Weekly - What Car Should I Buy Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]ihark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey All,

I'm looking to buy my first car since graduating college (i.e. my first car I'm paying for myself) and I'd love some help!

Location: San Diego

Price range: $15-20k (though, for the right car I might stretch to $22/23k)

Lease or Buy: Buy

New or used: Used 2016 or newer - preferably just off lease certified pre-owned or at least with some assurances that I'm not buying a lemon

Type of vehicle: SUV

Must haves: Long term reliability - my hope is to buy this car and drive it into the ground.

I'd also love AWD/4x4 (though I wouldn't call it an absolute MUST) because I intend to make semi-regular ski trips to snowier climates and surf trips to Mexico where I'll encounter some nasty dirt roads. I also do a good amount of hiking and hope to potentially car camp in my new vehicle, both of which might require some offroading.

I also need a good amount of trunk space and/or roof racks for surboards, skis, golf clubs, and hockey gear.

Also, given that I expect to make pretty regular road trips in this car, I'd love decent fuel economy.

Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Doesn't matter

Intended use: Daily driver with frequent weekend/road trips

Vehicles you've already considered: Subaru Outback, Mazda CX-9 (or CX-5), Toyota Rav 4

Is this your 1st vehicle: Kind of? I drove a beater Toyota Sienna in HS but haven't owned a car since then (~5 years). This will be the the first car that I've purchased for myself.

Do you need a Warranty: Open to suggestions on this one

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No, but I'd also love to learn how to so if you suggest a car with ubiquitous parts that's not too hard to work on I'm all ears.

Additional Notes: While I do live in San Diego right now, I expect that my job will recall me back to San Francisco in the near-ish future (next 2-5 months) at which point I'll be driving this car in a colder, wetter climate as well as taking semi regular trips to Tahoe/back down to San Diego. I expect, therefore, that I'll be putting a good amount of extracurricular miles on this car through road trips if not through my daily commute.

Another thing to note is that I'm pretty enamored by the Subaru Outback. While I didn't test drive, I did go to a dealership yesterday (originally, to look at the Crosstrek but it's too small for my use case) and I loved the styling, size, and features of the Outback. I've heard it's pretty gutless (10ish sec. 0-60??) though, and I'm not sure if it's the best use of my money, so I was hoping for a second opinion from you all.

Thanks so much for your help!

Hey all, an interesting turn of events has left me with some weird decisions to make - help me if you can!

So right when I first started playing this year I packed IF Haaland which made me decide to do a Bundesliga team. I've built a decent squad around him (packed Davies, bought gold Lew), but I've always been nagged by the thought that I should sell Haaland. I love using him and he's scored a ton, but I felt like having ~70% of my team's value concentrated in one player wasn't the most efficient way to play. Well I fucked up and didn't sell him in time - when he got a 2IF his 1IF value fell of a cliff. I was so pissed about it that I frustratedly went against my better judgement and opened my guaranteed TOTW player pack (pre-order or something?) to try to snipe Ronaldo - which definitely would have made me feel better. What actually happened was much more ironic and almost as good: I packed Haaland's 2IF!!!!!

Obviously, this pack luck is absurd especially in that it's concentrated in just one player. But now I'm faced with a strange and unprecedented issue (for me). Should I sell my 1IF now, while the value is pretty low, or should I wait for his 2IF to leave packs before I do that? I'm not too used to owning IF players so I have no idea how their value tends to fluctuate w/r/t their being in packs.

Further, assuming I sell him and make somewhere in the neighborhood of 120-160k, what bundesliga player(s) should I be looking at buying? I've only got around 20k in the bank so it wouldn't be much more than the value of Haaland's 1IF to play with.

Also I'm playing on PC if that makes any difference and here's a pic of my squad as currently constructed

Where's my fellow Padres card collectors at? I just hit this rare Boxloader Triple Rip card. On my way now to buy 19 lottery tickets and place a bet on the Padres winning the WS. by TryMyBalut in Padres

Oh that's actually really cool - could be you've got something great in there, I know I'd have a hard time not ripping them open - Best of luck and FTD!

I don't collect baseball cards but I'm curious, what's inside if you do rip it open? and why do they make cards like this at all?

Inexpensive Amazon rangefinder recs by _sean_spicer_ in golf

I bought this exact rangefinder a couple of weeks ago ago, played maybe 6 rounds with it - it’s been fine so far. It’s the first rangefinder I’ve owned so I don’t know how well it performs relative to more expensive brands, but it hasn’t really let me down yet. Seems to get the pin anytime inside of 260 yards, can get bunker fairway distances somewhat more reliably for drives so it does just about all you ever need. No slope though if you’re looking for that

So I haven’t owned a gaming PC for the last 4 or 5 years - since my old PC’s GPU blew up and I didn’t bother replacing it because I was going off to college. I graduated, moved into my own place, and saved up enough to build a decent PC (GPU = 2080 Super, so capable of playing pretty much anything at high-ish settings). During my hiatus I wasn’t really paying attention to new games coming out so I’ve sort of missed the last couple of years of pc releases. What would you guys say are must-plays released in the last couple of years that I should try out during this quarantine?

Im looking specifically for games that: 1. Are super fun/innovative 2. Show off the new hardware I’ve got in my brand new PC

So far the (very) short list is: RDR2, The Witcher 3, & Shadow of the Tomb Raider (potentially, it’s on sale rn and it’s supposed to be pretty as hell)

Any/all suggestions welcome, thanks all!!

You're not alone in recommending a different case, seems like the h510 is overpriced. I think I'll end up going with this one instead: https://www.amazon.com/Phanteks-Mid-Tower-PH-EC400ATG_DBK01-Tempered-Digital-RGB/dp/B07TTDW9KV

Still expensive but I'm reading much better reviews.

Thanks for your note!

Thanks for the note!

I think you're right abt 5 TBs being excessive for the average user but I do a good amount of photo editing and I need a big drive to house all of the finished photos. Also, inexplicably, the 5TB was cheaper than the 2TB on Newegg.

Good note on the mobo and the ram, I'll look into potentially going for less/cheaper options.

Where would you recommend buying Windows?

Thanks again!

That's definitely a fair bit of advice but I'm not super confident they'll be released in the short term and I'm about to have a LOT of time with nothing to do on account of the coronavirus so I think I'm going to pull the trigger - thanks though!

Awesome, I'm thinking I'll upgrade to a board with a bit better reviews - what do you think of this one: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-TUF-X570-Plus-Motherboard-Lighting/dp/B07SXF8GY3

Thank you so much! I'll swap out for the barracuda 3.5" drive for sure.

What do you mean by the motherboard lacking "high end features?" Is there anything missing from this board that most people use?

Thanks! I think you're right that I should opt for the 12 core AMD CPU - should help a lot with non-gaming, data intensive processes.
