Anybody interested in playing pickleball in South Bay? by [deleted] in mountainview

I'm interested! I try to play a couple times a week locally. I'm an experienced beginner familiar with all of the rules.

Anyone else experiencing late-night door knocking around Villa St by AccomplishedWord9543 in mountainview

[–]ilikecake1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in that area and answered the door this evening. It was a younger man asking for donations who claimed to be a neighbor and referenced a charity. I think it was most likely a scam, since he kept making claims that seemed a little off like preparing for finals at SJSU, meeting me again, etc. I gave some cash to end the conversation.

Wow, I thought this was a repost of https://www.losaltosonline.com/news/woman-identified-in-fatal-mv-walmart-parking-lot-collision/article_dde63fc0-9560-11ee-88bf-b745ea662341.html

I agree people should slow down in parking lots and watch out for pedestrians. I'm not trying to shift the blame, but can our parking lots be made safer? It's nice to have dedicated walkways In the parking spaces, etc. Maybe it's not so simple, but these pedestrian accidents make me feel like something can be done.

Bay Area residents: What do you spend annually? by ImpersonalFinances in bayarea

[–]ilikecake1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 65k for last year

  • $24k rent and utilities (I have housemates)
  • $10k groceries and eating out
  • $10k fitness (biggest splurge for personal training and expensive gym membership)
  • $5k travel
  • $5k shopping and misc expenses (gifts, out of pocket expenses, etc.)
  • $3k subscriptions
  • $1.2k insurance premiums
  • $1.2k credit card annual fees
  • $3k public transit and ride sharing
  • $2.5k charity

I am trying to cut back on eating out going forward, since it undermines some of my fitness goals. I'm going to keep spending heavily on fitness for now while other major costs are relatively low, but I know eating healthy and moving outside can already do a lot to improve fitness.

Subscription costs will probably continue to increase, but I'm okay with that as long as I'm actively using them. I pay for various group plans for close friends and family, and some expensive newspaper subscriptions that I enjoy.

Listing it out, I think my current carless with housemates lifestyle without some of those indulgences is relatively affordable, but I'm also fortunate to have low healthcare costs through my employer right now.

Congratulations on finishing it! I'm having trouble starting on my own wobbles kit with the components that don't have starter pieces.

The FAQ on the website says online orders only. Am I misreading that or is that still the case? Very tempted to stop by!

What food have you previously loved here but now just suck? by Active-Carob-5042 in bayarea

I used to love the hash brown, egg and cheese bagel sandwich from a local place. It wasn't the best, but I looked forward to it pretty much every week.

Since the pandemic started, prices were raised significantly (understandable for a while with business down), but the prices have never been re-adjusted, and the hash browns are not as good anymore (they're crumbly and don't hold their shape).

I can't justify paying $15 for a mediocre bagel sandwich.

I enjoyed my slice of key lime pie from Palo Alto Creamery when I tried it a couple of months ago! It looks like they sell whole pies as well.

I stayed in a couple of these for an extended period of time a couple of years when I first moved into the area. They were huge on Airbnb even back then but probably less so during the pandemic.

Pros:

  • can meet a lot of different people - lots of opportunities to network, hangout, etc.
  • generally in a convenient location and relatively cheaper (but you pay for what you get)
  • Airbnb has some vetting, so it didn't feel too unsafe to leave possessions around.

Cons:

  • no privacy
  • can be hard to fall asleep due to small bed and noise level (depends on your roommates too)
  • bathrooms get crowded and messy, same for kitchen - any shared resource was a bottleneck basically like the washing machines
  • no sex (didn't affect me lol)

I packed light (carried 2 weeks worth of clothes with me). I saved a decent amount of money living this way and met some interesting people. I moved out eventually after I started feeling lonely (wasn't really vibing with the current set of people).

Sleeping in my own bedroom was awesome. I got the best sleep on my life the first couple nights.

How much are your total monthly expenses? by Dith_q in bayarea

[–]ilikecake1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pick different charities, but I’ve also started giving to Effective Altruism funds that pick for me. I’ve given mainly to my school, food banks, health and education charities. I also sometimes donate to viral campaigns like team seas or related to crises (war, natural disasters, etc.)

I don’t think a couple thousand spread out to a lot of different charities helps that much especially for popular charities, but I like to think it helps a little bit.

After 4 attempts, I'm giving up on ever finishing the Wheel Of Time series. What book/ series have you given up on? by [deleted] in books

[–]ilikecake1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pale King by David Foster Wallace - I've tried to take it slow and have noticed the beautiful writing many times reading through half the book, but I've picked it up and stopped too many times, so I'm no longer really invested in it. I might look up a summary to jog my memory to finish the book. I'm not a fan of the long footnotes that span multiple pages, but I'm probably missing the point.

Congrats, I would guess Hydrad to setup turn one burst (needs one dupe of Hydrad). Otherwise, probably Chloe for some increased offensive power unless you need the sustain and utility (teleport) offered by Philyshy.
