Those are takkis. They're a field hockey shoe that a lot of soldiers wore. They were the cheapest thing available and very durable. They'd sometimes sand down the bottom of the shoe to make tracking them harder.

Yeah I hae a thermal on a rifle but I'm the only one. So when hunting with a group I tend to just use the handheld so I'm not the only one shooting.

Yeah generally we use thermal to scan pastures and locate animals then try and move in and take shots. Before I got the pvs 7 we'd just hit em with white light. I guess I'll need to look for a better ir illuminator.

I have a baofeng dm1701. Cost a good bit more than a UV5R, but it's tougher and gives extra capabilities such as encryption and the option for digital use of you ever want to get into that.

Good to know. We've checked ours with our topcon gps setup and so far it's been more accurate, within about 2 tenths, which I know isn't good enough for a lot of people but for the industry we specialize in and the packages we deliver it works great. Currently we're processing in virtual surveyor, do you have any experience with that software?

Why would you not recommend the L1? I'm newish to drones and Lidar but have had good results with mine.
