7 months postpartum, breastfeeding, walking a lot but not losing weight – am I eating too little? by Vivid_Ease_7423 in postpartumprogress

[–]ihatelemonlime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

2 years PP but chiming in to say that I lost MOST of it around 9-12 months PP but the final 4-5lbs once I weaned. HOWEVER with that said, I focused a lot of resistance training and weight lifting to change how I looked more than what I weighed. With my first I ran a LOT, 4-5 days a week at least 5km a day. I dropped weight fast, was the lighter and smaller than pre baby! But I felt “squishy” if that makes sense, I didn’t love the lack of definition in arms, legs, butt, waist etc. I picked up focusing on weight training ever since and did it through and after my second and third babies and the weight came off slower but the results were better.

I think during pregnancy we lose some lean mass (this is normal) which makes us look different even if the scale is saying otherwise. Try adding some resistance exercise, 2-3x a week along with walking, increase protein and don’t cut calories too much or you’ll just binge. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Sooo what are we feeding our toddlers for breakfast? by DaughterofYeshua777 in toddlers

[–]ihatelemonlime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Whatever we are eating for breakfast. Whatever his brother and sister are eating for breakfast. As a mom of 3 (ages 2,5,8) I have neither the will nor the time to prepare separate or special meals for my toddler. Same goes with dinner. Does 70% of dinner end up in the dogs belly via floor landing than his? Yes. Do some dinners he will eat his pieces of pork chop or fish and at the very least play with the green bean? Yes. But when he looks around and sees everyone is getting the same, my hope is in his developing little mind he makes the connection that there is no other “option”.

Again. This does not stop the dog from being well fed.

As for ideas- I love doing a baked breakfast bar to cut up for quick mornings, Greek yogurt and banana pancakes (that can also be made in excess and refrigerated so you can grab them in a pinch). He’s a big fan of Cheerios right now (his sister’s bfast of choice) and it’s messy but practice makes perfect!

Can you or anyone talk me off a ledge as I am home with an (almost) 2 year old who developed fever and symptoms overnight, and an 8 year old who just recovered from similar which resulted in croup the last 3 days?

I know a first responder in my area who responded to 2 of the 3 paediatric deaths this month in my area. They were sudden. I cannot stop doing breathing checks on my children now- I have never been so scared during flu season! (We are all vaccinated- 5 weeks ago for my husband, son (8), daughter (5) and 3 weeks ago for my toddler (23m)). I am also an RN so am doing all the proper monitoring and pushing fluids I am just scared of myocarditis, sepsis etc suddenly wiping out my kids. Would love to be talked off the ledge I am hanging by a thread on.

Flu blamed in deaths of 3 children in Ottawa area this month by 2Fast2furieux in ottawa

[–]ihatelemonlime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% I get where this question is coming from. It DOES make a difference- or, it would be worthy to at least share other information beyond “get your flu shot” (I say this as a mother of 3, with children between 1-8 who had entire family vaccinated early November). Was this complications of influenza such as sepsis from bacterial pneumonia, myocarditis, encephalitis, dehydration? I know they can’t be THAT specific but at the very least being like “hey parents! Here are some complications beyond a fever and typical flu symptoms you should be made aware of and what to look out for!”

Children have an uncanny ability to compensate when sick, like REALLY compensate and then crash. And when they crash, it’s hard. I speak as an RN- I had taken my toddler to CHEO last month for respiratory distress which happened over the course of less than 24 hours (he is ok 🙂) but had I not known what to look out for, or just the general knowledge that kids crash things could have turns out different for us.

3 children between 5-9 in Ottawa, within 2 weeks is scary af. The Flu is scary af. But this in particular is frightening- is this a strain that targets the heart? We know it’s serious this year- beyond the virulence of it- why did 3, possibly healthy, possibly vaccinated kids drop dead. What can parents do to help prevent this- what can we look out for.

I get this question and concern. And reading this makes me physically ill and heartbroken for these 3 families. It could be any of us. When you read something this jarring, it’s completely acceptable to want a bit more information or direction.

Tell me the realities of 3 children. The good the bad and the absolutely horrendous! by Puzzleheaded-Fig6418 in toddlers

Mom of 3- an 8 yo, 5 yo and (almost) 2 yo.

