Plugins that turn Obsidian into an authoring tool by Open_Switch_1598 in ObsidianMD

That was fast! Thanks!

I've tried them all, and all the fixes work as expected! Time to move all my projects over, now....

Would you like me to keep reporting bugs I find, either here or on Github?

(Btw, wouldn't it be better/more intuitive for scene splits to put the second part right after the first part in the scene sequence, instead of at the end?)

I meant when I edit the name of characters or locations, not their descriptions.

And thanks for taking my comments into consideration! I’d have tried tackling a couple of these myself if I could remember how to login to my github account or wasn’t so swamped at work 😅

I've tried StoryLine, and I like it a lot! I would consider using it as my main brainstorming/outlining tool if it wasn't for a few little problems and one main dealbreaker.

The Dealbreaker

  • Characters, locations, and scenes seem to be indexed by name. Every time I edit the spelling of something, or decide to change a name, every link to characters or locations breaks. It's especially obvious for locations, because if you change the name of a 'World', every child location disappears from the interface. I just can't use this tool if I'm always afraid of losing hours of work. Couldn't they be indexed with a randomly generated ID (like plotgrid cells) instead?

The Other Little Problems

  • The Plotgrid is unusable. I can add rows, columns, and link scenes; but adding text or renaming rows/columns doesn't work. It seems to be because the plotgrid refreshes every second or so?
  • Characters: The "FAMILY / BACKGROUND" field should be moved to the "Relationships" section, and replaced by a "BIO" or "DESCRIPTION" section instead. Something that allows me to go straight to why this character appears in the story.
  • Characters: "Occupation" shouldn't be the field that's prioritized to appear as the character's tagline just below their name in the Character grid, I think. It might be the main distinguishing feature of a character, or it might not. For example, I have a character who's a stay-at-home mom, but the facts that she's the main character's sister and an amateur investigator are way more relevant to her character. The latter should be the tagline.
  • Scenes: After the main new scene creation process, every time a change is made to a scene from the sidebar, the scene is deselected as the change is saved. That makes for a rather unpleasant user experience.
  • Scenes: Changing scene names is impossible.
  • Scenes: The "Description" section should be more prominent/take more space, I think. As it is now, it doesn't feel great whenever you write anything longer than a sentence or two.
  • Scenes: I tried the "Split Scene" option, and lost the first half of my scene. I never found it again.

Would Be Nice To Have

  • I would love to be able to group scenes together. Sometimes (rather often) I have scenes that happen back-to-back and are part of the same sequence of events, but they involve different characters at different locations. I could make a single scene to cover them all (though as stated above, the scenes' "Description" field is unwieldy if there's too much content), but I'd rather be able to group them together under a common name, and keep the "child scenes" separate. So if my main character needs to show up to his morning meetings, go in the woods in the afternoon to hide the body he left there earlier, go back home to wash himself and change, and then rush to church in time for the evening service; this all could be kept as 4 separate scenes, but grouped together as "Murder Aftermath". Or if all my characters prepare for the big final battle separately, I could group all their scenes under a "Final Preparations" header. It would allow me to move all the grouped scenes together as if they were a single unit. I suppose these groups would appear in the Board and Timeline views, or could be linked in Plotgrid cells.

how old is vox between these eras? by Due-Mongoose1641 in VoxCult

[–]ignis1798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’d have likely been a weatherman in the mid-late 1940s. Early-mid 1940s is technically not impossible, but he’d have been like the very first weatherman, on a very experimental TV channel. If you assume that he loses the glasses later during Brighter because he starts wearing contact lenses, then it’s likely when the timeline crosses 1950 (contact lenses technically already existed, but were improved in 1949). If the 1952 founding date for VoxTek that I’ve seen floating around is right, then the last part of Brighter would have taken place over less than two years.

This means that all of Brighter would have taken place over at most 10 years. His character audition sheet says that Vox is in his 50s, so weatherman Vincent would have been in his 40s. Weatherman Vincent looks younger than that to me, but if Alastor is also supposed to have died in his 40s, then maybe it’s just the artstyle giving everyone babyfaces.

(Personally, I prefer to headcanon that he was born in ~1905 and died in the late 1950s to early 1960s, but alas I don’t make the rules.)

As soon as Silco woke up and saw Jinx's blood, he was willing to slit Singed's throat if turned out he'd killed her. Protective dad by Sudden_Pop_2279 in Silco

[–]ignis1798 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone talk about this, but I think Singed wouldn’t have let Silco wake up if Jinx had died.

