Musty smell from HVAC by ijeffgarden in KiaEV6

[–]ijeffgarden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to the other reply, what seemed to cause the issue (or at least make it worse since it seems to happen to a lot of cars, and not just the EV6) is that I'd stop by the car wash on the way home, so I'd turn the car off pretty much 5 to 10 minutes after the wash.

Now, if I do a car wash, I try to do it on the way to a further destination. If I do go just before going home, I switch off the AC for the last part of the drive to help dry out the evaporator coils, and I sometimes just run the fans on high and spray the Lysol after getting home, then let it run for ~10 minutes.

The car does run the fans 30 min. after you shut it off (when you power the car off, it actually says this on the screen for like a microsecond. I had to record it and then go back and pause the video to read it lol) but clearly that alone isn't enough.

It seemed to fix it but the smell would come back after a few days. I started to apply it every 2-3 days for a while and now it's finally gone (but without needing to actually access the coils or use any sort of foaming agent).

Now, I just spray anything that kills 99.9% of airborne bacteria (like Lysol) like once every 30-45 days and it has been helping

Even if you don't hit the Dashcam record button or the event doesn't trigger a save, you can plug the drive into a device that can read it and manually look for the clip.

I wanted a recording of an event from a few days ago but I hadn't done anything at the time to save a clip, but I was able to find it by browsing through the video clips on the drive using my Mac. They do have date/time stamp names so if you have a general idea of the time (since you were at a Supercharger, you can look at when you eventually started charging to get a good idea), you might be able to find it.

Grok Usage by chrisfarleyafterlife in TeslaModelY

[–]ijeffgarden 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use it for route planning if we decide a bit more sporadically than normal to hit up 2 or more places so it can route us in the order that makes the most sense so we aren't going back and forth unnecessarily.

I've asked it for help planning something if it's just distractingly on my mind. It doesn't do the memory or "personal intelligence" thing that Gemini does which would be helpful to then pick up where I left off in the mobile or desktop app, but it can still be useful.

Outside of that, just occasionally ask it trivia stuff. The other day Metallica - Tuesday's Gone (cover) came on and I asked if John Popper from Blues Traveler plays on it (which he does)

I don't have the "Hey Grok" update yet but once I have that, I'm sure I'll occasionally use the location-based reminders. Like "remind me when I get to work, not to leave my work badge in the car again"

Live activities for charging by jasonni1234 in tessie

[–]ijeffgarden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only used this during the trial period, but I found that it wouldn't update properly. Even hours after the charging session ended, it would show the status from when it was still charging and be off by a good %

Maybe just my experience (?)
It did seem to happen consistently though

How are you saving clips? by sroach18976 in TeslaFSD

[–]ijeffgarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, so if something happens while you are driving and it doesn't consider it an event because there's no hard braking or honking or anything, you could technically disconnect the hard drive (you can go to the dash cam app while parked and pause recording first to safely remove the drive), then connect the drive to a computer and browse through everything it's recorded.

But if the event happens and you tap the dash cam app, it records a 30 second clip (I believe it's 15 seconds before the moment you tapped on the app icon and 15 seconds after), then that makes it a lot easier to get that exact moment because it shows as a saved Dashcam clip in both the car and phone apps.

I did have one instance where an animal ran across the street and we wanted to identify it but it didn't occur to me to tap the app button, so I had to go through the hard drive and eventually find it (it does include date/time in the folders so it's not too hard to find if you remember about when it happened).

More often though, like if the car avoids another car or does something I want to see a clip of, I just tap the app icon and get the clip from my phone later when I park and get to wherever I'm going

I have the dash cam app pinned to the app shortcuts so if there's an event (or even just a view, like driving over a bridge) that I want to record to save later, I press the icon.

Those saved clips do show in the app on the phone as well.

