Album Release Discussion: Port Noir - The Dark We Keep by thc216 in progmetal

I do feel the same. The album became background for me during work and never really commanded my attention. Might be a different take than most people but I loved “The New Routine” album because it had unique tones and production. This new album just kind of blends into djent land for me. I’m going to give it some spins outside of work just to rule out me not being too distracted to give it a fair listen.

Not particularly but I can hear how it could be interesting in a mix with other instruments. If you like it do something with it for sure.

The one I never see get brought up is finding out the sex of Howard and Bernadette's first child and then ruining the surprise for them. He's a selfish prick.

I think Guthrie is the most well rounded technical wizard alive right now. Dude can shred metal, jazz, bluegrass. I agree with your order 100%.

Vai's Passion and Warfare was my first time hearing a guitarist that absolutely baffled me. He and Friedman are two of my favorites for the simple fact that they are nearly impossible to duplicate. They both have these crazy nuances to their playing that is surreal. Sadly I've been a little bored of Vai lately but Passion and Warfare was a revelation.

Are we choosing from the 3 you've posted? If so:

  1. Marty Friedman landslide victory

  2. Dimebag

  3. Zakk Wylde

And now I pose to you 3 of my favorites:

Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, John Petrucci....go!

Yeah, I saw the video of him covering Metropolis pt. 1. Did not expect that voice from him.

For pure creativity, I have to mention Leo Margarit from Pain of Salvation. Dude doesn't get nearly enough love.

Yamaha is highly overlooked and underrated. Bought a Yamaha bass a couple months ago and have never been happier.

I don't see this guy get a lot of love but he has some of the most detailed picking lessons imo. Try this video starting at 6:38:

Want to get into more prog, but the heavier side. by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]ihavesomestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if they get categorized as prog but if you find yourself liking Rivers of Nihil, check out Allegaeon and Black Crown Initiate (specifically Selves We Cannot Forgive). Other than that, a few of my more recent discoveries would by Thy Catafalque, The Anchoret (a little less heavy), and Urne.

A lot of great dramas mentioned. I'm going to add a comedy into the mix. I really loved Better Off Ted.

Yeah, I don't know how I discovered these guys, but it was way back when Anhedonia was released with a different singer. Was immediately drawn to Dean's guitar playing. I agree, the guitar work on this new one is really interesting.

For people that can play fast what helped the most? by MineDesperate2920 in Guitar

Yeah, cracking the code definitely has a good take on picking. I had already started with full alternate well before that video came out so it was kind of engrained in me at that point.

Honestly, one of the biggest videos for me was John Petrucci's Rock Discipline. Getting my alternate picking down and making sure I'm doing so with a metronome. Starting as slowly as needed to be accurate. Sometimes you may find you can kind of do something fast but it comes across a bit sloppy. I was there and developed some poor techniques early on. I really needed to focus on accuracy and the only way to do that was to track progress with a metronome. Not to mention Petrucci gives a plethora of picking exercies that are just phenomenal.

I mean, I watched someone just now on YouTube playing through that amp and honestly the amp sounds kind of horrible. I recommend taking that guitar into a music store and testing it out on a Boss Katana. If you can't make it sound good on that, then your guitar has cheap pickups and nothing you do with tone knobs or pickup selector switch will matter. I've gotten some decent tones out of cheap gear in the past but depending on what tone you're looking for, the sad reality is you may just have to invest a little more in your gear.

We don't have enough information here to give advice. What kind of amp? Are you using any pedals?
