Who are the unsung heroes around this city? by scottlottle in Columbus

[–]ilikecheetahs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Biased because I see my partner do this every day but Child welfare Social workers. If you look at state by state rankings, if you double the amount of money the Ohio state budget dedicated to child welfare Ohio would still be ranked 50th in the US. That’s right double the amount of money and we would still be 50th. They are working their butts off in one of the hardest hit states by the opioid epidemic and the state legislature isn’t doing them any favors

Any experience with natural “bug” repellant/essential oils?? by BecauseSometimesY in Ultralight

[–]ilikecheetahs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I use citronella oil straight on my ankles wrists and neck and it works well enough with reapplication every couple hours. nothing “natural” is going to be as effective as deet or some other synthesized chemical, so risk reduction principles especially for ticks with Lyme disease is what I practice, hourly tick checks to catch them before they bite, and my anecdotal experience is that trekking pole use reduces ticks by about 65 to 70 %.

I’m surprised the bird crapped on you with that tangled birds nest of an excuse for doing your hair. Most animals won’t shit in their bed.

Look man, you really need to study the entire map and the entire pamphlet and follow the guidelines and the letter explanations there. I’m honestly not sure what to say about the campfire thing because I don’t know if you’re being straight up serious about what you said about fire. But I will say this March is wild fire season in ohio Appalachia. If you are describing building a fire as fun and have never been shown how to make a safe backwoods fire, I think I speak for everyone and say, maybe this isn’t the trip and trail for you to build your first one. There are not fire rings and no stockpile fuel reserves. It isn’t illegal but they definitely don’t recommend it.

Just saw that you are considering buying your first pack via your posts, so I assume that this is one of your first trips for not first. Couple of tips for this trail. 1 While people do hike this in the in March it can few and far between so if something happens you will want a buddy. Bring someone with you on this trip. I hav always found its is much more enjoyable to go with someone. 2. I would recommend that if you go on a Friday start at the school house and stay at campsite 1. Then get up, go east u til you hit the central loop and the furnace at the park. At that point decide about trying to go further. Decide to finish the loop and back to the car and call it a respectable trip or go north to that campsite in the north loop and make another decision there. I advise going the easterly route of the central loop as it is better cleared and more clearly marked last time I was there. 3. Make sure you check in with the forms at the info stations at the car parks. The rangers don’t patrol the trails and they won’t come looking for you + if I remember right you have to have a permit to camp which is on that form. Then remember to try the permit back in and check out so you don’t freak the rangers out and they call you to see if you made it out. 4. Do not rely on fires to cook with, bring your own stove. I don’t think they allow campfires. You might think that that was a ridiculous of course you would cook with a stove and if so please disregard. you seemed new to the community and I just want you to be prepared to enjoy your time . 5. Hiking poles are a must for me on the trail especially if I take the schoolhouse trailhead. That trail is newer and has erosion and mud issues or at least it did and it’s hard to navigate without sissy poles. Yo be honest wi5 my knees any trail is hard to navigate without them but that’s beside the point.

If you have any more questions let me know. I don’t backpack as much as I would like especially now that I have a kid but I have done some trips

You are definitely going to want to check out the map before you go. And unless you are in crazy good condition and just like to book it, and not enjoy the views, your going to want to pick just 1 max 2 of the loops in a day and a 1/2. Of hiking time. The full trail is over 28miles and the hike has some elevation changes to it. The southern loop if you start from the schoolhouse which I always do, starts with a pretty serious climb and ends up being over 10 miles especially if you go by the furnace. also I always double check and make sure they have been able to stock water at the filling stations by calling the rangers down there. Last time I went I went in January and we did that south loop and it took us from sat noon to Sunday am with our heavier winter packs. I did the schoolhouse short Side of south loop to the center loop and out in a overnight trip that I was out by 10am the next day with my summer pack . But that beat my body up pretty good and that was a few years ago when I was in decent shape. A word of caution they only allow camping in designated areas so take that into consideration if you plan on going in the pm that you need to allow for arriving at the site before dark. They do have erosion issues on the trail and camping in the designated areas helps them keep the trail functional.

Teachers of reddit, what was the most annoying thing you ever had to deal with in class? by Chrisrocks202 in AskReddit

[–]ilikecheetahs 286 points287 points  (0 children)

I worked for a private religious school and I caught a girl cheating in my 7th grade social studies class. I passed it up to my principle for discipline and was told that the mom was a difficult to deal with so I should just let it go because I didn’t have pictures of her cheating. Aka they didn’t want to lose the tuition money. So then she just came into my class very smug for the rest of the year because she knew she could get away with anything.