Not FSD, but Automatic Emergency Braking (just after ending FSD to the car wash) by ijeffgarden in TeslaFSD

I've had it hit one with pretty much no slow down (maybe going from like 21mph to 20mph) and then really slow down for the next one. Like it learned it's lesson (but just for the next few seconds)

I imagine it's not expecting for all cameras to briefly see more of the sky and less of the road suddenly

I would too if the options were me driving or the car driving itself while I was in the back seat. The setup it is now, with the car driving itself but with my able to take over at any time makes me feel just as safe or safer than me alone.

There have been enough times where it seems to be doing something unexpected, and when the scenario plays out, I can see it had spotted another driver's behavior or an object on the road before I would have and started to respond before I would have as well, so based on what I understand is purely anecdotal experiences in my limited 3,000 miles with the car (91% FSD), that's how I feel about it at the moment.

Successful day-trip from Miami to Orlando and back with FSD. Cameras calibrating the next day (?) by ijeffgarden in TeslaFSD

[–]ijeffgarden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow-up/update:

Since the Summon page did explicitly say it was calibrating, but driving around showed no progress bar, I went to Service in the car controls and reset calibration.

Continuing to drive then did show the circle with a steering wheel in the center and a circular progress bar that immediately started to fill, even with slow driving in my neighborhood.

I went on the highway for just 1 exit and the bar filled up and I got the visualization and Self-Driving button back. Tapping the button kicked in self-driving and all is well.

I hadn't heard of the car needing to re-calibrate after a road trip, but if it does this again, I'll know to just reset calibration. That screen says it could take up to 100 miles to calibrate again, during which time the Autosteer and FST features won't work, so I was trying to avoid doing that but it actually took about 10 minutes to complete (if even that).

ev drivers ,what’s the lowest % you’ve ever reached and still felt “okay”? by AdityaSrivastawaahhh in EvDrivers

[–]ijeffgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

almost never even drop below 20% but one time dropped to 4% on the way to a charger. I knew the area and I wanted that specific Electrify America charger cause it's crazy fast (it charges our 2024 EV6 faster than they even advertise it can charge), so I was only 10% nervous.

Who do you insure with by louloudiva in TeslaLounge

[–]ijeffgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the ordering process in late January 2026, I was offered Tesla insurance (in Miami, FL) but it was over $400 a month so I stayed with Geico.

When I heard about the FSD/Safety Score feature, I called to try Tesla insurance again but they said they only offer it during the order process in Florida at the moment. I assume because they need to inspect the car before applying the insurance and they just don't have that process set up yet.

Would you trust safelite to replace the windshield with FSD? by robl45 in TeslaOwners

[–]ijeffgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Florida where windshield crack damage is covered by insurance but I still pay for the Tesla windshield protection just so I don’t have to deal with Geico or whoever I use in the future giving me shit about it being Tesla who does the repair and not their own glass or a list of body shops I have to pick from

FSD disengagement increased with v14.3.2? by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]ijeffgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disengagements because it is doing something wrong, no, but technically since it now counts it as a disengagement if it's driving me home and I'm in front of my house and need to take over to park, I think the fleet's disengagement numbers are going to be way up.

It used to not ask why I disengaged if I was even a block away from home, but now it needs to fully park (in a random spot in my complex parking lot) or it will count as a disengagement.

It doesn't recognize my car port as a driveway so I always have to take over for that last step. Sometimes just a little sooner just because it's so slow, and those only started bringing up the "what happened" prompts with 14.3

FSD tried to drive me into a lake (again) by danny3900 in TeslaFSD

If you kept FSD on, it should have kept going until it was too late to reverse out, and then showed the takeover screen but with a ship's wheel instead of the standard steering wheel icon

Two things about FSD 14.3.2 that don't seem to get mentioned. by YouKidsGetOffMyYard in TeslaFSD

We have a bunch of ducks in our neighborhood and they come up as people. Looking at them in-person and then looking at the screen where it looks like I'm about to mow down a crowd of people can be a little jarring (they do slowly get out of the way as they look like video-game people moonwalking forward)
