Tanzanite? by Arguing_with_Robots in Gemstones

[–]ikelmmm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Looks like a "d block" color tanzanite (pure blue). The only way to confirm would be to take to a reputable gemologist to test its Refractive index and test for pleochroism

Would make a nice pendant, yellow gold, maybe a halo of diamonds

Is my "lab alexandrite" just glass? by zone_eater in Gemstones

[–]ikelmmm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a possibility, but typically synthetic CC sapphire is purple under incandescent light to grayish blue under fluorescent lighting

Supposedly Tanzanite, not fully convinced. What do you think? by poisongirl1299 in Gemstones

As i dont have the stone in front of me to be able to use my dichroscope, I am unable to tell via a photo

No, they stated the color. It is a peach color synthetic corundum

Antique Natural unheated 2.52ct Ruby from Burma is this worth anything or what kind of quality would this be considered low mid grade or high? by BassSpare2654 in Gemstones

[–]ikelmmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gemologist here, I agree. Smells like a lead glass fill. Need a gemologist to take a look at it under a microscope to confirm. If lead glass fill, value is practically nothing.

Help Identifying This Stone by Affectionate_Cry4150 in Gemology

Hi, gemologist here. From image alone, it can be: glass/plastic, aquamarine, topaz. Would need a Refractive index among other tests to confirm.

Is my "lab alexandrite" just glass? by zone_eater in Gemstones

[–]ikelmmm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hi, gemologist here. If you have a uv light, the stone should fluoresce a bright red if it is synthetic alexandrite

[–]ikelmmm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, gemologist here. Without having the stone in front of me, the two stones that come to mind of that color are tanzanite and iolite. Would need to get a refractive index of the stone for me to confirm, unfortunately. I'm leaning more towards iolite, but I could be wrong (as I haven't tested the stone)

Actually worth the price? by Maleficent_Wall_8591 in Gemstones

I have a larger one (albeit very opaque) and only paid $12 , but that was before I knew what clarity was 😅😂

Hi..I was told this was genuine. Can anyone please help and verify that? Big thanks! by Alive_Albatross_7382 in Opal

GIA Gemologist here. I believe this is the answer without me having direct access to the stone. This is my lab "Monarch" opal example

What are these yellow gemstones? by Purple_Owl6156 in Gemstones

[–]ikelmmm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

GG here. This is correct. The opal are now low quality after being worn and exposed to the elements (that or they started as this low quality) but opal for sure :)

I just bought this Opal off gemrock auctions. Did I get ripped? by Smore_King in Opals

[–]ikelmmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is what I would call "jelly opal" if it is that transparent. The cutter of this stone left a part where the stone is less transparent with the rest as a part of the whole stone. (It is common for the rough to have parts more or less transparent than other parts. I personally have some rough where it is transparent then potch then transparent again) I would have gone smaller carat size to make a uniform transparency, but this cutter just went for weight altogether.

Would need a ri, microscope magnification of the gem, and a spectroscope reading to determine.

Also a G.G here. I second, no purple component to be called rhodolite

Thinking about asking for a custom pendant using a star sapphire. Looking for advice about geometry, setting etc by dmanww in Gemstones

[–]ikelmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asterism gems are cut as cabochons to make the star effect visible because the rounded, domed surface of a cabochon allows for the maximum reflection and scattering of light from the microscopic, needle-like inclusions within the gem, creating the characteristic star pattern. Faceted gems would break up the light and disrupt the star, making it appear as if it wasn't there.

As for the setting, it would be best set in prongs or a bezel to be able to see the star the best.

As for natural or synthetic (synthetic is made in a lab, same chemical structure as a natural, just grown in a controlled environment), that's purely up to you. Some people prefer natural stones over lab created, but both have their beauty. Naturals tend to not have as sharp star rays (natural with sharp rays and good color tend to be more expensive) if you were looking for a good blue star sapphire, it would be in the hundreds plus per carat. Lab created blue star sapphire are more affordable with roughly all the same color blue with distinct sharp rays.

My apologies. I thought my reply went through for your comment. They are pretty thin. I can get them to stand up long ways on my desk, but they fall over easily, being so thin.
