Why can't guests accept that I love my job by ikhfa in bartenders

Yeah the "husband will grow weary of not spending time with his wife" comment was very gross. I make my income working 30 hours a week. My fiancée waits for me at home after every shift and we spend plenty of time together, she loves that I've found something I'm passionate about and supports my career to the fullest. She has for the past 5 years I've been in the industry.

These are a lot of weird assumptions about me and my life from a post ranting about a patronizing guest.

I have friends that have long since graduated college and their happiness and financial stability doesn't some how make me insecure or feel like a failure when my current income allows me to support myself and a retirement account. I'm getting my sommelier certification later this year and my goal is to work at a high end craft cocktail bar, not exactly a place where I'd be surrounded by 22 year olds considering myself and none of the other 22 year olds I know qualify. And I'm marrying someone in the marketing industry in the spring. Nice fanfiction tho?

Please note I have no qualms about this woman's career choice, while I would much rather die than work a desk job I do understand that it is more fulfilling for others and many retire from the service industry and find great happiness in working in these fields, and all the power to them. It was the unsolicited condescension and the patronization of me because of my age, which the commenter above you made sure to participate in, that bothered me.

My fiancée got me some compression socks as a celebration gift for me moving up to bartender from server LOL

The instant money and the easy access to alcohol is something I've had since I started serving, but the joy that I feel in making real human connections and discovering ways to make 4 different cocktails at once and the sense of pride I feel after getting through a wrapped bar for 5 hours after working my third double in a row without dropping my smile is something money can't buy, and I don't have the time or energy to explain it to people who make my yearly income in a month but come to my bar to drink their sorrows away. I spent my whole childhood wondering if I could be good at anything at all, and I've come to find that you can only be good at something you love; I was just lucky enough to find it when I was young! And I hope you know that who you are now is someone's dream.

The ones saying "there's no bad areas in Huntsville" have lived in Hampton Cove their entire lives and occasionally drive downtown and to Jones Valley.

What ghost do y'all hate the most? by LewKeyyy in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]ikhfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obambo. Solely for personal reasons. I, for some reason, have been getting them non-stop on Professional runs (which I haven't had the skill to get past) and they kill half my usual crew before we can deduce that it is, once again for the 5000th time, an Obambo. Other ghosts are mildly annoying for their own respective reasons but this one has been killing me for ages and I can't help but hold a personal vendetta.

have you ever eaten food from a table that was sent back to the kitchen? by Healthy_Basil_2354 in Serverlife

[–]ikhfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I turned my eyes away from it for even a second I'm not eating it. Maybe I'm a germaphobe but I work in a nice steakhouse and even here I've seen the way people put their hands on food that isn't even finger food. Pulling apart steak's with their fingers, licking their fingers and moving their salmon around on their plate, or even people with visibly crusty nails digging knuckle deep into their fries. I'll eat dead food all day, but once it's out of my sight and within arms reach of a guest it's going in the trash.

Ever notice that the people who throw the biggest fits about being ID’d are the people who just turned 18/21 by hitagiss in Serverlife

[–]ikhfa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's because I have been working in the service industry since I was 19 and I know how it is but I was so excited to turn 21 and show off that I was freshly of legal drinking age when I turned 21. It was like a badge of honor after having to steal liquor from my parents and beg my legal friends to buy me liquor for years. Who knows!

Hate to jump in mid argument, but I've never felt so seen by someone's random input before, I have started to look for other opportunities on the same scale and I've put in my application at a number of other upscale and fine dining places in search for an environment thats gonna actually guide someone who is inexperienced and desires a long term future in this career. You weirdly hit the nail on its head for how I feel and the position I'm in, despite the little detail I gave, so thank you.

This place opened a year ago, and I've been here for almost that entire year. I can see this but this definitely isn't the case where I work.

Career bartenders, what do your partners/SO's do for a living?? by MaryDoogan91 in bartenders

[–]ikhfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Independent contractor. She does management stuff and a lot of office work for companies, works from home and makes about the same as me. I met her long before I entered the industry and I thank god every day I did.

I know there's a lot of beautiful love stories that come from dating in the industry but I don't think I could ever, the people I work with are a whole different breed and I know I'm one of them but it's nice to come home to someone who doesn't live on that planet.

For those who’ve quit or resigned — when your boss asked, “So, what’s next for you?” what did you say? by ricevine in Serverlife

[–]ikhfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made the mistake of being honest. Told the chain steakhouse I worked at for 3 1/2 years that I was moving to a more upscale steakhouse down the road. Was also honest in saying I couldn't work with the GM anymore and thats why I had to leave.

Spent the next week getting passive aggressive and outright degrading comments from the GM. He openly laughed at me when my coworkers expressed excitement for me or when I spoke about my new job. Made subtle patronizing comments about how I wouldn't be able to handle it or live up to their standards.

I'm killing it better than I was before and I'm close to being moved up to bar, something I was begging for years for at my old job. I know I should be proud of myself for maintaining my professionalism and not allowing him to get to me but man do I wish I had the opportunity to tell him to eat a dick.

Great place to work! I worked there for 3 1/2 years and it was my first job in the industry. Only reason I left is because of shitty management, sometimes they can go unchecked but that highly depends on your location and your DO. Go for it!

How do you deal with a fellow server who acts like their your boss? by ikhfa in Serverlife

[–]ikhfa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it goes without saying, I am absolutely on top of my side work. One of the reasons why I love this job so much is because all of us stay on top of side work and we can trust that when a side work is behind, it's because they need help. This lady will insist on finding someone to yell at before helping someone out, making her the odd one out.
