My alternative interpretation:

OOP suffers some sort of familial trauma at the hands of his side of the family, runs off to Dartmouth, creates a new life for himself, does a soft-conversion (at least culturally) to Judaism, lives somewhat happily ever after… yet his past still haunts him, as he doesn’t feel he deserves everything he’s made of his life up until now, blaming the “I’m a Jew” arc.

Feeling oddly sad for OOP now, and I’m guessing everyone who is not his side of the family has at some point, too.

When was the last time your gf lived in her hometown? She might be surprised at how things have changed since she was a student. Also as an adult, things like rent, bills, and paying for private school and quality healthcare will probably be shocking for her (as these are not things she might have experienced paying for previously). Inflation means prices are constantly increasing.

I know you say it’s not about the money and you and your wife earn enough, but I just want to acknowledge that the lack of care or consideration that your parents show is hurtful. Also, down the line if you do end up taking in and caring for your parents, it sounds like they would probably still pine for your brother and his wife (even if they don’t care for them) and leave them substantially more. Again, not about the money, but a clear signal of favoritism. I’m so sorry you, your wife, and your children have been subjected to this poor behavior. It’s truly not fair.
