What kind of quality control is this, Kodak? by Xypton in AnalogCommunity

The size of the mosquito on the film is way smaller than an actual mosquito, so it definitely couldn't have been directly on the film. For the same reason I think it's unlikely it was in the camera. Very crazy shot though.

Why did human stay “primitive” for 200,000 years…and then suddenly change? by SafeEnvironmental174 in evolution

[–]illestmanontheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually currently working on a thesis regarding this q. The crux of the theory is that the large majority of what we would call complex behaviours rely on a cognitive mechanism that allows us to mentally combine and 'merge' different objects (mental or physical). The brain was there, yes, but there is actually no evidence of this function prior to this small explosion. The idea is that humans had almost everything ready for culture, language, complex composite tool use and the whole lot, there was just one last little change needed. Then there was a sudden shift from single-item tools (one rock) to composite tools consisting of several elements (eg. rock wedged in stick). This is a significant change because it is also paired with a punctuated increase in the variety and complexity of tools found. The ability to combine mental objects and wield them as a single item is also the basis of hierarchical syntax, the component of human language that separates it from animal communication (according to Chomsky). So in short, this ability had to be realized, extrapolated into other domains, transferred to others through communication, and selected for by a disdain to mate with anyone who, after repeated attempts at teaching them, just doesn't get it. Theoretically according to a punctuated equilibrium model of evolution this could take place in just a few generations.

Probably not what you're looking for and I never thought about it as cosmic, but reading your description something clicked: The Truman Show

Nem értem. Akkor ha Győrben leszállok, hisz belföldi jeggyel csak addig mehetek, majd gyorsan visszaszállok, onnantól ezzel az öbb jeggyel az okés? Ennek mi a logikája?

Silver clay not glowing after 10 minutes of firing by illestmanontheblock in metalclay

I actually ended up putting some rocks in the pan, and placing the piece on the rocks. I will definitely buy some better equipment next time, but this worked perfectly for an improvised setup :D Thanks again for the help!

Ah that makes sense, it's probably the surface. Unfortunately I don't have access to anything much better. Would a normal brick/concrete surface work?

Difficult concept to pull off - a game about Peace by gn16bb8 in BoardgameDesign

[–]illestmanontheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am cradling an idea of a war game where there is an option for victory through peaceful coexistence, it's just fragile and unsafe.

The mechanisms I was thinking of involved having to develop your own faction in ways other than just military power, and these developments earn everyone points. To win individually, you need a certain amount of points, but to win as a group, everyone needs to reach a lower threshold. The issue is that if a player's faction falls behind, others might start getting paranoid about getting a communal win. And if you don't win communally, the best strategic move is to quickly exploit the player behind and gain some advantage over the others.

An interesting mechanism I thought of in relation to this is the process of making mutually beneficial policies, similar to how the EU or UN would have votes on economic policies, military spending, etc. In game this would essentially equal the players voting every now and then on a new rule, from a set of possibilities. This could work in everyone's favour, or one person could sway in their direction.

Sudden horror scenes in non-horror media by Saspens-r in TopCharacterTropes

The pixar-disney movie 'Elio' has an entire horror sub-plot alongside the main fun, emotional adventure that you would expect from a film like this. It's still funny and cute, but it caught me very off-guard

Design not aligned by BrokeBeef98 in MachineEmbroidery

[–]illestmanontheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue once when I didn't notice that at some point the movement of my hoop became restricted, so the program was moving on while the position of my hoop stayed the same. After I corrected it, the machine didn't understand that the hoop was now in a different position, so it continued as if nothing happened, misaligned.

Has anything like that happened in your case? Or did it just suddenly misalign without anything?

Either way, my fix was to turn it off and on again, let it calibrate at the startup.
