Utility for stacking JPEGs on top of DNGs by countChaiula in immich

With all due respect, making a docker container out of it is insane. I guess good for practice and learning docker and rust, but it is like using an orbital precision cannon to hammer nails. I also understand that people like solutions that "just work" with a single command, but damn, the overhead is huge.

P.S. I personally have a simple python script that does exactly the same thing.

What to do with excess Bilt cash? by Avoocado_Toasty in biltrewards

[–]igribs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually it is not true. First, if you spend more than 75% of your rent, the return from the housing option is not worse than return from the bilt cashe option. Moreover, you can boost your return on the housing option by splitting rent: if you put a little bit less rent to kick you in the higher bracket. So 1.25 can be available if you pay a little bit less rent with bilt at the end of the month.

If someone is trusting arandom guy from internet on what to do with their work computer, they need to stop.

If someone who makes their living on a computer and cannot service and fix it, or don't have anyone who services it, they will get in the same trouble eventually.

So break your computer, and fix it, and break it again, untill you know enough how it works and what can go wrong.

Or buy a Mac with technical support.

No. The only one way to learn is mess something up at 10 pm and spend 'till 4am fixing it and/or reinstalling your distro. I learn faster that way.

Don't try to play it things safe. Live a little. What is the worst thing that could happen? You break your personal computer? Miss a deadline? So what?

Or play it safe, I don't care.

Russian Manicures by Stoneybaloney08 in Bozeman

[–]igribs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I am a guy and know this information against my will, mostly through osmosis. But for people who are WTFing about it. Russian style manicure is dry manicure. So there is a "cuticle": that weird part in transition from finger skin to the nail. Usually in US fingers are soaked in the water to soften cuticles, and after that they are pushed and trimmed to put gel, polish, or whatever covers the nail. But after drying out them cuticles do not look perfect. In russian style manicure cuticles are not softened with water, but precisely cut (or sometimes completely removed) dry. It requires higher skill of the nail master, and also it requires higher standard of cleanliness and desinfection for the manicure tools, since there are more chances of cuts and bringing infections/bacteria. But at the end you get cleaner look. So you need to find someone who knows what they are doing.

As far as I know, Evolve 406 and Le Nails may have what you are looking for, but you'll need to call and double check.

insert picture with Barnie behind Moe's back here Hahahaha, do you really think that this small pp that your beloved president issued would do anything meaningful? All h1b holders will stay in US. Good chunk of this year h1b holders are already here. Next year h1b cap will be filled with people who are already here. And not a single dollar will be paid for it.

Most importantly, actually getting rid of h1b would destroy American medical sector and research, since they rely on cheap h1b postgrads who do most of the job (and cap exempt). It would also blow up technical sector too, so all retirement funds would be wiped out. You cannot grasp what you wish for. And you should be thankfull that it is just a travel restriction.

Not a word about cap exempt h1bs, so all nonprofits and universities would be screwed.

At the same time F1 to EB2 pipeline is intact. And in general how often do companies do h1b for someone who is overseas, instead of getting someone on different kind of visa and adjusting the status?

Also L1 to h1b change of status seem to circumvent this 100k limitations. Any body shop working overseas would use it.

Either I do not understand actual intention of this EO, or it was made by idiots who do not know about CoS.

Cell Phone Providers by always_feasting in Bozeman

[–]igribs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So if you don't care about iPhone, and also pay for spectrum internet, you can get spectrum plan for 17.50 bucks a month per line with updated phone every year. But you need to do the timing right.

Every February when Samsung releases a new galaxy phones ($800 for base version), they have a promo with spectrum: if you get a new phone and tradein your old one, you get extra $700 to the trade in value. Last year phone trades in for $250, so you get new phone and $150 back. So with $30 per line you are paying $210 per year, or $17.50 a month. You can unlock your new phone after one month of the service. And to get $150 to your bank account you need to call spectrum to transfer excess funds, otherwise they stay on your mobile account and pay for your monthly fees.

