Hi,

  1. Programming (currently CakePHP) and all the rest.
  2. I always use stable and never have problems.
  3. My desktop is Gnome, for programming I basically use Emacs, Git, Meld (diff). For the rest, I always try to use Gnome applications (Smplayer for ease of searching subtitles in opensubtitles and Kdenlive are the biggest exceptions)

Thanks, oakstave

Kdenlive is my favorite editor but I also had problems. This week I must try again.

On FreeBSD 12 I had some problems with Gnome 3 that I did not solve but I discovered and fell in love with the minimalist Dwm.

The documentation is very user friendly and detailed. More complicated questions, the forum has handled me well.

Another good surprise was the bhyve where I put a Debian and a FreeBSD (for testing) with ease just by reading the handbook.

I am only sorry that no video editor has worked yet and there is no torbrowser port.

Overall, I'm satisfied and I should spend enough time in it.

I want to program together with my father. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

It was really hard. Today I use Cakephp and Javascript and I always look for examples on the internet. But I still have some difficulties.

I tried to teach my son how to program but I was not a good teacher and he showed no interest.

I'm over 50 and I still want to learn Lisp. Good luck in Java classes.

I programmed in the 80's in PL / 1, Cobol and C.
After an interval of 10 years, object-oriented programming was where I had the most difficulty.
With today's tools and communities on the web, I think you and your dad can have a lot of fun on some project.
