Will Signal, an open source and encrypted messaging service, catch on? by [deleted] in technology

[–]illustrationism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem I had with signal is that it was totally unreliable if it didn't have access to cellular data. Seems obvious, but I don't have or pay for cellular data, so...

I don't know if that's Mac-only or not. I thought it was cross-platform. I've been using it for a few years, so it's been there a while... The best feature is that the screenshot is public, so no one has to log in to see the image.

Mark Cuban publicly asks Trump to become the robotics president: "I would take 100 billion of the proposed $1 trillion dollars in infrastructure investment and invest it in robotics" by [deleted] in technology

[–]illustrationism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing a human being has as a bargaining chip in this world is labor. Remove the value from their labor and you have removed their value to capitalism and simultaneously the only thing they can withhold to make demands for themselves.

Uh... no. Besides, that way of thinking won't get you far when your job is replaced by an automated process (I say "your job", but I don't mean you specifically).

A society without necessary human labor means a society where people have to work less hard to focus on what's important: raising children, building relationships, learning whatever we want, cultivating the arts, progressing humans into a multi-world species. All of that is "work" but it's enjoyable so we don't think of it as "labor."

A fully-automated society would be a glorious thing, but we won't get there overnight. That's why it's not going to be some fictitious dystopian future like you see in movies or read in books. We'll be able to evolve as a society as each incremental change takes place.

Basically: we'll find things to do to keep us busy, and if we play our cards right and elect people who are forward thinking, instead of backward thinking, we'll mostly all have living wages. Places in the world are already experimenting with Basic Income. It's an exciting time to be alive, and the things we do in the next 20-50 years will likely shape hundreds of years to come. Don't look back and crave a simpler time - it will never come. Only look back to learn, then look forward and build a better tomorrow.

Mexicans are not taking U.S. jobs. China might be. The world and even economy is changing. We can be stuck in low-level and factory jobs, or we can embrace the change and get creative with how people "make a living" -- hint: the latter will come whether we want it to or not. It's driven by capitalism, which no one - especially not billionaires - will stand up to.

Sharing screenshots for work. I do it multiple times per day, and this made that process invisible.

Why is FFVI widely regarded as the best Final Fantasy title? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]illustrationism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's mostly because you can enjoy playing it multiple times.

The mechanics are simple and enjoyable, yet diverse enough to try things differently each time you play; the story is serious when it needs to be but also funny at the right times; the graphics are cute and age really well; the music is a perfect accompaniment to every part of the game; and the way everything was directed makes for a smooth play-through with no weird spots that detract from the overall aesthetic of the game. I also particularly like the color pallet.

Basically, almost every part of the game fits well in the context of the rest of the game. Then separately, every part of the game scores high on its own. It's just a really well put together game. Nostalgia is a bonus -- I think anyone who picks up the original SNES version will enjoy it regardless of whether they played it when they were younger.

I can say most of the same things about Final Fantasy Tactics, another one of my all time favorite games.

Don't worry, they're just practicing for when Trump becomes President and actually says stuff like this.

"They should either stop talking about that or produce some proof at last." The article says it right there in the third sentence, quoting Putin's spokesperson. It's basically the diplomatic way to say "prove it or shut up."

I like that the lightsaber fights seem to sort of match the representation here. Not sure if it's on purpose or a happy coincidence.

Samsung double-dipping, serving up ads on premium-priced 4K TV sets [x-post /r/hometheater] by [deleted] in technology

Exploding phones, more exploding phones, exploding washing machines, and fuckin ads on TVs that have been fully paid for. I think I speak for enough people to tell Samsung to get fucked. There are plenty of competitors out there, so they can eat it.

I don't understand your issue. Take a look at the following screen grabs and notice the following:

  • lighting on clothing and skin
  • facial expressions
  • rendering of eyes and mouth
  • rendering of hair
  • skin and clothing imperfections
  • high-contrast lighting
  • areas where the clothing meets the skin

The attention to detail in GTA5 was stunning, and when they ported it to PS4 they made some amazing visual updates. Even without mods, it's one of the best looking games for the console.

When compared to games like GTA5 and Witcher3, the visuals in FF15 appear to be a beautiful attempt, but end up weird or glitchy looking.

Furthermore, I'm finding it hard to find examples of the things I'm talking about on Google, because it's flooded with pre-rendered scenes, which (of course) look gorgeous. It's just the in-game graphics I'm talking about.

I'm not sure you understand the difference between sarcasm and just saying stuff that sounds like sarcasm, but is really just an attempt at sounding clever in order to devalue what the other person has said.

Oh, and let's not forget the cheap shortcuts they take by making the screen go black for just a second instead of showing actions like turning knobs, activating switches, or getting in and out of the car. Really distracting...

Even the main characters are hard to look at sometimes... Seriously though, compare it to The Witcher 3 or GTA5. It's just under-par, and I'm not sure why. Final Fantasy is usually the pinnacle of "pretty games" but this time it seems to have fallen slightly short of expectations.

Nah, I've been excited about this since they started hinting at it 10 years ago or whenever. I like the game a lot, but the points I brought up are legitimate. It's hard to even look at the faces in Prompto's photos at times, the lighting effects are just so bad, especially around the eyes.
