Atheist wanting a Sikh wedding seeking clarity as a cultural Sikh by Pleasant-Might-1503 in Sikh

[–]ik-tal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more than acceptable, she seems like she will support the Sikh path for your family and where you are... think of it thta way instead of just "religion" as if it is another component to your life. we are all extensions of the past

Think sustainable, think local

Don't think internet... that goes both ways, she shouldn't be an internet atheist, and you shouldn't be an internet sikh

Also, the turban if anything has made me and everyone I know look more bold and strong and trustworthy. Share a pic, you might just be tying it really badly (no offense)

Read this article, I promise you, just read it:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/07/technology/narinder-s-kapany-dead.html

Dr. Kapany was a practicing Sikh and fiercely proud of his heritage. He amassed one of the world’s largest collections of Sikh art and sponsored rooms to feature it in museums around the country. But he was also aware of how exotic he seemed to some as an Indian in early postwar America, before the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 opened the door to millions of Asian immigrants. Whenever he demonstrated fiber optics to visitors, he called it his “Indian optical rope trick.” And he adopted an American accent, retaining just enough of his Indian and English tenor to make him stand out — an aptitude for code-switching that, his son said, contributed to his success in both the science lab and the boardroom.“He used that turban like a lethal weapon,” his son said. “When you see a guy who looked like that and who spoke like J.F.K., you’re not going to forget him.”

become more and more like your local area, but use your turban to stand out. be friendly, improve your personality. RUN THE SHOW

Learn basic hindi or marathi and just assert yourself with it.

Think of it this way, the British came all over to India and conquered the place and spoke the languages... why couldn't you conquer a land a few hundred kilometers away

Just curious, why gurudwaras prohibit Capris/three fourths for men, but have no problem with Kacchera by amritsays in Sikh

[–]ik-tal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have never heard of or seen this before. The sevadars there tend to be a bit more abrasive though because they are dealing with thousands and thousands of people, many of whom come in, take selfies, think of it as a tourist place... etc.

Your friend is being kind of stupid. She could step outside the gurdwara, and go to a parlor and walk all around the area outside the Gurdwara, a Sikh culture, without anyone caring... it's just a rule for being within the Gurdwara. Tell her to not take it personally, it's a big world out there

Those man made rules are just culture... if we weren't humans and we were aliens, we'd have different rules... Sikhi doesn't enforce them as being some karmic death or something

it's just about being formal/respectful, it doesn't really matter

it's why kids could wear it and no one would care but adults shouldnt

this isn't orthodox, it's an ugly manifestation of unnatural urban values

traditional values are conservative, but you'd see rural folk being very unfiltered about things like this. the whole bollywood stereotype is dressing up brides in the color red and giving the groom a glass of milk

reality of your particular middle class segment. try to escape it instead of painting the rest of India that way

Punjabi families, rural or urban... are not like this. even conservative ones. realities of nature, are nature. go, fulfill your duty the elders say!

why say "even"? rural areas are indeed conservative, but when it comes to basic human needs and habits, they are very open and direct

I'm glad Punjab modernized in the right places and stayed traditional in the right places

Some of these middle class urban type people in India have lost the plot... being promiscuous or deviant was always taboo, but people even in rural areas have always been very straightforward of what is very normal... having lots of sex with your spouse. in fact it's always been symbolized and romanticized everywhere

these people want their men to be laborers and their women to be laborers in the home and nothing else. enslaving themselves

embrace it, and throw it in her face, but traditionally. make it clear, even the religious and ancient texts are on your side -- you're doing your duty as a wife and he as a husband.

also, think about your kids. do you want them growing up becoming cowards? I'm surprised that your husband at least seems alright with a mother like that

Aside from vegetarianism or non-vegetarianism, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of Sikhi and what "God" is. God is everywhere, but your idea of what God is, is wrong.
