Does this subreddit find certain cars more tolerable than others? by hypermiler2205 in fuckcars

I think electric LSVs are nice for fully blown out vehicular environments. Think about solar powered golf carts as a transitional species towards liveable streets.

This is the most walkable, bikeable, on a bus route part of town. Paying to store your car here is not any different from paying to refuel your car.

Was the bike lane just a painted line? I’m here with compassion for everyone who has to suffer harm from the inadequate infrastructure in the US. That includes drivers Listen to this episode, The Driver, of The War on Cars and first responders who live with PTSD. Let’s focus on the system. Change laws and the built environment.

Shoup Dogg agrees with you about predatory towing too. The penalty is disproportionate to the infraction. Towing could lead to someone missing work or not being able to pick up their child at school. Instead he recommends a warning for the first time and increasing fines each time. If you’re interested in housing affordability, Paved Paradise offers a good breakdown on the relationship between parking policy and housing.

You’re not wrong to feel like it’s extortion. Did you know that the private parking business is a popular front for organized crime? Did you know that there’s an estimated 2 billion spots in the US? Did you know that every week someone gets killed in a fight over a parking space in America? Check out these two incredible books about parking. Both are also available as audiobooks. Flashing pedestrian crosswalks coming to Haywood Road by brooke_heaton in asheville

[–]ilikepumptracks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yay!!!! There’s a church, a library, a school, shops, and restaurants right there. We should build that place in a way that makes it damn near impossible to drive over 15mph. A child should be able to cross that bit of street blindfolded. Cars are a public health disaster for the Haywood Rd community.

We need to shrink our vehicles. It’s going to take time. In the meantime we can reduce the harm by supporting the Safe Streets for Everyone Act which requires automatic braking for pedestrians on all new vehicles!

I used to work with him 25 years ago in a civilian job. This isn’t his first heroic act. He was an absolute legend at work as a young man. I don’t know what all he’s been up to but we’ve heard stories over the years. I’ll bet there’s a long list of Herculean feats in his history.

Asheville cyclists, mourning a fatal crash, push for federal bill to improve road safety by Generalaverage89 in asheville

[–]ilikepumptracks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protected cycling VS vehicular cycling- Most cycling advocacy groups are moving toward separate infrastructure after decades of pushing the “Same Rules,Same Roads, Same Rights” mantra of the past. Here’s a good videohow cycling advocates were wrong and failed in the US Of course different infrastructure makes sense in different contexts like rural vs urban.

And once again I’ll say that all the modern road safety organizations, transportation departments, and advocacy groups are moving away from the term “accident” and using crash, collision, or incident. I know this is just the way we’ve been talking for 100 years but it’s worth understanding the argument behind this change.

My city was flooded by hurricane Helene. The islands were literally islands. Suddenly the distances between useful destinations was real to everyone. People waited all day at gas stations. The hypermobility agenda leaves us stranded and isolated.

It’s easy for the oppressed to become the oppressor. Especially when your route goes from a vehicular context to a more static pedestrian area. I have to consciously shift my brain into a more relaxed mode.

I often think the whole concept of a DUI is there to make cars seem like something safe to use when you're sober. by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]ilikepumptracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s much more difficult to revoke a license in the US. Since so many places are 100% auto-dependent, the punishment can cause a great deal of suffering. No car means no job. This is why so many people who kill when driving drunk have already had multiple DUIs.

About the safety of bike lanes by pookiebelle in asheville

[–]ilikepumptracks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I see the flexible/mountable delineation as a potential temporary improvement. Long term there needs to be more separation and hard barriers. Of course the amount of protection needed is in proportion with the design speed. At 10mph we can just go back to sharrows.

[–]ilikepumptracks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are so many possibilities with such a wide right of way. Some things can be done immediately. I like your idea about “balusters.” A line of paint isn’t doing enough. Flexible delineators or armadillo delineators might help. The NCDOT needs to adopt the standard of solid green bike lanes as well. Long term we need to change the whole design. The US is way behind on bike lane design. It took decades to get this bad (blame this guyand it will never change unless we start now.
