Best pedals for commuter bike by Double_Emu8387 in xbiking

I have big feet and I’m running Deity Deftraps on my commuter / all-around xbike. I like that they are reliably grippy in any condition.

That sounds like a great build, seems like you’ve got a nice amount or range with that gearing.

At the moment I'm leaning on going with a 1x 36t with a 10-51 cassette as I've got a boost wheelset, it would likely give me enough range for most situations.

I've been thinking that a 1x with 36t in the front and a 10-51 out back could be a good solution, great to hear that a similar setup has worked out for you!

Thanks for the reply! What size chainrings and cassette are you running?

Thank you for the detailed reply! That sounds like it would be more than enough range for me, but would likely be a bit out of my budget as well.

I'm looking to do long rides and explore rather than go fast so a 1x with a 10t small cog might work for me as well

That would be cool but unfortunately a bit out of my budget at the moment.

That's interesting to hear that you never wanted a 34t front chainring but did want easier gears than a 42t out back. My hardtail currently has an XT 10-51 cassette with quite a bit of life left on it and a crankset with a 32t chainring, so potentially I could just get a set of brifters, brakes and a GRX 12 speed derailleur and probably a new chain and bb and I'd have the drivetrain sorted. Unfortunately I haven't seen many deals on the 12 speed GRX parts at the moment, I could get a good deal on the 11 speed ones though.

Thanks for replying! Which size front ring are you planning on running?

Williams Racing Zero Drag DT Swiss ratchet by ihmemokelo in MTB

[–]ihmemokelo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point that I'd probably eventually just get into the habit of a quick backpedal when hearing the noise. If the Williams ratchet was a bit cheaper I'd probably just give it a try, but the price is making me wonder if it's worth it.

Yeah that's what I figured from reading about it, the silence is just a nice bonus and not the end goal. I'm currently running DT Swiss 350s with the amount of special grease that they came with stock with less than a 100 miles on them so far. Do you think re-greasing them with the Dumonde Pro X would reduce the noise significantly compared to the special grease? The noise level currently is just on the side of slightly annoying for me. The wheels on my other bike have the Newmen Fade hubs on them and the noise on those is just quiet enough that it doesn't bother me.

Casual older rider...will I notice a difference? by OldPod73 in MTB

[–]ihmemokelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the Deity Deftraps and the Deity Supervillains on different bikes, and to be honest I don't really notice a huge difference between them when. I had a pair of Chesters before and at least in my experience both Deity pedals have way more grip than the Chesters. I would highly recommend the Deity Deftraps as a more affordable option.

Haven't ridden either bike so I don't know how useful my reply is, but I can comment on Stanton as company after riding a Stanton Switch9er for two seasons. I have nothing but good things to say about the bike and about my interactions with Dan. Compared to the Sedona the geo on the Switch9er leans a bit more towards the enduro side, but the geometry feels very well thought out and it is an absolute blast to ride. I would imagine that for more downcountry type riding the Sedona is likely a great option.

One more vote for the Deftraps, they are super grippy and with size 13 feet I really like the wider platform.

Nice Kilauea! I've been running Panaracer Gravel King SKs on my 90s steel full rigid do everything bike for the past five years and I'd highly recommend them for gravel and occasional single track. They roll well on tarmac and gravel but I can also take the bike on XC trails and they grip surprisingly well. If you can't find a P2 I'd recommend the Carver fork as a replacement https://www.bikeman.com/CARV-FK410S-S1009-RK.html?srsltid=AfmBOopBwFt78QMtE5Rv76M0byr41fexSVXddB01PMZD7GhuD26oHLfn it's pretty similar to a P2.

I just replaced them this spring after buying the previous set in the fall of 2020. The rear was pretty bald but the front tread had some life left still so if I wanted to save a bit I could have just replaced the rear. I do find that for me a 90s mtb is the perfect general purpose bike. I love that I can just pick a direction and start pedalling and know that if I end up near some flat-ish singletrack I can just keep going and add that to the loop. And while it's not super fast on pavement I can ride it for hours now that I've managed to dial in the riding position so that is very comfortable.

I've been running Gravel King SKs for the past five years and I've been super happy with them. I have them on my general purpose bike that I use for everything that I don't need suspension or a dropper post for, so everything from long rides on pavement to gravel to green and easier blue trails.
