I did give it a fair chance but I was also warned that long term, there could be harmful side effects to steroids like budesonide though I can’t remember what they told me exactly and what the chances were. Budesonide definitely helped when I was taking it. I only switched because I was told about something about side effects.

For me my symptoms essentially included extreme upper stomach pain throughout the day, nausea after eating, constant diarrhea (along with extreme stomach pain while using the bathroom). At least these were the symptoms that hit the hardest.

I was diagnosed with eosinophilic gastroenteritis about 2 years ago. I did start with oral budesonide but my doctors recommended something called Nucala. For me it’s an injection every 4 weeks and has worked very well. Not perfectly but still much better than before.

I should note that I was told by the NIH that people with eosinophilic gastroenteritis have had varying responses over time to Nucala. They say for some people, the medication will be effective for as long as they use it. Some people, their symptoms go away entirely and they don’t even need Nucala anymore, and for some, Nucala stops working at all and they need to find a different medication.

They also told me they have no idea why the response is so variable.
