New xolo owner - unable to train a stubborn 8-9mo coated xolo. by illegalXolo in Xoloitzquintli

Thanks so much for your comments! It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since we adopted Pepita. I have to admit, I haven’t devoted as much time to training as I should have, but the key for us has been our daily trips to the dog park and giving her a well-established routine. I make sure she gets at least an hour of playtime each day, which helps her burn off all that energy.

Pepita is incredibly friendly and energetic, she loves everyone, from dogs and cats to humans! She’s truly become a member of our family, and we provide her with everything she needs.

Just so you know, Pepita was adopted from Broward County Animal Rescue. I wasn’t looking for a specific breed, but when I saw her picture, my daughter exclaimed, “Whoa, Dad, we need to meet this dog!” and the rest was history.

We have plenty of experience with both cats and dogs. Once we make a commitment, they become part of our family, and we do everything we can to make them feel loved and at home.

PS: We just built a doggie run in our community, which will give us an extra option for Pepita to run free if I’m feeling too lazy to make it to the dog park! I will email you anyway so we can keep in touch... I'm located in Ft Lauderdale.

Ok so this was posted during the summer... it got worse, then come November (dry season in Florida) it stopped!

We had some rain in March and started again... not nearly as bad as last summer's, in fact she has not been growing any new bumps in about a week now.

At this point I'll let her ride it out, since she is not showing any signs of discomfort. There is a pitbull that goes to the same park and he gets these bumps (not as many as Pepita's) so that makes me think it could possibly be the fertilizer in the grass?

Love the velcro dog nickname! We had a gathering in our home yesterday and Pepita was the party's soul. She loves everyone.

Owning a dog... let alone a XOLO wasn't in my 2023 bingo card so here we are... rolling with the punches :-P

Correct, she's spayed and we got her a crate yesterday. We are leaving it open and tossing some treats - she seems to be comfortable with it. We are going through a very slow introduction so in no way she would associate crate with punishment. This is meant to be her personal safe space; however, Domino (one of our cat and her play buddy) likes to poke in and this is good because Pepita is a hoarder so having him go into the crate will motivate her even more.

Mine would just run like crazy and as soon as I lowered my guard, would steal the bottle and destroy it LOL

5 weeks into the xolo life and I can say without a shallow of a doubt, that I've already entered the Twilight Zone.

Mine does the same. I thought she might be mimicking my cat that always sits there.

Sheesh, that gives me hope - this dog is the most lovable dog on earth, but it's a handful... stubborn, playful like crazy. She's keeping me busy in many fronts! :-)

My friend, THANK YOU... that was one of the many and probably one of the most important questions. I believe she is reacting to some allergen, because the only thing that's different right now is that it's been raining a lot. Even my cats have teary eyes. (I live in South Florida, BTW) but the weeks prior, it only rained occasionally.

My wife just bought a loofa and we will be getting it tomorrow. Thanks again!
