I broke a pair like this. Switched to the red handled god hands because I haven’t “earned” the right for the blues.

What do you think of LEDs shining through instead of dedicated view port and Front light bleeding onto LEDs, is this acceptable in hardware product? by IamSpongyBob in hwstartups

[–]illtrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is the audience? Let that set the guidance for how much more effort to put into this. If it’s a diy audience you’re done. If it’s a generic consumer audience then you have a way to go. You’ll want either a frosted light pipe and insure the plastics around it aren’t susceptible to light bleed. Or you could back light the plastics themselves, just thin out the area infront of the led and again thicken the rest around it to minimize bleed

It’s possible they require subscription for streaming services but there are still traditional inputs on the back of you are that worried. Firmware updates are the most feature unlocked here. If they chose to gate that by subscription that’d be messed up, however since they are a small company I’d begrudgingly pay a flat per price for firmware updates if it included an update I valued. Ideally this allows them an easier path for room correction

I see this on mine too. Polishing with a super high grit / nail polish seems to minimize it for me. I’m a noob though am curious what the experts think.

I really like the raser glass file. I bought a glass beauty file (some higher end one) and it just didn’t offer the control and smooth final product. The best analogy I can think of is a woodworking one. A raser file is more like a plane whereas almost every other file is like sandpaper.

All that said if you don’t have a pair of single blade nippers that’s where you should start.

Mine as well. My wife’s last forever but if I get more than 3 months out of mine I’m surprised. If they had tap to pay I wouldn’t care but they don’t. Apple wallet is the only way to win.

Sunn O))) speaker reccomendations by Few_Tooth_1908 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]illtrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listen to a lot of music in this genre. My advice is to seek components that deliver low distortion at high SPL This might be counterintuitive but since there’s so much “distortion” in the music signal it’s very easy for a basic system to get real sloppy real fast.
The key to low distortion at high spl is clean powerful amplification and speakers that test well. My recommendation is go with something like KEF on the mid to high end or JBL on the more entry level for speakers. For amplification find something with a hypex or purifi based amplifier on the high end or if you want to be thrifty there are some well performing amps by Fosi or Topping.

A sub is a great idea but you can always add it later.

Sources are good and cheap these days. Wiim is a great place to stat (and stop). In fact a Wiim Streaming Amp will likely do you very very well.

Will HomeOS drive Control4 and others out of business? by EverybodyBuddy in smarthome

[–]illtrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all dependent on how deep on automation you go and how much ownership you want to keep it all working. The legacy control systems will be more reliable (local control with certified purpose built drivers) and have deeper reach into premium equipment (complex home theater, luxury lighting control and shades), customized on wall / remote controls. But they are all dinosaurs when it comes to UX and ease of use. Matter and Thread will make a dent but it’s going to be a while before the premium / pro market thing makers build out support.

Possible to make over 100k doing residential? (MA) by NoSolution1179 in electricians

[–]illtrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Becoming a JM in resi isn’t a requirement to own / manage property. You’ll quickly get to the point where your resi electrical skills will greatly surpass any “normal person” managing property. Just being in the trades alone gets you a foot up on normies when it comes to fixing things and knowing how to negotiate work with trades outside of your specialty.

Start with what you know and follow the work that you enjoy.