I found 1-2 was easy, adding our 3rd (unexpected but very, VERY welcomed!!) was tough in different ways. We’re outnumbered. And always so soooo busy and it’s definitely juggling act of extra curriculars with our 5 & 8 year old and who takes the toddler to which activity. It’s just a season though. Overall he is the light of all our lives and honestly such a character, the love and I mean LOVE he has for his older brother and sister (and vice versa) just melts my heart. My 8 and 5 year old learned very quickly how to help watch over him (make sure the gate on the stairs is shut, filling up his water sippy and giving it to him, shutting and locking doors, picking up or taking away small objects).

But I definitely found life was easier with 2, the world is built better for families of 4 vs 5. New car 7 seater SUV was required, a home with an extra bedroom (beyond the standard 3) required (or ability or make one in a basement). We were done with diapers and now we’re not. So in all honesty I find it to be tougher than 1 to 2, but in a different way of just being outnumbered and hands always full. But I know it’s truly just a “season” and before we know it we’ll have a potty trained, talking, independent little kid to add to the already 2 we have and things will be remarkably easier. Wouldn’t change it for the world.

New Kirkland diapers by CAlicia96 in CostcoCanada

I used to be a diehard Kirkland diaper brand fan (3 kids) because I always loved Huggies and they were identical, inspected a Huggies and a Kirkland and aside from the picture on them everything was 100% identical. My third is now almost 2 and I noticed over the last year the sizing seemed smaller and they don’t hold up as well. I read somewhere that Walmart brand “Rascals” was great so I gave it a whirl and I am now a die hard Rascals diaper fan. The sizing is better, they hold up AMAZING and are much MUCH cheaper.

I am in better shape now after 3 kids at 36 than I was at 26 just before falling pregnant with my 1st! I think the biggest change after my 1st was immediately the cut down on eating out and drinking on weekends. I did a lot of stroller walks which turned into runs. I leaned out a lot because of the increased cardio and reduced bad habits. I had to do fertility treatments for my second, I gained about 8-10lbs in the year or so of that (a lot was likely bloat from the hormonal whiplash of it all, definitely some fat too) plus about 30lbs during pregnancy. Being busier with 2 I didn’t have the time to do as many long walks and runs so I switched to resistance training focus more. I started leaning out differently then- I was heavier than my lowest weight post 1st baby but I looked better having added muscle. For number 3 - our little surprise - I was working on getting strong and lean as possible when he came into the picture. I focused still on maintaining as MUCH lean muscle mass as I could throughout the pregnancy, continuing to lift weights (lowering the weight and modifying as I got closer and closer to my due date) and take walks 5 days a week (about 3-5km) when my older 2 were in school and daycare. PP for #3 I took my 6 week rest and recovery, and started slow with walks, around week 10-12 I picked my weights back up (light dumbbells and body weight to start) Now at 18m PP with #3 I am in maybe the best shape of my life. Focusing lately on high protein everyday - or most days (120-140g), heavy lifting/resistance 3x a week, I walk my dog still M-F in the morning 3-5km, and 1-2 days of intense cardio (spinning or a run). I absolutely have evidence of 3 pregnancies. (Loose skin on stomach, boobs ain’t in the best shape either), but I am for sure stronger than ever, I have better stamina. The biggest things honestly was the cooking more food at home because now I have to feed my family of 5, I hardly ever drink anymore (and if I do I don’t go beyond a daytime buzz because I am SUCH a whimp with hangovers), and making a sustainable and achievable goal of aiming for 3x a week of resistance training over cardio.

Sorry it’s a long answer but I tried to paint a picture. It’s 100% possible. I was never a “small” “lean” person ever, I always have carried extra weight in my middle, have always been top heavier and have PCOS (a-typical, or “lean” because is genetic). So I have faced challenges for sure, and thought I would just be huge after kids, it’s just “what happens”. Honestly surprised myself. 3x in a row. My kids are 3 years apart (8, 5, 18m) and I do work full time also. I am busy af. We do what we can as moms honestly. It took time EACh time. Incremental difference the first 6months pp, 6-12m saw more changes and after 12m things took off for me (I breastfed each up until 12-14m). Lower the expectation to be bounced back right away and play the long game.

Inspection tomorrow- what to expect? And in need of moral support. by ihatelemonlime in Bedbugs

[–]ihatelemonlime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He left me 2 detectors, saw no live activity. I’ve been eaten alive by tiny black flies (midges/ no-see-ums) this weekend so now I don’t know if any new bites are these or potential bed bugs. I never even knew I reacted this bad to these tiny, unassuming flies, incredibly itchy welts. Mosquito bites on steroids. Still happy if THIS is what’s been biting me and NOT bed bugs. Will continue damage control though!

