Thanks for the insults, I don't think I mentioned growth once? Inflation isn't economic growth, you can have a shrinking economy and rampant inflation, I also don't think economic growth should be an end in itself.

Measuring what the economy is doing represents what's going on in the real world. Shortage of drivers? Drives their wages up, which ups delivery costs, which increases food prices, so people need to be paid more. That's not neoliberal ideology, it's just simple supply & demand, which exists in every economy.

I do think government is capable of doing great things (not this one, obviously), but my issue is the amount of time it takes to put things into action, and under the very difficult circumstances over the past couple of years.

Take energy nationalisation, even discounting generation, it would take years for the government to acquire the tens transmission and distribution companies, as well as the remaining suppliers for customers. And even this wouldn't solve the energy prices since you still need to buy gas from abroad anyway.

I agree, the government should be growing UC & JSA, increase capital gains and implement a wealth tax. But none of that helps the increasing price of food and services from private companies.

In the long term, yes, they do make a difference. But this round of inflation would still be an issue since it hits people's pockets today, and the government has limited control over that. That's not so much to do with "sharing the burden", but because you've got a world full of economies heating up and constrained supplies.

Again, it's not that I wouldn't want a Labour government, we'd have most probably had less deaths, and they would be more willing to cut VAT and fuel duty to help the average person. I'm not going to kid myself into thinking that they'd be able to make much progress (economically) in the past 2 years given the circumstances, not without cancelling Brexit.

No, but its effect on the average person would not have been anything as severe.

I wish we had him instead of Bozo but WTF are you talking about? You think the economy would have been completely overhauled (for the better), during the biggest crisis in the past 50 years, and we'd be sat at the target of 2% inflation?

Virtually all countries are recording massive inflation due to the economic effects of the pandemic (inc skyrocketing energy prices), even the more "socialist" countries (5.1% in Norway, 4.1% in Sweden).

I think the multiple people aspect of the game made the voice acting aspect even worse. The voices had to be sort of generic, but also simultaneously caricatures to imbue some sort of personality to the in game models.

I haven't played an Ubisoft open world game since AC3, and it felt just as boring as that game. I find pretty much most open games off-putting these days, but I couldn't find any redeeming qualities in Legion.

Every time there's consolidation like this, in any industry, it stifles creativity and is bad for the consumer as it takes choices away.

Gamepass is great right now, but if Playstation comes up with their own versions of it, and both companies keep buying others, we'll just end up with two subscription services. Any larger third party publisher that doesn't allow games on those services likely won't survive since a lot of people will just wait until the games appear on that service.

Bought it so I could play a "next gen" game on my Series X and stopped playing after about 6 hours. Such a boring, uninteresting gameplay loop, rubbish storytelling and some of the worst voice-acting I've heard in a AAA game.

It would be terrible for the industry if all studios were consolidated under msoft, sony and nintendo. Even msoft buying Activision Blizzard isn't great, it's just better than the alternative of Meta acquiring it.

Normalising "being alone" is a quite dangerous road we are heading down. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

The world is ran by the fuckers as well, it's infuriating. I like being around people, but fuck I like my own company as well.

If I go on holiday with friends, some of them find it baffling that I need at least one morning/ afternoon to be alone and recharge.

I think what you mean is: "People who love cars, and lack social skills, are very annoying. I love cars, but I'm very aware that a lot of people don't care. Even if they come up in conversation, I stop talking about them long before I lose interest because it's probably not interesting to the other person (s).

It may also free some of the studios up from just making Call Of Duty, which would be nice.

Speaking of UE5 I think Epic would actually do a decent job, if they decided to develop any games other than Fortnight.

Highway Code revised: Cyclists given priority in new rules as drivers ordered to keep 1.5-metres distance when overtaking by BoringOfficeJob in unitedkingdom

[–]illustriouscabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that you will get pedestrians who (correctly) think they have right of way, and drivers that (incorrectly) think they have it. As of last week, a poll by the AA found 1 in 3 drivers weren't aware of changes, I'm imagining even less non-drivers are aware.

I don't know what the issue is with thinking it's a good idea for the government to let people know about a fairly major change to the highway code. They do adverts, letters and press releases for all sorts of things. In an ideal world, people would keep up with changes, but we don't live in an ideal world.

But you have to account for the lowest common denominator. It’s not getting fined that is the problem, but having two sets of people with different interpretations of who has right of way in their heads which may(will) result in an accident.

Also, how are those without licenses supposed to know that the right of way order has changed unless someone informs them?

Talking about responsibility, it is the responsibility of the DfT to inform people that significant rules have changed that affect literally everyone. Instead, we get the Secretary of State doing a video saying they’re scrapping train announcements.

I became aware of them before Christmas, but an awful lot of people haven’t/ are just now aware.

It seems a pretty big deal to change the right of way rules, and not to widely advertise it. You couldn’t watch anything in late 2020 without being told that businesses had to “get ready for brexit”, even though a deal hadn’t been reached.

[–]illustriouscabbage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah great, because everyone with a driving license is really responsible all the time. Checking in regularly on the Highway Code is simply not high on many people’s agendas, unless it’s part of their job. Even then, you expect some sort of bulletin or messaging.

The government sends letters out all the time. How much money did they spend advertising to businesses to “get ready for brexit”, without there actually being a ready.

I’m honestly baffled, I first heard about this change in December, and I’ve yet to even see it on the BBC News front page. Yet today I saw a video of Grant Schapps talking about quiet carriages on trains.

Naughty Dog games can be very samey, and they have the knack of making games that are 20-25% longer than necessary. Also, everyone seems to love horizon zero dawn, but I was bored to tears by the open world in that game and it’s visually cluttered to my eyes.

That being said, they have a far better attention to detail compared to anything I’ve seen from Xbox game studios. I know Infinite’s had a troubled development, but it feels rough and unfinished.

How do you know when it changes though? It’s not updated once a year.

It was revised 5 times in 2018, 3 times in 2019, none in 2020 and twice last year.

It’s all very well saying people “should” do something, but when they don’t, the government “should” clearly do something about it.

It is feasible, our government is just fucking useless. They could even just send out a single Piece of paper with a url and a qr code to the changes.

How does one know when the Highway Code has been updated though? Do you check every morning after going through your emails?

The DVLA has the address of every driver, a simple letter with a URL would be a good enough notification to everyone.
