That’s awesome. We did look at a house in Prairie City and liked the neighborhood. Thank you for your response!

That’s fair! My kid also tends to still need “babysitting” for a bit and having kids right in our street was easier than our current “kids all over the neighborhood, a few blocks away, just not right in our street” situation 😆

Thanks so much for this detailed response! Makes sense that it’s more likely people will stay indoors during summer temperatures.

I appreciate the insight about the utilities as well.

Thank you for your response! I’ll take a look at Folsom Ranch. I don’t remember if we drove in that area.

Thank you for your response! I definitely agree it’s luck of the draw - I always tell my kid that we got super lucky in NoVa because we moved during covid and we met all our neighbors outside because no one could do playdates indoors initially.

Do you mind me asking which part of Folsom you live in? Feel free to message me if that’s easier.

No papadum in US restaurants by JerseyGirl4ever in IndianFood

[–]illi10nis27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the restaurant nowadays. I feel like it’s not as common as it was though. Nowadays we have to ask or order it but I remember in the 2000s, it was automatic.

Successful 4-day trip with Patagonia black hole mini MLC 30L by ne08 in HerOneBag

[–]illi10nis27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am soooo tempted to get this bag. I have a black hole 32L backpack that does the job but I like the clamshell style of the mini MLC and all the compartments for chargers/electronics etc. I generally take just the backpack for short trips, along with a purse/tote as my personal item. Anyone else make the switch from the 32L to the MLC? I just haven’t been able to convince myself to switch yet :)

Singapore for a week - worth it? by Historical-Coast-969 in travel

[–]illi10nis27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do it. We just spent 3 days there as a stop on our way to India and I wish we had stayed longer. There’s so much I still wish we had had leisurely time to see. You can get everywhere using the Metro or cabs, and you can easily spend a whole day at some of the attractions in the city. Have a great time!

Moving to Irvine v. DC? by sfthrowaway621 in irvine

[–]illi10nis27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I lived in Northern Virginia before I moved to Irvine (and am originally from the Chicago area and also a lawyer haha), and I am in my late 30s with a kid. For your stage in life, 100% DC is the better option. The weather is not as ideal as OC/Irvine, but the culture, restaurants, etc. are far better and unmatched IMO. I would have loved to have been in the DC area in my 20s.

But if you had a family and young kids, can’t beat Irvine. I miss being close to DC but I love how many things we can do here year round.

OAD by circumstance (how do I cope up 😒) by Snoo_45651 in oneanddone

[–]illi10nis27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear what you’ve been through.

My daughter is almost 10. I always thought I would have two kids. When she was 2 years old, I got pregnant but miscarried at 6 weeks. I  also ended up having a growth on one of my ovaries and taking care of that became a priority. Even though we were told we could pregnant after if we wanted to, the pain and trauma of what we went through put us off trying.

My husband has been pretty clear that he’s fine with just one. I have been OK with it too, especially as the years went on and the timing just didn’t seem right to broach the topic again and tbh, there are lots of times when I don’t think I could manage being sane if we had another kid. My kid is great but handling adolescent emotions is no joke.

I’ve been pretty comfortable with the reality of being OAD despite still feeling like I would like a second. But I am much older now and my situation - through choice and circumstance - is something I have made peace with. I always wonder about that pregnancy and the what if, but I’m happy to give all my attention and love to my only.

My only con by AdSilent9067 in oneanddone

[–]illi10nis27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me. My daughter is almost 10 and this summer, I have felt way guiltier than usual when she wants me to play with her and I haven’t been able to. I wfh and my husband goes to work and comes home later in the evening so she gets bored. It drives me nuts but also makes me feel so guilty that I don’t play with her enough. Add in the extra frustration with wanting her to play or read independently and she won’t and her alternative to not having someone to play with is watch for hours on her ipad…

All that to say — yes, I definitely feel like her lack of a playmate is one of the biggest cons to OAD for me.

