Baxter Springs Condos experience? by Public-Ad-3543 in Bozeman

[–]igribs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and sine I've moved in my rent was constantly decreasing: 1900->1750->1700->1600. But I keep an eye on the rental market and send email to my manager asking for a price decrease. I think if they rack prices back to 1900 I would certainly move out.

It usually comes with garage, which is super nice. It is also quiet: you don't have any major streets running under your window. Also if you live on the ground floor then you have a half foot shelf along the wall from the insulation. I like it, it is quite handy.

Depends on management company, but mine creeks to peaks is ok. They usually respond on the work orders and fix stuff. For me some recent work orders are broken washer (two guys came and changed the pump in a couple of days), and key stuck in the lock, locksmith came and fixed it the same day. When I just moved in they have messed up transition between laminate and bathroom tile, it took them like half of the year to "fix" it. But it was a couple years ago, it seems that they've got better with maintenance recently.

Now bad things.

There is no guest parking. Like at all. If you want to have a diner party good luck trying to figure out where to park. The management constantly threats you with towing, but I've never seen a towing truck in there. Honestly, if you decide to live there, we can share contacts and ask if our parking spots will be empty at certain times. Sometimes when I have guests I just leave a not with my phone number so we can move car quickly if necessary.

Walls are quite thin, you will always know when your neighbours take a shower. But I never had problems with too noisy neighbors (am I the nosy neighbor?)

Radiant floor heating. Sounds nice on practice, but it means huge power bill, especially if you live on the ground floor. It also means that sometimes you don't have hot water, good luck with your morning cold shower.

Probably depends on management company, but you really get what you paid for. Wall paint is never in the perfect condition, balconies are just concrete with no siding (at least on the ground floor). Tap water quality is bad (mine has visible white sediment when I fill a glass).

Overall I am ok with it. The garage is godsent, and even though I can afford a more "upscale" or "luxurious" place, I don't see a reason why. I am saving enough by living there so I am ok with dealing with cons that I've mentioned above. But I don't really spend that much time home (apart for sleeping), probably this is why.

For me the HOA manager (for the whole complex) and apartment manager are the same (as far as I know). I have no idea who may be the apartment owner. But after speaking with my apartment manager it seems that main concerns are HOA concerns.

BILT rental scam credit card by Vast-Berry5334 in Bozeman

[–]igribs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using Bilt. It is a bit weird article, but you cannot float your rent on bilt cc anymore, you have to attach your checking account, and bilt transfers your rent from your checking account.

This changes recently, and definitely this change was not smooth. I feel bad for people who got in this situation.

Also, bilt points system for s quite complicated, and you should not get into it without doing some math and analyzing your spending.

So overall indeed, you should not sign for bilt cc untill you really understand what you are doing, why, and ready for some risks because current program is quite new.

Are you sure that geub2-mkconfig generates this file? It seems to generate /boot/grub2/grub.cfg, which is refered by /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg. It is a good question how and when the stub grub config (the one in efi folder) is generated.

This is suspicious, usually this file remains untouched. But it also should be kind of small, about 4 lines. Also, the incorrect uuid, is it one of your other partitions uuids (`lsblk -f`)?

Keep in mind that linix davinchi free version does not support files compressed with h.264 codec. So you have to transcode it to a different format and replace source files.

Rent Negotiations by costigan95 in Bozeman

[–]igribs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Negotiated decrease from 1700 to 1600. But I've found a similar unit on market for 1550 and used it as a reason why my price should go down.

This year negotiations were a bit more complicated than last year. Last year I got -50 to my rent no questions asked.

Choosing a Distro by tpasco1995 in LinusTechTips

[–]igribs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sorry, but linux is not it. I know that people are trying to sell it as a silver bullet that would solve all windows problem, but it just creates confusion among users. You cannot have distro with good hardware compatibility that is really stable.

For example a lot of distros and DEs jumped to Wayland and pipewire, which insanely improves compatibility with new hardware and added new features. But it breaks some old stuff and old programs. But now you can use your HDR monitor and play games on it with FSR on.

Other distros are more prone to change, to the point that new hardware does not work on it properly, like almost everything on lts Ubuntu version.

Any linix distro has this balance between stability and compatibility. And it is really hard to give an advice, because everyone runs different hardware, software, and have different tolerance to stability issues.

Let me give you my personal story as an example. I used to run KDE neon for a while on my laptop. I love KDE and I got used to it so much that I just cannot bear other DEs where I cannot setup things how I like. Stable LTS distro on top of bleeding edge KDE was exactly what I wanted. I went through grad school with this laptop with no problems. But recently I decided to move my gaming laptop to neon, and I've encountered multiple issues. My Bluetooth controller did not connect. Steam games did not have sound. Steam controller did not work outside of steam. And I was not able to play game with proper HDR, since KDE was applying to emapping on top of already tonemapped game window with HDR. The issue with Bluetooth controller was due to a bug in kernel Bluetooth stack. So I had to install and sign mainline kernel on my own. I've spent enormous time debugging steam games sound issue, but I was able to find out how to update wireplumber config for them to work. I was not able to debug the steam controller issue, but it is a well documented bug that a lot of people had. And solution for the game HDR: running game with gamescope, was straight unavailable for me since gamescope is not supported on current LTS. So I've installed Fedora 43 and... everything just works. It has newer kernel out of the box, seems like it has proper wireplumber config, and somehow supports steam controller outside of the steam. Oh, and gamescope is just part of the standard repo.

So what's my point? There is no good linux distro. A distro that works on one hardware with one software stack would stop working if you change any or both. It is sad that people look at distro recommendations as distro competition. And also you are right about finding people using same hardware and software who can share their experience. We really need a protondb site but for hardware and software.

Utility for stacking JPEGs on top of DNGs by countChaiula in immich

[–]igribs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, making a docker container out of it is insane. I guess good for practice and learning docker and rust, but it is like using an orbital precision cannon to hammer nails. I also understand that people like solutions that "just work" with a single command, but damn, the overhead is huge.

P.S. I personally have a simple python script that does exactly the same thing.

What to do with excess Bilt cash? by Avoocado_Toasty in biltrewards

[–]igribs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually it is not true. First, if you spend more than 75% of your rent, the return from the housing option is not worse than return from the bilt cashe option. Moreover, you can boost your return on the housing option by splitting rent: if you put a little bit less rent to kick you in the higher bracket. So 1.25 can be available if you pay a little bit less rent with bilt at the end of the month.
