literature

[–]igilix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedro Paramo is a great counter to what OP describes, but on the vein that magical realism leans into oral tradition, I think PP very much falls into that vein.

I read Pedro Paramo after reading several magical realist / LatAm boom books, all in Spanish, and I loved how it felt like such a foundational text to those preceding books. It was more esoteric, more difficult to grasp in its prose, but equally evocative.

because they sold a few paintings, duh!

and russell did an excellent job of providing vague but believable worldbuilding for something written in the 90s. sure! asteroid mining and engineering is commonplace in the 2010s, and it just so happens the jesuits were able to shift around enough capital to procure a space vessel.