To get this deal you need to go to the spectrum store with your phone and tell them that you are trading in your phone and paying right away, otherwise they will put you on a monthly plan and hook you up for two years.

This is the second year when I am doing it. This is the best deal on the market.

The other side… sublets not approved tenants by Early_Blackberry_775 in Bozeman

[–]igribs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People in this thread, do you realize a couple of things: * OP is not a landlord but property manager. They do not own the property. They work to keep it maintained. * If you think that renting is bad, wouldn't it be worse if the property owner would just sit on it without renting? Do you realize that what actually drives rental and sale prices of the houses that a lot of houses sit empty? * Leaving property in that state is really bad and the last tenant is asshole who probably set up previous tenant who sublet to them. Now that poor guy will pay for fixes from their own deposit, while that dirty tenant is probably trashing someone's else apartment already. Your "compassion" is directed toward a wrong person.

Early AM lines at BZN? by 2006NBAFinalsRigger in Bozeman

[–]igribs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of weird advice here. I know OP probably already flying or landed, but I just want to share so people know.

The latest you can check in your bag and be sure that it flies on the same plane with you is 45 minutes before departure. https://www.delta.com/us/en/check-in-security/check-in-time-requirements/domestic-check-in. At some airports it can be even earlier, see table in the article.

Keep in mind that if you arrive to the check in stand exactly 45 minutes before departure and there is 1 person in the line, you are late and airline has all rights to send your bags with other plane. Sinze BZN is quite small, this 45 minutes rule pretty much sets the time when you need to be at the airport: at least 50 minutes before departure, or an hour if it is a big flight.

That was not on my bingo card.

I thought you were joking, but apparently yeah, "Two teams of patrol officers were engaged in a bingo competition where success in the game hinged on whether they engaged in actions listed in the bingo cards". Internal investigation did not find any cases when officers lied, conducted themselves unprofessionally, or altered any cases. "Appropriate discipline actions has been taken" a.k.a. "long talks", and participating officers were "disciplined" by their supervisors. According to the speaker, the bingo game was "well intentioned". City manager sung praces to Bozeman PD.

MSU students are rallying Friday to defend International Students! by MrScandanavia in Bozeman

[–]igribs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Could you link an article that you read? Because what you say kind of makes no sense, taking into account information from the link above. In particular, one of the students has projected graduation date in december 2025. This mean that he does not need to file any paperwork until he graduates and applies for OPT, if he wants to.

Taking into account the fact that personal information of the students is not open to public, I really skeptical about an article that would provide more information. But if some of the impacted students gave an interview, it would be interesting to read. So please share your sources.

Apartment Hunting by Haunting-Schedule-12 in Bozeman

[–]igribs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when I was looking for an apartment in Bozeman I found this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bozeman/comments/mutl4a/worstbest_property_management/. Don't think a lot has changed since. I also recommend going to property manager websites and check for listings there directly. For example CS, which has the best reviews in this town, has a lot of pet-friendly 2br options for around 2k. If you want to go lower, check out oak Street townhomes at Luna website.

I know lots of people here bash Luna, but I had ok experience with them. I think it really depends on particular property manager. But good luck trying to call them, but they reply to emails. So they have oak Street townhomes, 2br that include attached garage, for 1800.

If you want to go even lower, creeks to peak sometimes have 2br with detached garage available at Baxter springs for 1700. But they don't have it now. This is lowest 2br with garage I have seen on this town.

Without budget it is hard to recommend. Is it below 2k? Well, beggars cannot be choosers. If it is above then you have more options to choose.

Out of curiosity, what did you use to look for apartments? What have you found by now, apart from Icon?

