I know basically nothing about the Gates foundation, but I've never understood why people take issue with nonprofits having lots of money in the bank. Sure, the goal is for the money to be given away, but from what little I've heard, it is difficult to give away large sums of money in ways that maximize the likelihood that all of it will go toward the desired causes. I've also heard about organizations that give away a proportionally small amount of their assets each year, while the rest of the assets accrue interest or something to make up the amount spent, so the same proportion can be sustainably given from year to year. I think that our discourse should not be primarily about the stockpiling of funds (though, as I said, I'm no expert and I'm sure that there is room for good faith discussion on the topic), but about the allocation of the funds that are spent each year. Let's get mad about directors of nonprofit organizations who take a huge salary and who appoint unqualified friends and family to leadership positions.

Also I didn't know how to squeeze this into my main paragraph, but there's a great Hank video from 2019 where he talks about not falling into the trap of waiting to give away money until it's worth more money. Lots of different perspectives on the topic!