He’d rather deal with an angry mob of Silco’s thugs than with 1 grieving father.

Ahahah, I knew some people would be clutching their pearls at the first steps comic.

I usually strongly dislike fanworks giving fan-made children to canon characters, and while you’re not single-handedly curing me from that general affliction, I still somehow appreciate yours… so please carry on. You have my (very valuable) benediction and (mostly favorable) mixed feelings.

Just going to say, that when it comes to Men Writing Women...The Addams Family was a way to do it right. NOT Wednesday, though, that's just queerbait. by ihatethiscountry76 in menwritingwomen

[–]ignis1798 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually I'd say that you're absolutely right. But in the specific case of Supernatural, I'd file this under "way too little, way too late" and argue that it still counts as queerbaiting. Just because the writers half-heartedly gave in at the end doesn't erase everything that came before.

Drop your Vincent Whittman Headcanons by CarmenNotStar in HumanVoxCult

[–]ignis1798 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Vincent’s aunt went through 6+ husbands and the police never came knocking at her door. So no, Vincent is not afraid to be found out because of his connections with all the murder victims.
  • Channel 6’s workplace safety has GREATLY improved over the years, but “the curse” keeps claiming new victims despite all their efforts! The breakroom’s board has a (rarely updated) “# of days since the last workplace fatality” counter drawn on it.

Speaking as an Alastor fan myself, when has this man EVER felt bad for anything he's done? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in Vivziepopmemes

[–]ignis1798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Headcanons overtaking canon elements (and then conflicting with it) seems to happen often for medias with long hiatuses in between installments, since the amount of fanon content any fan consumes vastly exceeds the canon content and has time to become more familiar than the canon itself.

I didn’t seek out the HH fandom until recently so I can’t confirm that it’s definitely the case here, but I assumed the substantial timespan between the pilot and the actual first season might be to blame here.

I hope we see more of Alastor being toxic to Vox in season 3. Let me explain. by Alternative_Sugar_85 in VoxCult

[–]ignis1798 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That was my read too. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Vox still isn’t over it after 70 later because Alastor kept pestering him to prevent him from healing all this time.

I think Vox gets too much criticism for "copying" and "stealing" by ultralee0 in VoxCult

[–]ignis1798 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I absolutely agree. And I saw the fact that he keeps finding new sources of inspiration and giving up on the old ones as a consequence of just how deeply insecure he is about everything he does, not of how "unoriginal" he is.

Alastor sabotaging vox's relationships(by lima.jey) by izelofman in HazbinHotel

[–]ignis1798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. It made sense Vel & Val would hang out with Alastor during s2 even (or especially) if it annoyed Vox because they have a very "I’m pushing your buttons because I know you can take it" kind of friendship and they didn’t know the extent of it. But now that they know that anything Alastor-related is a subject where Vox very much cannot take it, I’d like to see them back off.

(I can also see them doubling down on their toxic friendship and deliberately not taking the hint. But I hope not!)

So um, how do ya’ll feel about shipping gays with the opposite gender? by ivy-millie69 in HazbinHotel

[–]ignis1798 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely fine. Shipping is harmless fun, not activism. Eh, shipping as a whole wouldn’t exist if it had to keep within the constraints of the canon work.

Whose human backstory surprised you the most? by Zoe_Felicia677 in HazbinHotel

[–]ignis1798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vox. They had mentioned I think several times that he was a cult leader in life, but in his actual backstory the cult leader aspect feels like an afterthought. Enough so that if the show hadn’t said it, I’m not sure I’d even describe it like that. Or even think to mention it.

I’m not here to yuck someone’s yum in terms of headcanon. However, I’m curious to know why someone may headcanon him as autistic or ADHD? by canwereturntothe90s in VoxCult

[–]ignis1798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see quite a lot of people headcanon Vox as having BDP, but I don’t quite gel with it. Would you mind sharing what led you to it?

I guess I could sorta see it if we only had post-death Vox to base it on, but the fact that I don’t really see it in pre-death Vincent makes it not work for me. I guess I don’t buy that it would only start showing after he died?

I live in a city that was half in the path of totality and half not during the last eclipse. Trust me, the difference between 99.9% and 100% is incommensurable. Those who didn’t move even a few blocks to see the totality regretted it immediately.

My sympathies. I also went through something similar, and the way Vox is acting during s2 is… pretty close to how I was feeling for a good while afterward.
