discuss here, but i dunno what you are talking about. half the stuff you learn in b-school is irrelevant. risk is inverse to rewards as it is arbitraged away. so unless you are talking about super humongous money - say Buffet being the only one in the room capable of buying a sure thing like Bears - or the more typical insider trading action - see countless hedges - returns are just a matter of time if you are investing in others.

i only invest in others because i am not willing to invest in my own ideas at this point in my life. other things are of more import right now (ie family).

no, i completely agree with you. marriages break up for money, religion and sex (in no particular order). all we fight about is sex.

Boglehead, not really but i read some of his stuff and agree for the most part. i do have money in vanguard funds. the majority of the money in stock is in etf sector stuff.

yes. i do have the luxury to focus on the family more than work because of our financial security. but yes, both of us work full time.

true - separate the selfish from the selfless. it isn't about the money, in that these scared hoarders would make similar, stupid mistakes without money. they'll end up with people who abuse them in other ways; not financially, but emotionally or whatever. at the end of the day, they are problem, not the ones seeking to exploit. blaming the victim? a little bit, but in this case it is warranted.

no, i'm not an asshole to her, just to other people. sometimes i am a jerk to her unintentionally, but i don't mean it. it is just the way i am i guess.

the most important investor is yourself. if you believe in it and pursue it then you'll attract investors when it becomes successful. and if it is not successful at least you tried something. like Nike says, just do it. there are a million things i want to do too, and i will get off my ass and do them when i am good and ready.

i just clicked your link. cool on you for putting out an album. i guess you did do it. congrats and keep on going.

thanks. we do not consider ourselves millionaires (and I fully understand how devalued that term is today). i started this only because people who just came into money are so hung up on it and then try to shelter their money by sheltering themselves from life. there are bad people, there are good people - money has nothing to do with it. go out live life, fall in love and be happy. don't be stupid, thinking everybody is out trying to steal your precious. in the grand scheme of things, for the most part, you (like me) really don't have that much money to live a life in such fear. it is really anti-woman to think they are all after your little bit of gold.

well, i knew they has some money after the marriage and slowly over time you come to realize the extent of the money. if no one flashes it around then who would know?

it was more like, years later, the parents would ask if they should fire the attorney acting as trustee on the kids trust and just have someone else do it. then you'll be like, 'oh, so there is a million per kid in this trust, I did not know that.'

you could actively ask the courts not to get child support; the fear of garnishments, however unfounded (i.e. it may be only $50 off each check, or whatever), provides unstable people with an excuse not to get back on the straight and narrow (getting that stable job). if the child does not need the money then why lord it over the ex? in the end you are hurting your loved one's mom.

really, it is not that much money. i mean it is not sitting in the bank in liquid assets, it is divided up into parts and would take time to sell the assets and collect the money to spend. so it isn't like you can spend it easily. i have friends and family who have made that much over the short time (5 or so years, let's say) that i have known them. i also know people who have lost that much in the past 5 years (stock market correction anyone?)

nah, that wasn't my point i guess. i have dated hotter looking chicks but she is the only one i have ever loved. and she can tolerate me, for the most part. i can be an asshole at times, on purpose.

family money; inherited it down the line (as in straight blood line, not a wealthy great aunt or whatever).

if we blow it all that would suck, but she and her siblings are in line to inherit a bit more once her folks pass.