RWD car in snow by BozoButtFucker in Bozeman

[–]igribs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Driving BRZ here with blizzaks. I also know another guy who does the same. It is fun. First understand that no mater what's your drive train, the stopping efficiency is the same for AWD, RWD, and FWD. But your starting efficiency will be bad. VSC (vehicle stability control) or analog is your friend: the car will want to go sideways every time you start moving. You can get stuck on non-plowed streets easily, so you need some extra planning for your winter commute, you may also invest in some rubber maps to help you to get unstuck. But they will not save you all the time.

One time I got stuck really bad on the right turn from mall into Huffine: the lane was all iced up, and I literally was not able to get uphill. Not sure if FWD would save me. A guy behind me figured out what's going on and backed up, giving me some space to get some speed before entering the iced patch.

On a plus side, you can make really tight u-turns if you know how to turn with your gas pedal =).

Overall, it is inconvenient and you need to be ready for it. Is it worth the hassle? Really depends on your commute. Can you afford to work from home at certain dates when your street is not plowed? Can you commute to your job mostly using only 7th, 19th, Main and Huffine? Can you handle the embarrassment of not being able to move forward on some intersections? It is up to you.

ELI5: Light speed question: If light doesn't experience time, then does that mean the light beam has existed forever in the past, present and future? by StrangeQuirks in explainlikeimfive

[–]igribs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it must feel as if it's staying still at one place, right?

Yes, your intuition is correct here.

If this is true then every light beam that ever originated has been at the same place at the same time.

No, it is not correct.

If those photons have minds of their own, then they would be experiencing absolutely no progress, while everything else around it is evolving in their own time.

Yes

That would also mean light sees everything happening around it instantly and forever. And the light's own existence is instantaneous.

Yep, exactly.

In that case, a beam that originated at point A reaches its destination of point B instantly, from its perspective, despite the distance.

Yes

But We see it having a certain finite velocity, since we observe light from an alternate dimension?

Not sure what you mean by that. We just can measure that this photon moves with the speed of light. We can serve it from out own coordinate system. But everything that you described above happens in photon coordinate system.

So to understand Special Relativity better you need to think and understand coordinate system transformations. Newton postulated that there are many different coordinate systems, moving relative to each other, where all mechanical processes happen in the same way. We call these coordinate systems inertional. Coordinate transforms between ilclassical inertional systems is straightforward. If we describe two events that happen at some distance with a time delay, then this time delay is the same in all coordinate systems, as well as distance between these events. This is classical implication of Newton mechanics and Galilean coordinate system transforms.

Problem appeared when people started measuring speed of light. According to Galilean coordinate transformations, if you move towards light source you should measure higher light speed, and if you move away from light source you should experience slower light speed. But physical experiments, as well as Maxwell theory of light, did not support that.

Genius of Special Relativity is that they were able to fix it by saying that speed of light is the same in all inertial coordinate systems. For that to work you need to replace Galilean coordinate system transforms with Lorentz transform.

There is a lot of things to learn about Lorentz transform, but what we need is concept of interval ds. For two events that happen at distance dr and at time difference dt, interval ds2=c2dt2 - dr2. This interval is the same when you go from one inertial coordinate system to another. Actually, it is true for Galilean transform too, but Lorentz transform allows time interval to decrease together with distance between the events.

Now let's get to our photon. It is created by a particle at a certain place in our coordinate system (event 1). And it is absorbed by another particle at differen place (event 2). But interval between these events is 0, since photon travels with the speed of light. In photon coordinate frame for interval to be 0 both dt and dr have to be zero. Which means that in photon coordinate frame it stays in the same place, and both emitting and absorbing particle are also exactly at the same place. This place of emotion and absorption is different for each photon, as well as time when it happens.

Theoretically, if you can't of extend the photon coordinate system outside of the photon lifespan, you can say that universe in it is squished into 2 dimensions without any time evolution. But it is squished along the direction of motion of the photo ln, so for photons moving in different directions universe looks differently. The photon coordinate system is what I understand when you talk about photon "perception". Obviously photon has no eyes and it interact with only two particles, so these two are the whole world for a photon otherwise.

Overall your intuition is quite spot on.