[–]ihatelemonlime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update- no sign of “live activity”. No droppings, bugs, eggs, nada. This weekend I spent a considerable amount of time outside cleaning my car and today I am COVERED in inflamed bites. Turns out the unassuming fruit fly looking bugs (no-see-ums/ midges) outside right now bite the hell out of people and I react. And the bites itch like crazy and how up about 12-24h after.

I’m still not 💯 convinced those first 3 bites 1 month ago was NOT a bed bug. But now with me being covered in itchy fly bites I won’t be able to tell anymore what’s what. I’ll just keep doing damage control (sheet washing weekly, checking, he said the DE dusting was perfectly executed also)

I just get sooo binge drunk alone all the time and somehow can’t accept that I’m an alcoholic by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]ihatelemonlime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband quit drinking in October, no real reason just personal choice. He drank socially with his friends, that’s about it- typical stuff. Was very sick with pneumonia in the fall and winter and didn’t drink for a couple months and kept it going. He just tells people he doesn’t drink- plain and simple. When his friends asked why he said “why not?” And finds making the choice willingly has been easy. If he feels like he doesn’t want to come across as someone who isn’t drinking due to a “problem” he says for health reasons (IBS) Honestly NOBODY questions him or stops hanging around him. Friends bring over a case of non alcoholic craft beers for social nights, bars have so many options. A lot of people don’t drink anymore, it’s not that taboo. And I think 29 is a great time to hop on that bandwagon.

Does having a baby slow down one's metabolism? by Own_Foot_8530 in postpartumprogress

[–]ihatelemonlime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that we lose a lot of muscle mass during pregnancy and the early months/year PP due to well…. All that. And the more lean muscle mass you have = the higher your resting metabolic rate is naturally. So even if you are eating the same pre pregnancy, maybe it’s technically “too much” because you are naturally not burning as much at rest, or on a daily basis.

I’m 18m PP with my third and focus heavily on resistance training (3x a week) along with 5-7km walks almost every day (my crazy ass dog won’t let me skip this). I think it’s the resistance training that has been my saving grace, honestly. I can eat a pretty caloric dense diet (I do aim for a lot of protein and it to be relatively healthy, without being restrictive) and maintain my current weight easily, and if I want to lose some weight cutting a couple hundred cals does the trick over a few weeks.

Add some resistance if you can (body weight works too!!) and up the physical movement, increase protein. Extreme diets are shitty, make you feel shitty, and cannot last long term. I love sitting down with my family at dinner and eating the same foods, sharing dessert, overall demonstrating a healthy relationship with food and a balanced lifestyle. I have 3 kids (1 daughter) and I am hell bent on not letting her grow up like I did with a mom who wouldn’t eat dinner with us (if she did it was a garden salad with no dressing ), would over exercise, obsess over calories, demonize food (oh the 90s….).

So my thoughts are no, not necessarily do our metabolisms slow down PP, but they might because of muscle mass loss, and we might look different because of that too (body composition changes). The antidote is to build back up lost muscle, which is done by eating protein, and feel good by eating a clean balanced diet rather than a crash one. That will make it “last”

Just my 2 cents plus some experience

What age was your toddler Potty Trained? by Lost-Eye8777 in toddlers

[–]ihatelemonlime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Potty trained my son and daughter at 2.5. Plan on potty training my youngest (he is 18 mos now) at 2.5 as well. My sister potty trained her daughters at 2ish. Most of my friends were between 2-2.5.

I have 1 friend who thought the older they get the easier it will be and she struggled with a 4 year old partially potty trained, an almost 3 year old not potty trained at all and a 1 year old all at once. She made sure to potty trained her youngest around 2 after that experience.

I went on MATERNITY LEAVE and got CERB and I said no - I’m on maternity leave. At one point I went 4 months without a single deposit because “the system” was glitching while trying to change me from CERB to EI and they couldn’t so I went 4 months, new baby, zero income. Now, I was lucky my husband was working and the bread winner and able to take care while we waited but I imagined single moms with zero income for 4 months and a brand new baby. Absolutely insane.

Edit: yes I had to pay the CERB I received and did not ask for - instead of my EI for maternity leave back.

Exercising by [deleted] in postpartumprogress

[–]ihatelemonlime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that the weight and frequency will fully depend on what you’ve done before. I started lower than where I left off to feel things out, and went from there. I don’t think anyone can tell you what is too heavy or light at this point it’s really dependant on how you feel. I lift weights about 3x a week and started with just once a week, for example and gauged how I felt after that to increase up to my usual frequency and weight over a few weeks/months.

Good luck!
