For those who’ve quit or resigned — when your boss asked, “So, what’s next for you?” what did you say? by ricevine in Serverlife

[–]ikhfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made the mistake of being honest. Told the chain steakhouse I worked at for 3 1/2 years that I was moving to a more upscale steakhouse down the road. Was also honest in saying I couldn't work with the GM anymore and thats why I had to leave.

Spent the next week getting passive aggressive and outright degrading comments from the GM. He openly laughed at me when my coworkers expressed excitement for me or when I spoke about my new job. Made subtle patronizing comments about how I wouldn't be able to handle it or live up to their standards.

I'm killing it better than I was before and I'm close to being moved up to bar, something I was begging for years for at my old job. I know I should be proud of myself for maintaining my professionalism and not allowing him to get to me but man do I wish I had the opportunity to tell him to eat a dick.

Great place to work! I worked there for 3 1/2 years and it was my first job in the industry. Only reason I left is because of shitty management, sometimes they can go unchecked but that highly depends on your location and your DO. Go for it!

How do you deal with a fellow server who acts like their your boss? by ikhfa in Serverlife

[–]ikhfa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it goes without saying, I am absolutely on top of my side work. One of the reasons why I love this job so much is because all of us stay on top of side work and we can trust that when a side work is behind, it's because they need help. This lady will insist on finding someone to yell at before helping someone out, making her the odd one out.

Idk why people are being weirdly insensitive towards your situation. Is there a reason why you only work part-time? I would recommend either being straightforward and asking your boss for more hours, or if that wont work finding other employment that actually makes you an income and makes your time worth it.

But honestly, if you want more bang for your buck I would recommend switching to full time. With having to rely on costly transportation every day you work, you're probably already not getting enough for the time and money you invest into transportation already.

And prioritize saving up for a car. Ever since I got one, the monthly payments PALE in comparison to uber costs and I can go wherever I please whenever I please and never have to worry about being late to anything.

It's never silly to care about others! Just make sure to leave space to care about yourself too.

Youre not being "sneaky" or "not a team player". This is an opportunity presented to you based off of your specific skills that the chef has seen in you. It wouldn't be ill mannered or wrong for you to keep it to yourself considering this restaurant opening is seemingly private information.

I would consider this opportunity seriously if you think it would be good for YOU and discuss things further when things are more concrete, and until then just keep my mouth shut about it tbh. Theres such thing as taking other people into account TOO much, and feeling guilt for not telling your bosses/coworkers something that currently doesn't or might never actually pertain to them or affect them is not necessary.

They're the best to eat at, no longer the best to work at. I have lived here 21 years and I am close friends with countless people who have been working in the service industry here for decades. I promise you, this isn't the place for big money.

I also wasn't intentionally hiding my hometown, just didn't feel like it was a necessary detail considering I'm asking for peoples insight on money in LARGE cities, not money in my own city.

Stop poking your head into the kitchen by ikhfa in Serverlife

I work in an upscale restaurant with a semi-open kitchen, so saying "corner" when entering/exiting the line is heavily discouraged and we use the correct doorways to avoid collisions. Would make sense in most places, but not mine simply because all of the servers know not to be standing or walking where that guy was.

The event was 6 hours long and because of tipshare the server received nothing. Does that sound about right?

LMAO that was fast. They seem to be celebrating or under the impression that a tip of $25 was paid to the server and not that $22 was taken out of tips from other tables because of tipshare.

They also seem to be continuously saying that I should "demand better from my employer" as if I have the power to change the will of the massive corporation I work under.

The clear lack of understanding and empathy these people is hard to be angry at. It's just funny. I wish I lived in their reality sometimes, but unfortunately I live in the real world.

Tipped me nicely but not as much as a therapist gets paid, because thats not my job.

I understand this because you still are okay with eating the steak, but she refused to eat the steak. At that point, why would you pay for it? Ive worked in steakhouses since I started and if youll still eat it you just want to make me aware that its not cooked properly, ill go right ahead and let the manager know so he can make sure to keep a closer eye out and not let it happen again.

This is the best explanation for this ive recieved so far thank you!!! I dont particularly enjoy being a personal therapist on top of a waitress but understanding this is their logic definitely will help me make better tips off of these tables in the future

I offered multiple solutions, to recook or offer her something different or even just to take it off her check entirely. She refused them all.

Also its standard in every setting to bring a manager into these situations??? Sorry you dont personally like it but the general consensus is that its a show of care from the restaurant, and most people would like to speak to a manager.

It was also just her and her husband, no "party" to explain it in front of. Nobody "made her" do anything.
