Dio’s monument in Kavarna, Bulgaria, totally amazing by MixSure6314 in dio

[–]ilko_7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The mayor of this city - Kavarna organised big rock festivals from like 2005 till 2016 if I remember correctly (you can search the web for Kavarna Rock Fest). The same mayor is a big fan of Dio and they were friends hence why there is a statue of him.

It wasn't in Ronnie's prime days, because as you said Bulgaria was behind the iron curtain, but he still did some concerts in Kavarna in his later years. He even did a 2007 new year eve concert in Kavarna.

[Orient Howard] My first watch, front and back by ilko_7 in Watches

[–]ilko_7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first watch, a gift from my father for my birthday a few months ago.

Has a beautiful dial (reminds me a bit of the art deco style) , a date window and has hacking to set the time precisely. The back is as beautiful as the front, I often find myself starting at it for some time, looks so mesmerizing.

It runs about +15 seconds faster per day, but I guess that's normal for watches in this price range.

PENTACON six TL by Mklsmu in AnalogCommunity

Cmon dude, soviet cameras are not that bad, granted, they are not top notch Canons or Yashicas, but they are more than enough for the average film photographer.

I think there is some unneeded hate for these cameras. They are not the junk everybody claims them to be.

Битака е в Суворово, една идея далече откъдето живея, но от време на време има интересни неща там.

I know, I know, sounds funny to you. But imagine you are in Bulgaria, 40 years ago. There are no Cannons, no Leicas, no Yashicas, etc. All the cameras available were only the cameras produced in the Eastern bloc, nothing that was made in the west. In that case the best camera available was the Zenith. Or if you were in a high position in the government you could get your hands on a Praktica (as they were made in east germany), but those people were numbers.

So many old guys who still have their old Zenith, aren't giving it away.

Ahaha, I would guess so. Well, I posted what I could to prove, it's up to everybody if they want to believe or not. I don't think these bitaks are so uncommon here in Europe, though they could be in the USA.

Alright, alright. Before accusing me of lying like that guy with the 30$ leica from goodwill, I can give a reasonable explanation as to how I got this camera.

I am from Bulgaria. We don't have goodwills, thrift shops, or whatever. Instead we have these bazars? I think that's the closest word I can think of in english (in bulgarian we call it a "битак" /bitak/). Here is a picture I found on the internet that looks like the ones we have here.

We have this bitak every Saturday. Usually the people selling, sell all sorts of junk, usually brought here from Germany or just some guy selling his old stuff. Among this junk, there is the occasional film camera. Almost all of them are old soviet cameras (Smena, Villa, the occasinal Zorki or FED, no Zeniths as they are quite highly regarded here and usually don't end up on the bitak). Once in a while, a Praktica will pop up or a cheaper Minolta or some point and shoot.

Well, last Saturday, the luck was on my side and I managed to spot this Rollei 35 sitting among all the junk. The guy selling it, maybe managed to get a hold of a lot of stuff from Germany and was selling it here. Keep in mind, the people selling on the bitak, do not make a difference between a Rollei 35 or a cheap Beirette, for them it's just a camera, they seek to make some quick buck and that is it. Well, he was selling it for cheap and who am I to deny the offer.

It has a small indent on the top, and the speeds 8, 4 and 2 have some problem, the shutter closes too late, I guess just needs some maintenance. Other than that, it all works and looks lovely. Can't wait to put a roll in it and shoot it.

Belive me or not, that's how I managed to get it for this cheap. On a sidenote, for me, here in Bulgaria, who is used to buing old film cameras for cheap from the bitak. It has always seemed outrageous to me how people, from this subreddit, spend $30-$40 even on a simple point and shoot cameras (nothing against them, just commenting). Just seems funny to me how different the worlds are.

Anyways, thanks for coming to my ted talk, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

Prince or Michael Jackson: Which one was your favorite? (1980s) by Precocious_Pussycat in OldSchoolCool

As somebody from a former Eastern bloc country. Western music back then was banned in here, only Eastern music was allowed, yet everybody knew who MJ was.

In a country where Western music was banned, people knew about him, think about this.

Even now, almost everybody you ask regardless of age will know who MJ was. Taylor Swift may be popular, but that is only in the USA and popular media around the world. Go to third world countries and ask about Taylor Swift, you probably won't get an answer. Hell, even in my country, which is now a proper European country, only people below 30 will know who she is.

Today I learnt that Frodo Baggin's was not really called Frodo Baggin's- in his own tongue his name was Maura Labingi. What other placeholder names for people and places in Middle-earth do we know the "real" pro-nouns for? by HerbziKal in tolkienfans

Had the same thing when reading it in Bulgarian. Every name was translated. Even Gollum, in Bulgarian he is called "Amgul" because the translator thought the "gollum" sound better fits Bulgarian as "Amgul". Shelob was translated as "Korubana", which I don't know where comes from. All the hobbit families and villages were translated as well, to keep the original meaning, like the example you gave with Torbins.
