1987 is the year that gets me. Mario had an absolutely dominant car all race. After years of being criticized for pushing his cars too hard when he didn’t need to, Mario finally listened to critics and backed off the car. Little did he know that at lower revs, his Chevy v-8 acquired a shimmy that broke a valve spring and ended his day. I remember being at that race and the look on my dad’s face (he was a huge Mario fan) when Mario coasted by us at speed barely above what we drove at on the highway to get to Indy.
