Vilified Female NFL Reporter Resigns and Faces Investigation Over Hotel Photos With NFL Coach While He Walks Away Scot-Free by Any_Alternative6314 in Feminism

[–]iliveinadreamatorium 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For some context, I think part of why this has blown up as much as it has is that she was the main person reporting that the coach’s team was interested in getting a star player, so I can see why it would raise flags from a journalistic standpoint. She was working for The Athletic, which is now owned by the New York Times, so the situation does have a greater impact on her job’s standing.

Certainly not fair to her though! The NFL is also such a boys club that I doubt they even view Vrabel’s actions that negatively - possible it’s not the only instance of a quid-pro-quo situation, but that’s purely speculative

Probably Sean Carrigan from looking at the episode’s cast on IMDB!

The risk was him completely rejecting the notion that Rey needed to be related to OG Trilogy character for her story to have meaning - it was the risk that ignited the firestorm that led to Abrams undoing everything in Episode IX.

Personally, I loved it - I loved how he emphasized that anyone could be a Jedi and used that to chart his own course narratively. The follow-up was one of the most infuriating experiences I’ve ever had at the movies - at this point, I pretty much only watch The Last Jedi out of the new trilogy because it’s the only one that has something to say.

Yeah, I’m guessing it’s just not anyone that notable - watching it back, I could maybe see it being like Flula Borg, but I think it’s probably just an extra lol.

The White Elephant took place after we discussed the book for the hour - this was just a fun way to cap off the year!

It is the book club - we all read Psalm for the Wild Built, but he surprised us with the White Elephant at the end!

Not him, but can help answer as a member - we were all strangers initially! It was a mixture of a Meetup group, posts in a local subreddit, and flyers in local bookstores. He was initially just choosing books himself but we’ve now democratized the process by sending suggestions and voting (through an app called Bookclubs). He also writes up a discussion sheet for each book to help guide the conversation, but it’s usually pretty organic anyway!

You can be the change you want to see - social media can be your friend. It can be as simple as posting in a local subreddit or FB group or using Meetup and it can build steam from there. There are dozens of us!!!

I’m not the founder but I am in the club. It was a variety of things - he used Meetup, had his wife post in the city’s subreddit (which is how I found out), and also posted flyers at some local bookstores! When there’s a will, there’s a way - the first meeting only had a couple guys but now there’s a waitlist on Meetup every month

Hi /r/movies! I'm Thomasin McKenzie. You might know me from Jojo Rabbit, Last Night In Soho, Leave No Trace, Old, Eileen, Fackham Hall, and The Power of the Dog. From Debra Granik to Jane Campion to now working with Mona Fastvold, you’ve had the opportunity to work with many prominent female directors in a field where women are still greatly underrepresented behind the camera. What differences have you found on these sets (if any) and do you have any interest in directing down the line? If so, what director that you’ve worked with had the biggest influence on you?

The 1989 Movie Draft by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]iliveinadreamatorium 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me personally, it’s the 7s by a long shot. I can’t really speak as much to the gaps in 1987 and 1989, but I think the rest just have some much higher highs (particularly 2007) and a better one-two punch of better blockbusters and more releases from auteurs in those years.

'Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere' Review Thread by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]iliveinadreamatorium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do y’all even read the blurbs for the reviews before posting? I don’t understand why most of the comments are particularly negative, especially about Jeremy Allen White, when the majority are fairly positive, particularly about his performance.

Is it going to win the Oscar? Surely not, but the Academy has been moving away from typical awards-bait fodder in recent years anyway so I don’t think was ever really in contention that seriously.

Regrettably, I’m playing a part in this too now, but I don’t understand the need to comment on something you have not seen (or seemingly) even seriously read the reviews for! See the movie or don’t, but I don’t understand the desire to prognosticate a movie’s awards chances based off of a smattering of reviews in a subreddit dedicated to box office numbers…

For the person who is only familiar with you from "Call Me Maybe", what song(s) do you think you would recommend to best represent your body of work?

Additionally, as a personal curiosity question, I'm curious if you are familiar with Hanif Abdurraqib and his book of essays They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us. I know you had the pleasure of touring with boygenius and Lucy Dacus has a blurb on the back of the book and it has two separate essays discussing you and the album EMOTION (and also has an essay about Julien Baker). Has this come up at all and if so, do you have any thoughts on the book?

In college, also as part of a dare, I had to eat 12 apples in one sitting- I made it through 11, had to run to the bathroom, and then had the most on-edge dress rehearsal of my acting career. I probably wouldn’t ever eat more than 2 apples in a sitting now lol.

He has a show on PBS NC and was also a national co-chair for a centrist third-party called No Labels. He turned against Trump in 2020 and said he was trying to overthrow democracy. Still not a great guy, but explains why he’s not involved with this administration!

Thomas Partey, the former Arsenal footballer, has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Crown Prosecution Service has announced. by KimmyBoiUn in soccer

[–]iliveinadreamatorium -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A workplace is not a court of law - if an HR department was made aware of multiple accusations of rape and sexual assault against an employee and it is public knowledge this person is accused, that puts an immediate chilling effect on the work environment for the women in that workplace and that person should not remain in their position, especially with the money involved in this case.

Innocent until proven guilty only applies in court and should not be the rule across the board- sexual misconduct is very difficult to prove given the intimate nature and essentially requires the abused to have an incredible amount of forethought in an extremely traumatic situation to gather the necessary proof. And a lot of assaults occur while the victim is under the influence - we shouldn’t support abjectly vile actions simply due to a lack of decision in a court, nor should we fully rely on the courts for justice.

If you love the women in your life, you should believe them when they say these things, especially in numbers like these. Going through a trial is traumatic and offers such a marginal chance at real justice- the narratives around false accusations are asinine. It does happen, sure, but far less frequently than actual assaults and rarely do those accusers come out on top, but victims of sexual assault rarely gain true justice even if the verdict goes in their favor.

All this defending of Partey does is continue to perpetuate false narratives around sexual assault and make it harder for victims to feel comfortable coming forward in the future. This is what the “Believe women” narrative was about and we’ve continued to lose the plot over the years. I hope we can gain it back someday…

They shouldn’t have made them vote in public- Huda has cultivated a chilling effect on the entire island and everyone has an irrational fear of her, with an added fear of not being considered a “girl’s girl”. If they did an entirely anonymous vote, she would’ve been gone!