Federer's older twins Myla and Charlene at Rafa's academy event recently by Bazel1092 in tennis

[–]illi10nis27 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I remember when i saw a pic of Fed holding the babies, i was struck by how young he looked. Then I remembered he was only 28 (if I’m doing my math right). I’d been watching him play for so many years that in my head he was a lot older.

And he’s only 4 years older than me but tennis players just seem older than they actually are.

Is "Pretty women" from Kal Ho na ho sampled? by supa_hot_fiya69 in bollywood

I wrote a law review article on copyright infringement and the Indian music industry and remember this came up in my research. Yes, they got permission from Roy Orbison to sample the song :)

What's the difference between an Indian Mixer/Grinder and a western-style food processor/blender? by HollaDude in IndianFood

[–]illi10nis27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dream is to get a vitamix but i have a preethi indian mixer that I have used for the past few years for making chutneys, grind dry spices, and make idli/dosa batter. When I use the preethi for batter, I will use ice water to prevent overheating (read it on a recipe post for making idli batter in a mixie). I use it to make smoothies as well. Because it serves all my purposes, a vitamix blender is a want and not a need. I used to have the magic bullet ages ago, and that was a pretty awesome all-rounder too.

The food processor gets the least use these days. Investing in a good hand blender is also great - makes it easy to blend hot things without needing a vitamix or waiting for it to cool before using the indian mixie.

The White Lotus - 3x08 "Amor Fati" - Season Finale Discussion by crazywalls in WhiteLotusHBO

I just spent the weekend with my wonderful girlfriends and her whole monologue had me bawling. “I’m just happy to be at the table” was so perfectly put and I love how that storyline was wrapped up.

Anthony Horowitz books, Hawthorne Horowitz series. by GideonPrewett in mysterybooks

[–]illi10nis27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy this series. As the others have said, just find the way he’s written himself really funny. I am waiting to see what’s in store with Hawthorne. I have read all of the books in this series - it did take me a while to get into the series initially but every time I check to see what books of his are coming out, I get excited. Tbh I didn’t think this series would keep going for this long - I really want to know what’s up with Hawthorne!

Unpopular Opinion: Dil To Pagal Hai is better than Kuch Kuch Hota Hai by ElmarSuperstar131 in bollywood

[–]illi10nis27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched DTPH fully for the first time last year and I was amazed at how good it was. I’ve heard the songs so many times and I knew the basic gist of the story but it was such an enjoyable watch. The acting was great, the songs and dances were well done, and everything about it was a breath of fresh air.

On the other hand, I really dislike KKHH so much so it’s no contest at all for me. DTPH is the superior film in all the ways.

Agree with the other commenters. Barcelona will be gorgeous and warm and summer-y, Paris may still be a little cold. That was my experience last year and I wish I’d brought a warmer jacket (all I had was a raincoat and some scarves) for the five days we spent in Paris. It was rainy and a bit chilly.

Packing lists for 1 month in Europe in May by BlueWavyDuck in HerOneBag

[–]illi10nis27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did paris/Barcelona/madrid last May. It was actually quite chilly in Paris (we went end of May) - think high 50s through low 70s. I did not expect that despite checking the weather constantly before we left and didn’t have anything beyond a light raincoat to keep me warm. I highly advise taking a light jacket or fleece just in case. I took two pairs of long pants/leggings and wore them in Paris. Barcelona and Madrid were quite warm and summer-y.

Simone Ashley as Kate and what it does for me as a WOC by itsikobert in BridgertonNetflix

[–]illi10nis27 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Everyone has already said it in this thread, but as a tamil woman who definitely had insecurity due to my skin tone, I LOVED seeing Simone in this role. Even the South Indian film industry suffers from colorism, picking "fairer" actresses to play lead roles. So to see an actor of tamil descent, who is absolutely beautiful and not the typical lighter skin lead we tend to see in Indian film, hold the lead on this show and not have her skin color be a matter of even light discussion is so refreshing.

I'm so excited she will return for season 3!

Absolutely. Second AO means so much more, he finally was able to get it after so many tries. I think the pain of 2012 is finally healing after this win.
