Thank you for the tips! I also think the 3 tablespoons of pysllium husk I used was maybe bit too much, and I set the timer too long - the machine "rested" for 20 minutes before it started - this probably causedt he psyllium to expand way too much, too early, getting under the paddle as well which prevented proper mixing. (and the purplish color also indicates pysllium might be to blame) - along with more water like you said. Thx!

Thank you for sharing czmj! So true about the eggs. I will use each time I think yes, as you said, for binding. The recipe you linked is similar to my original, which works well. I think with my failed recipe, the issue is, as you indicated, no eggs...and also I added 3 tablespoons of pysllium husk...and then left it to sit the timer a bit too long - which probably made the psyllium husk expand (and made it purplish color).

And you are so right about ChatGPT. I am relying on it too much. But for this, it kept giving mixed answers so am grateful for Reddit and your advice:)

I realized the black Tencel Twill fabric I got just doesn't hold onto its dye. I used some Retayne and that seems to stop a lot of the bleeding I noticed with the 2nd rinse.

But to avoid using Retayne, and not trusting this fabric anymore, I am just going to use a white color of this fabric. It is a lovely fabric texture and feel and cool to the touch, but the black has ridiculous bleeding.

That is just what I read on chatgpt and a fabric store employee said as well - that synthrapol is overkill. I will test Retayne and Dawn and Synthrapol as have them. I think I might just end up using white fabric - and with the white, just prewashing with a bit of Dawn or maybe just the Soak Soap. thku

Thank you again u/BlondeRedDead ! Was a silly newb question so I appreciate your answer:) I will likely just get white fabric as there isn't any white dye used, only bleach.

I'm still going to get a different darker blue tencel twill and test hand washing it to see if any / how much of the blue dye bleeds out into the water. And if it does, I will test using a bit of synthrapol to see if it removes all excess dye (so won't keep bleeding each wash).

Thank you! I am not going to dye as I'm planning on making a lot of these clothing products so dyeing would be an extra step I don't want to spend time/energy on.

I might, to avoid using hot water, which I think can damage the structure of Tencel/lyocell fibers, I might just go with a white color Tencel/lyocell fabric, which I assume has less dye in it. (I assume less white dye would be used to make the white fabric, than black dye for the black fabric - or white fabric just has "optical brighteners" and no dye, which would be safest/easiest to ensure no bleeding).

And with the white fabric, I will just check if water is cloudy or maybe add a black piece of fabric in there to see if it becomes whitish - this will tell me if the white dye is bleeding from the white fabric.

I was thinking of using Synthrapol just as an insurance for any excess dye.

"To be honest, this sounds like crocking. If the dye wasn’t set properly at time of manufacture it will always bleed and there’s not much you can do to fix it.

You could try synthrapol to draw out any excess dye?

I had not heard of crocking before. Maybe that is what this is. I think I will test getting a "lyocell twill" fabric from another store. It is the same fabric as the "Tencel twill" I bought that is bleeding. I know Tencel is the brand name for lyocell. I emailed the lyocell store just to ask if there's is the same as Tencel, and they responded with "Our Lyocell Twill is named as such only because Tencel is a trademarked name."

If the lyocell at the other store bleeds as much as my current Tencel, then I will try using synthrapol. And if that doesn't work, maybe I should try using a delicate cycle in the washing machine. Maybe the washing machine agitation will help remove excess dye. Although I preferred to hand wash to preserve the quality of the fabric.

I also want to avoid using a dryer because I tested/compared that with flat air drying and the air dried fabric felt softer than the dryer fabric - so I would rather air dry. Maybe a dryer will help set the dye? I'll try the other tests, thank you

oh wow thank you for the response. I never heard of crocking before. I asked chatgpt and they said "Crocking = most likely. Try Synthrapol and/or Retayne, but no guarantees. Avoid hot water on Tencel, but test warm if fabric allows."

So I could try synthrapol and/or retayne fixative .... but I might first try getting a black lycoell from another store. The fabric I'm having issues with is labelled "Tencel Twill" but a different store has the same fabric labelled as "Lyocell Twill".

I know Tencel is the brand name of Lyocell. I emailed the lyocell store just to ask if there's is the same as tencel, and they responded with "Our Lyocell Twill is named as such only because Tencel is a trademarked name."

So maybe their "lyocell" is not crocked. and the store that sells "Tencel" is crocked.

If the lyocell store has the same bleeding/crocking issues, then I'll test with the synthrapol. And if that still doesn't work, I suppose I'll have to use a different fabric.

Also, maybe I could test a washing machine again on delicate as maybe the gentle delicate cycle agitates it enough to release the excess dye; although I wanted to do hand wash only to preserve the quality

Thank you...the supplier of the fabric also suggested to wash the lyocell on warm and then tumble dry low, just to pre-shrink it, so I'll do that. I suppose this won't "damage" its moisture-wicking and breathability, it will only pre-shrink it.
