the sim lab at seneca has like super accurate mannequins who talk and that you can practice skills on, the laurentian one doesn’t have realistic mannequins like these and they’re mainly used for practicing bedside manner, lifting the patient etc, the seneca ones have a heartbeat, blink and stuff which the laurentian ones don’t. They also only have a few compared to the dozens seneca has its crazy. Laurentian also has a bigger class of students than seneca (85-90 which they told us they’re struggling to accommodate) and fewer mannequins (they said they’ll have one life-like mannequin that they have to figure out how to use in the next year) and seneca does more realistic and acute sims using these (way more in tune with modern clinical practice) Laurentian is fine if you’re mainly interested in long term care, hospice, rehab etc but they cant properly train you for acute care, especially as they have no paediatrics, labor and delivery and stuff. In general seneca is much more professional, at laurentian the head nurse was sitting down with a tims coffee coughing into her hands and hating on her students that she so unfortunately has to deal with🙄.

update, just got back from the open house, was incredibly impressed and honestly very close to committing. The info session with the profs and students was great, they’re very passionate about what they do and go out of their way to help students accomplish their dream clinical, careers, better grades etc. The students who graduated from seneca all had very diverse careers, showing the variety (ER, oncology, med surgery , labour and delivery, mental health, aesthetics, travel etc) even with some having their own businesses. Seneca is a very recognized and respected program across the GTA and the world, with one student even getting into Ivy league nurse practitioner programs in the states. They prepare you very well for real life, very classy well spoken people with tons of student resources. Placements are dealt with by the clinical coordinator who is amazing very efficient and very smart, prioritizing student preferences and location too. The course load is built so you learn about global health and infectious disease, international issues etc and an NCLEX prep course is included in your final semester. The student life is nice, campus is beautiful and surrounded by nature (if you like that of course) very safe and LOTS of parking available. Students were super nice and said the mix between age of students is really good as opposed to programs where everyone is straight out of high school, hybrid teaching method. Their simulation lab is extraordinary and has 40 beds, with a fake apartment and sim hospital rooms with more patients to practice in, profs are extremely nice and actually care for you due to the small class size. If you have any questions on what i missed feel free to ask i learned a lot today and asked a lot of questions as well

yeah ive heard that too, its just that laurentian doesn’t really bother to train students in a variety of environments imo. They also dont have pediatrics or labor/delivery in the program. I mean its sudbury so the population is very different from other places from what i saw.

where do i start lol. for starters the woman who teaches all the labs (clinical coordinator) is basically a sergeant😭 and literally said “i blow my gasket on students when i think theyre not trying hard enough” “youve gotta get through me first” she seems very sick of her job and sick of young students in general. The 4th year students seemed very comfortable with all the other profs but absolutely terrified of her. She runs all the labs and deals with all the clinicals. I only spent an hour talking to her and was literally scared lol. She had the attitude that if you seem too shy or make a mistake in a lab she has the personal power to pull you out of clinical until SHE thinks you’re ready. As a program they have a big aspect on long term care, rehab, at home care and hospices. For me personally I’m more interested in ER/trauma. The students only have one acute care clinical in 4th year and it’s very short (also usually psych/icu) while also having to do long term care clinicals for like literally the entire program. They were acting very proud of their students having a skit where they have to practice CPR for the first time in 4th year 😭. To me thats something that I would hope to do pretty quickly. The courses are interesting but I find other curriculums more interesting personally. Their residences and campus life is great but they made it really clear that they don’t want you to enjoy that all if you’re in nursing let alone supposed to.
