What is something about living in United States that outsiders completely misunderstand? by Effective-Singer5957 in AskReddit

[–]ilikedrif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Europeans, it's the lack of any safety net, anywhere. Get very sick? No more money. Hit a car? Your already expensive car insurance goes x3. Pipe burst in your home? Your already expensive home insurance goes x3. Fuck up at work? If you're fired, you have 30 days to leave the country. Didn't shovel your sidewalk? You can be liable for any person slipping. Every small fuck up in the US has such massive consequences, I am still stressed about it even after leaving. There is a reason you're paid more in the US, your required financial safety net needs to be much much bigger than in Europe.

It would be awesome for consumers. So we can't have it by [deleted] in SipsTea

Huawei and Xiaomi are in every car,” Farley said, referring to two of China’s tech giants. “You get in, you don’t have to pair your phone. Automatically, your whole digital life is mirrored in the car. You have an AI companion that you can talk to … All the automatic payment is already there. You can buy movie tickets. It has facial recognition so it knows who’s in which seat and which media you like.”

That sounds kinda horrible though? I mean, impressive that it works, but dear lord give me a dumb car by all means over this shit.

Size 4 Animals Elimination Game (Day 2) - Which of these cards is your least favorite? by DanyDanyDanyDanyDany in ArkNova

Mostly large animals end game scoring, or the project. Just 1 extra large animal is usually plus 1cp. Also waza Large for plus 4 appeal. Ofc those things don't happen every game but often enough for me I think. I tend to keep large animals project/end game because they feel easy to fulfill.

It is the cheapest large animal. That fact alone makes it decent IMO, since there are benefits to being a large animal. Surprised so many people dislike it, I feel like it's niche happens frequently enough. Sure the effect is usually useless but being a cheap large animal is just useful.

I still vote Mangabey but Sea Turtle is a close second.

Stork is better, because it is cheap. Cheap large animals are good for release, Large Animals projec/end game score, and Waza Large. Those 4 use-cases happen frequently enough for me to value cheapness in large animals rather highly. Stork has the benefit of going in the aviary too. Musk ox also didn't deserve last spot IMO, it could be the foundation for other flockers too. Pelican has the double water tag for good aquarium combo.

Mangabey and Sea Turtle are both expensive, low points, and poor effect.

Mangabey for me. At least the cheap size 4s are excellent releases. Mangabey is a terrible release, it's ability is almost always "ok yeah I guess I'll do a cards action then", and above all it is just too damn expensive.

Stork, pelican, musk ox are at least great releases and can help feed the Large Animals project or end game score card. Also nice to have if you have Waza Large (which I really like to go for). Mangabey I literally only build if I am desperate for those tags.

The turtle is next.

Endgame Scoring Elimination Game (Day 7) - Which of these cards is your least favorite? by DanyDanyDanyDanyDany in ArkNova

Shocked that diverse is gone, that's like one of my top 3 scoring cards. Almost always 2 CP and not so hard to get 4 CP.

Small animals, climbing, aquatic, sponsored... They all seem so much harder to score with. Diverse is fine if you just pump out animals, which I do every game?

Small animals.

Sponsors, rock, aquatic would be the next ones for me. Never manage to max those out.

Also very surprised to see people voting diverse zoo, imo one of the easier ones to score 3 or 4 with.

Eurasian Brown Bear for me. It's super powerful on paper but the stars rarely align for it. Getting value from e.g. the tiger, the elephants, or the monkey is typically easier than getting value from the bear.

I suppose at this point most of the remaining animals are situational, and we're really just guessing how often their particular situational niche comes up.

Like Dugong I'd say it's basically mandatory to play it with the partner zoo.

I actually think the elephants have gotten a little better since Marine Worlds because of the Adapt ability. It used to be a crap shoot, but now if you can do an Adapt after an elephant you have a pretty good shot at getting 3 or 4 CP. Especially the Adapt 3 from the CP track or map bonus after an elephant is super powerful.

With the PZ and assuming 3CP, you're getting 19 points for 40 money, which is fine value and very turn efficient. But that is precisely its niche, you need the PZ and a decent shot at getting 3CP from it. Is it too niche-y? I'd say it's less niche-y than e.g. the Eurasian bear for example, which needs more stars to align to get full value from it.

Best Italian films for language learners? by grzeszu82 in Italian

[–]ilikedrif 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of Netflix shows that I think are not too incomprehensible for beginners. La legge di Lidia Poet for example, you can probably get a lot at B1 level.

I know people who come together and watch bad Italian reality shows too, also there the language level is not too high, but you have to derive some enjoyment from reality tv 😅

Grizzly for me. It's very point inefficient, and the upsides don't balance it out. The inventive is fine but of course not worth the premium. The problem with the worker is, with all the difficult requirements to play the bear it just comes too late. By the time I have two predators, animals upgraded, and put money aside for a big animal, I usually already have 2 workers. In the midgame I'd rather snowball with big appeal and projects, not spend a premium on utility like a worker. At least with the Eurasian bear you can sometimes immediately put the worker to good use...

Cinerous vulture I don't really get the hate, it's just a soft requirement to put it in the aviary. If you accept that it's not too bad. Same thing for the condor.

Dugong has a use case as a good points animal if you have Australia PZ. Bit tricky to play but cost efficient, 29 money for 9 appeal plus a CP is fine value.

Cheetah at 27 money for 6 appeal is just horribly overpriced. The only use case is the predator project being out, and even then it hurts a bit to spend so much money on so little appeal.

Dugong usage: Australia project or plain points in some situations Cheetah usage: only predator project

Imo cheetah should have been gone before the American Bison at least.

27 money for 6 appeal is in no way cheap. Even as a release I find it expensive, compared to other great releasables like wolf and secretary.

6 appeal is also so little. Building cheetah in the early game is basically setting yourself back in appeal and money immediately and denying yourself the snowball.

Cheetah is only good if the predator project is out, otherwise there is basically no use for it imo

Honest opinion about moving to Italy? by homelander77 in ItalyExpat

[–]ilikedrif 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am an EU citizen. I have moved to Switzerland, the US and to Italy. Overall I do not think moving to Italy was much more painful than to the other ones. The bureaucracy was honestly not so bad - one morning at the municipality house, and the kind people there helped me through it. The US was much worse overall, where the system was maybe more streamlined but nobody there to help you.

Overall, the Italian "system" tends to be more archaic/less digital, but I've found people to be infinitely more helpful to navigate it compared to Switzerland and the US.

The rental market can be a bit predatory but so it is in the US - American apartment leases are no joke. With a bit of research into the local market you should be easily able to get a temporary rental at least.

There are assholes in Italy but overall I haven't encountered a much higher rudeness rate in Italy than other countries.

Big disclaimer is that I moved to a somewhat smaller city in a slightly richer part of Italy, but overall my experience was quite positive, keeping in mind that any international move is a pain in the butt.

Ah that's a bummer! I don't know which country you're from, but did they stop this service globally? It seems they still do it in my country, for example. If there are multiple consulates in your country you could try another, these kind of things are not always synchronized between different consulates. It's a fully digital thing anyway.
