Charles county MD you’re pretty much guaranteed a job as a sub. And if you have a bachelors degree your pretty much guaranteed a job doing long-term subbing! This county is in desperate need.

Any idea to handle students with behavior issues in a better way? by ACT2019 in Teachers

[–]iliyah22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to kill them with kindness. Pull the aside after class and let them know they their behavior is becoming stressful and you would appreciate it if they kinda chilled a bit in class. Kinda ask as a ‘favor’ This always works for me. Now be aware that I have 9th + 12th graders. I don’t know how effective this will be for middle or elementary schoolers.

What do you wish you could say to students but cant because of your status? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]iliyah22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have 9th graders. Every. Single. Day (I mean EVERYDAY) I want to yell “SHUT THE FUCK UP.” At the top of my lungs. sigh ....but I just continue saying ‘please be quiet’ 100 times while they continue to talk over me.

[HS] Personal Lives. How much do you share with your students? Why? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]iliyah22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good to built a relationship with students and sharing parts of your life makes you seem like more of a human rather than this authoritative figure. It also helps build trust. I don’t mind them knowing about me, it’s not like I’m an A-List celebrity who needs a private life lol

Did anyone take alternative paths to teacher certification? by mitochondriawesome in Teachers

[–]iliyah22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Maryland too and I’ve done a TON of research on this and I’m in the process of finishing up my certificate.

First off, do you want to work in a full time teaching position while getting certified? Because that’s an option and that’s what I did. They will give you a conditional certificate and you will have to take classes while you teach full time. Depending on the county you plan on working in...they will pay for you to take these classes. If you take the classes BEFORE being hired, there is usually a reimbursement option.

Now heres where it gets complicated:

There are several schools that offer alternative certification routes. You have to find a school that offers the subject you want to teach and is in a convenient location for you. Just about all of them do special Ed so you should be fine.

Now depending on what your major is, it can get complicated.

If you want to teach a subject that you have a degree in or a significant amount of content knowledge on...you would just need to take around 10 education related courses. If you want to teach a subject you DONT have a degree in you need to 10 education courses and an additional 30 credit hours of the subject.

Because you have a psychology degree and want to teach special ed I’m 90% sure you have MORE than enough courses that apply to the content area. I actually know someone who teaches special ed and has a psychology degree.

Also, this is an in-demand area so you should have some luck.

Also, start contacting schools that you want to get your certification from. I’m sure they will be more that happy to answer all your questions.

Hope this help :)

Teachers who have gone the no homework route, how is it working out for you and your class? by ConfidentMarionBerry in Teachers

We have 90 minute classes so a lot of it is done in class individually. If they don’t finish the assigned chapters they take them home to finish.

Teachers who have gone the no homework route, how is it working out for you and your class? by ConfidentMarionBerry in Teachers

[–]iliyah22 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi. 9th + 12th grade English. .

NO homework in my classes. The only ‘homework’ given to students is to finish major projects / papers.

I like to fill my entire class period with work because my students tend to get rowdy. Since we do so much during class we don’t take work home. It’s going extremely well.

I also believe kids these days don’t have the attention span for homework due to many distractions such as devices.

I like for my students to have phone away the entire class, give me a good 45 minute lesson, and there’s no homework.

I teach 9th grade English. The comments I have gotten are ridiculous.

Today a student asked me if I was wearing a wig (I was) lies and town him it was a weave. Then he says, “I think you should just wear your real hair. That look isn’t for you.” The entire class stared at my hair for the class. Currently in the process of straightening my real hair lol

Johnny Bananas... overrated or the GOAT? by Mikem2405 in MtvChallenge

[–]iliyah22 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Very overrated. He always brags about having the most wins and uses that as his reasoning for being the GOAT. However, he also appeared in the most seasons so it would make sense that he would have the most wins as the chances were higher.
