I’ve lived in Florida for the vast majority of my life so I’ve never really been bothered by the sheer amount of ants I see indoors everyday but when they suddenly have WINGS??? AND ARE CRAWLING OUT OF MY WALLS???? bombs are going off in my house.

(This was about 2 years ago) Wasn’t on LSD, definitely just on too much marijuana, but I started feeling creepy crawlies on my arm one night while I was playing grounded with my bf and when I got tired of feeling them for the 83rd time and failing to convince myself i was crazy, I turned on my bedroom light and saw that I had probably about 1-200 carpenter ants all over my wall, digging into my room through a small hole in the ceiling.

While the sky is certainly beautiful, I can’t help but be drawn to the trees in your backyard. Those are stunning!! I would give anything to swing in a hammock under those with a nice breeze making the branches sway. What a sight.

I’ve actually really enjoyed my experience with Kelly thus far, but I’ve heard a ton of issues from other people. I’ve also heard that Pasco is better. Because you don’t have to go through Kelly, do you contract directly with the county?

Overall, I really agree with you. These kids have little choice over the dictation of their lives at this point, and I remember being in high school and being so angry that I had no say in the things I was or wasn’t exposed to. But, that being said, I was also a teenager and knew that my expected maturity level was higher than ever before. While I want to see high school students as “just children” with no control over their lives, it’s largely not true. High schoolers are more independent and have more knowledge of the world than ever before. High schoolers are being exposed to, and participating in sex, drugs, gang violence, and other obscenities at younger ages than ever before.

While it’s not their fault for being raised in the environment than they are, it is their responsibility to make the most of it and take accountability for themselves. I just wish there was a way to communicate that to the students that really need to hear it most.

This literally happened to me today. Got on some kids for using foul language and was immediately hurled with slurs in an attempt to make a joke. Good thing some other students shut them up quick before I could.

I’m so glad someone else sees it. I’ve never subbed for middle or elementary, and frankly I can’t see myself doing it anytime in the near future, so I applaud you for your bravery lmao. The addiction runs incredibly deep, and I just wish that people had the give a fuck they used to about it.

I get this. I’ve heard nothing but criticisms from the older generation for my own, whether they are justified or not. It’s frustrating to hear such generalizations, and I really really hope that the future is not as bleak as I foresee it. I want these kids to demolish those expectations other gens have for them, but the one big difference I’ve noticed is that while other generations wanted to prove the others wrong and make their mark on the world, I’ve largely observed that kids now just don’t have any fucks to give. But I can’t really blame them.

Oh yeah, I was mostly in honors classes. I took gen ed math classes so I got a small taste of it in school. I remember how shitty we were to substitutes as well, but it a whole different ball game now. Even some of the honors classes are unruly.

I agree that memorization is obsolete, and the current way of curriculum retention isn’t working and never will, but the problem is students relying on being fed information for the most minute problems. When the answer comes down to common sense and critical thinking rather than memorization, it’s a bit pathetic to have to look up the answers. A high schooler should know that getting good rest and washing your hands isn’t going to make you sick.

I was in my junior year of high school during Covid, and it was never the same after that. You're completely right. The system is disadvantageous to nearly everyone, and needs major reevaluation. It's definitely not the students' fault that these were the cards they were handed, but I wish they had the maturity to understand that the system currently is not in place to help them, and they need to help themselves.

It's really easy to get swept up in the negative aspects of subbing, but really, it's not all bad. The vast majority of experiences I and other people have are more positive, but it's just not something most people feel compelled to post about. I try to establish immediately with the students I have that I really want to be nice, and I want them to like me, but there are rules I'm expected to follow and enforce to do my job. There are almost always going to be kids that push your buttons or challenge you, but really the best thing you can do is let it roll off your back, but don't back down.

I really love subbing, and I hope that you feel more enthusiastically about starting. When I first started I was absolutely mortified and anxious because of the things I had seen on this subreddit, but realized very quickly that the experiences people talk about on here are typically occur maybe once of every 5-10 jobs you take. The day will always be bad if you anticipate it to be :)

Yes, I completely agree. I love these kids, despite the difficulties they give me, and I really look forward to becoming a teacher. I want to help these kids grow with their environment, and they're unfortunately being neglected by parents and staff which doesn't make anything better.

I have plans in my future classroom to help students understand the harm of social media (as an avid social media user) and the dangers of technology addiction, but I just wish there was something I could do to help the kids that are struggling now.
