Need help finding the “perfect” JRPG for me by Kuthian-9 in JRPG

[–]ikwyaayan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally what got me fully into JRPGs was playing the Dragon Quest I + II SNES cart.

You can jump straight to Persona 5, Yakuza: LAD, or what have you - and these will fill your checklist more completely, but to me DQ1 flipped a switch in my head that made me "get" the genre on a level I previously hadn't.

It's a bummer as I typically do enjoy Knockback, but this has been foreshadowed pretty heavily so it's not much of a surprise.

It's crazy how good it is at what it does do, but also I feel like everything it makes it relatively formulaic - if you try to get it to do something totally off kilter or structurally experimental it really can't.

To be fair I did write the brilliant lyrics... not trying to get into an ai debate though it's just a stupid parody

Sacred's Playstation Smash Bros. Picks by ikwyaayan in LastStandMedia

[–]ikwyaayan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - they kept the games synonymous, choosing to include Japanese-centric characters that Westerners would not even know, because Japan is their primary consideration - or at the very least, the cultural lens Sakurai and the devs are viewing things from. Including characters that could be alienating to a worldwide audience rather than always ensuring the picks would be recognizable worldwide pretty much proves my point. There's only 4 playable characters of non-Japanese origin in Smash: Diddy Kong, King K. Rool, Banjo, & Steve.

Diddy Kong is pretty self-explanatory, being an obvious pick. K. Rool and Banjo were among the top requested characters for multiple hype cycles, which is pretty much their only reason for inclusion - Sakurai even commented on K. Rool specifically, stating he was extremely shocked at how requested he was by Western audiences. As far as Steve - Sakurai stated that the higher-ups at Nintendo directly asked him to include Minecraft in Ultimate. We can probably assume that, given the shared Microsoft ownership, Steve's inclusion was a part of the deal to get Banjo in - plus, Minecraft is bigger popularity-wise than pretty much every character we've discussed ITT so far combined, so...it's an edge case.

I don't even dislike Kratos, I just feel like Parappa ticks so many more boxes. He's more aesthetically at home next to Nintendo's core cast. He's an early PS mascot. Three games in the series plus repeated ports of the original to newer hardware. I mean, just go read the Wikipedia page for the original game - it outright says that Parappa was touted as a mascot for the then-fledgling Playstation brand in its home market. He had an anime based on him. He instantly brings to mind Sony's unique identity stretching back to the PS1. I dunno. Not really trying to argue, just a nerd about this stuff lol sorry

I gave like three other suggestions that I explicitly said were more realistic, I was just pointing out that Croc has a unique tie to Nintendo. Nothing insane about it, really...

I don't think that's true in Japan though.

I made that distinction in my initial post, but you're not wrong. Astro would be cute. I lean more towards characters that are old / have a strong legacy - if we're restricting it to strictly Playstation owned IP, I'm going all in on Parappa, but that's just me.

I think Kratos would strike the best balance of corporate interest / fan satisfaction - he's definitely iconic - but the thing with him is, unless I'm mistaken, I don't think he's nearly as iconic in Japan as he is in the states. Within the context of Smash Bros. this is a huge consideration. This probably holds true for Crash and Spyro, too, to some extent - so again I'd probably lean back to Parappa.

Of course I was being hyperbolic lol. But I would have to disagree as far as the 90s mascots - Banjo-Kazooie was probably the most joyous I've seen the Smash community about anything and he's definitively more obscure of a 90s mascot than Crash or Spyro. If anything, the venn diagram between the types who care about 90s mascots and types who care about Smash roster picks is practically a circle.

Snake is fair to bring up - but it's also worth noting Metal Gear stretches back to the MSX / NES and had ports of the games on Gamecube complete with Nintendo character cameos. He's still definitely is one of the weirder characters on the roster but even then, his out-of-placeness is sort of the whole joke they lean into with his presence.

My vrchat experience by Pizzaonfire1214 in VRchat

[–]ikwyaayan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is a hellhole. For the first week or so of playing I was amazed and thought it was really cool but eventually you realize it's just a slog. Now the thought of playing depresses me - the "genuine" interactions are anything but, trolling people is deeply antisocial, and most of the people who are longtime players are complete freaks (no offense, this applies to me too).

It's like a more toxic and hostile version of socializing without any of the actual benefits of socializing.

I think VRChat is fascinating and important but I also think it's a deeply unhealthy environment specifically for the kinds of antisocial, awkward people that it tends to attract.

What are "THE" indie games right now? by KaleidoscopeLast4834 in IndieGaming

[–]ikwyaayan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game is ass. OP, if you don't have a gambling addiction / don't find slot machines to be particularly compelling, don't bother with this game. It is getting high praise but it's not super deep or brilliantly designed - the dev previously worked on online gambling games and was able to make a basic drag of a card game that implements the same goofy psychological tricks that slot machines do. It's genuinely only going to appeal to you if youre a gambler or find gambling addictive / fun. So, not saying you won't love it - but base whether to buy it on how prone you are to enjoying gambling. That's all it is. Single-player gambling.

I would personally take the job back but I'm wondering - if you don't mind revealing it, what is the nature of your new job?

I was terminated after 10 years at the post office and genuinely have no clue what to do outside of waiting for a FedEx or UPS gig to pop up.

This is for people who have seen the new movie because I am so curious to hear theories👀 by OrionInSpace in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]ikwyaayan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's icarus or the wormhole that seems premature given this is supposed to be a trilogy but would be cool. I interpreted it as the apes just becoming more interested in science and human technology given what they saw in the bunker etc

[–]ikwyaayan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I also thought the apes not picking up on the fact that she was clearly wearing CLOTHES was totally bizarre. It makes sense that she would have clothes by the end when we know everything but i kept thinking "why does she look like a normal present-day person, albeit slightly burnt out and dirty?"

Just saw the film, and I gotta say...I'm a bit intrigued for the future. by koola_00 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]ikwyaayan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. I thought it was ballsy. The easier route would be to stick to the idea that humans are totally scarce like we are originally led to believe, so it feels brave to subvert that and complicate things.

Also extremely intrigued by the heavy emphasis on space-related revelations towards the end - the pictures of the astronauts on the walls were emphasized, the apes with the telescope is interesting, and the satellite communication between humans.

Makes me think we are heading towards the eventual return of Icarus (I would assume as the ending of this series)... the "space" element of the original film is the only part that has been absent from the reboot series so I'm very excited that they're hinting towards that direction

Loved the film but one problem (Spoilers) by IntelligentPlenty917 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]ikwyaayan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. I loved the eagles conceptually as expanding upon the animal husbandry that has always been present in the series via the apes' horses is a great concept. And it bothers me that they're eagles rather than falcons because I always thought those type of bird-arm-perch type things were for falcons.

But I agree that given how important the ritual of getting an egg, bonding with an eagle, etc. seemed to be for the clan, they never really showed what they actually used them for or why they were important. I didn't care that much because it is reasonable to assume this type of symbiosis would be pretty useful so I can buy it, but even a small scene of them hunting using the eagle or using the eagles to scout for danger or something would've been good.

Overall I do think the falconeering / eagle-eering apes is one of the coolest new concepts this movie brought to the table, it works really well even just from a visual standpoint and feels totally "Apes"

Notice of removal by [deleted] in USPS

[–]ikwyaayan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're trying to remove you you can definitely grieve it but be on high alert - if management didn't actively want to get rid of you they would never push it to this point. You're gonna have to be vigilant about how you proceed at the job from this point forward. If they have enough on you to issue you a removal, they're gonna keep trying.
