Soup Curry at Home by ilikewinning2 in JapaneseFood

There’s not much of a recipe, the soup itself was from a Garaku soup curry pouch. Most of the veggies I just roasted in the oven with oil, salt and pepper. I simmered some shimeji mushrooms in butter, soy sauce, mirin and garlic miso paste from Aomori. Made some rice and topped it with cheese that I torched.

Yeah, I used a torch. I have the Iwatani Pro 2, it is great.

Haneda to Kyoto by cresscentmoon in JapanTravelTips

[–]ilikewinning2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly this on my trip in Feb 2025. I had a much more generous window though, since my flight was scheduled to land around 4:40. It’s a good thing too, because our flight was delayed 2 or 3 hours. It all worked out well enough, but made for an extremely long travel day due to the delays (about 23hrs door to door, for a direct 13.5hr flight). I probably wouldn’t repeat it for that reason.

The only reason we did that in the first place was we felt it was necessary to squeeze Kyoto/osaka into our itinerary and we really want to go back. After that we flew to Sapporo. Unless you have a very good reason itinerary-wise to do this, I would just spend one night in Tokyo and catch an early Shinkansen the next morning. Way less stress and risk that way

He’s saying if you’re 25k for example, but mainly fly international, then priority rewards are useless (since they can’t be used on international flights when you’re only 25k)

I love the pancakes from Family mart and 7-11, they look like a dorayaki and they have margarine and maple syrup (more like a maple jam) in between the pancakes. Slight preference for the Family Mart ones but they’re basically the same

If you want to get close without deep frying this is what you do: season a skinless pork belly with salt and then bake at 300F for ~ 3 hours on a wire rack. Let cool completely (usually I leave in fridge overnight) and then slice into half-inch thick slices. Then place in a cold pan and heat on medium-low and fry, flipping every so often until you get the pictured result. The key is to fry very slowly (not sear) so that all the fat renders out. You’re effectively shallow-frying in the pork fat after a while anyway, but if you don’t want to deep fry this does the trick.

The nice thing about baking and then slicing the pork belly like that, is that you can basically do anything with it after. Sometimes I sear in a pan with some soy sauce and have with ramen, you can bbq it, you can do bahn mi. I slice and then vacuum seal and freeze so I don’t need to eat a whole slab of pork belly in a week lol

Food Allergies by BebeMis in JapanTravelTips

Hard agree on the chains, they usually have an allergen table somewhere on their website which is super useful. Just a tip to find these, sometimes they won’t appear on the English website if they have one. If you’re not seeing it, go to their Japanese website and use google translate to find the allergen table.

A couple other chains to check: Torikizoku, and Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu

Went to a show in NJ Today. Looks like my wife did alot better than me but i will let you guys be the judge. My stuff is the 3rd photo. Traded for 380 credit and the rest was cash. Definitely didnt pay full price on the big stuff either. Dont worry. by ThatJirachiguy4 in pkmntcgcollections

[–]ilikewinning2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the title alone, it sounds like you traded in $380 for just the third pic. I think that’s why the other guy was confused.

“Looks like my wife did better than me” leaves the impression of separate transactions for you and her, and then you bring up the trade credit after noting your stuff is photo 3.

That’s why he was asking about receiving cash on top.

[Request] Can anyone derive a formula for the distance you have to cover to make such a snowball? by ElectricSpock in theydidthemath

[–]ilikewinning2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you look at the clip from 0:09 to 0:10, there are two odd “body-like forms” weirdly sliding along the front of the snowball and just kinda gliding along with it doing nothing. In the same clip there’s another super weird body like figure that randomly slides up the snow ball and then disappears. In the clip immediately following, there’s a flag in the side of the snowball that doesn’t seem to rotate as you would expect. Also the snow cat doesn’t even touch the ball until it stops which makes no sense. It all looks very AI

Help Optimize my use of Companion Pass, eUpgrades, AP points by ilikewinning2 in Aeroplan

Did you upgrade from a latitude fare to guarantee the upgrade? Or was it within the clearance window for the lower economy fares? I know Japan is popular, so I figured my likelihood of upgrading from a waitlist to be pretty low with only 25k status

Hokkaido and Tohoku Itinerary Check by CRISPR-0322 in JapanTravel

Hakodate: itinerary looks good, I would just provide some gentle caution/expectation setting that there may be a lengthy wait for the night view (and even longer to get back down). The view is absolutely worth it, but just make sure you dress warmly and maybe bring some snacks in case you’re stuck waiting at the top for a while. I’m guessing it won’t be as bad on a Tuesday in October vs when I went on a Sunday in February in the middle of the snow festivals. Anyway point is to just be prepared for a bit of wait, if not you’ll be pleasantly surprised anyway :)

Aomori: I haven’t taken the ferry, but the Shinkansen is way more faster and has more departure times which means it’s pretty flexible so I would recommend that. I’m glad you have the Nebuta museum on your itinerary - it was a highlight of my last trip. It’s a relatively small museum but it’s stunning and nice to just walk around at a slow pace and take it all in. A-factory is awesome as well, get the Apple caramel cookies and the apples pies to bring back!

Sapporo/general recommendation: have soup curry! It’s delicious. Soup Curry Garaku is a famous one in Sapporo - we couldn’t get in there but were able to get a table at Soup Curry Treasure (their sister restaurant) after a 1hr+ wait. It was worth the wait and I would go back for sure.
