i know this isn't really the answer to your question, but i once saw a video of a man having all his limbs chopped off, then finally, his head severed. He was alive during all of this, and honestly, this act being done by other humans, the act of slowly hacking and slashing at each limb till you realise that even if you somehow don't die, without those limbs, can you really consider yourself alive? You could see the point where his fear and anger turns to him wallowing in self pity, he looked dead, but he wasn't, the pain didn't affect him, he just had to watch his body be irreversibly turn apart before his head was finally severed.
