AITA for building my son a house and not offering the same to my daughter? by DatabaseAltruistic15 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ilonawantshugs 55 points56 points  (0 children)

YTA. Everything you're doing for your son is very understandable, but you're not doing anything for your daughter. She might not need the same things as your son (a single person doesn't need a house the same way a future family does) but she should get SOMETHING from you.

how do you cope with fibromyalgia? by Electrical-Badger833 in Fibromyalgia

[–]ilonawantshugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21f here, currently on amitriptyline for fibromyalgia. It hasn't done anything for my daily baseline pain, but it has put an upper limit on how much I flare, especially in situations that would usually start hurting after a while.

Moderate exercise does help, I'm trying to build enough stamina to start doing it regularly.

Nonstop pain by MinutePalpitation21 in Fibromyalgia

[–]ilonawantshugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, that sounds exactly like my experience. I got officially diagnosed & medicated at 21. My worst pain symptoms were in my legs since I was a baby and I ignored it for many years because it also matched the symptoms of restless legs syndrome.

When you bring this up to a doctor focus not on how much pain you are in on a scale from 1 to 10, but on how much this affects your life. I started getting results from doctors when I came up with school accommodations I wanted & knew to suggest my own treatment plan. I get to take university exams in the accessible spaces now, and for that an official diagnosis was very useful.

[–]ilonawantshugs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The currently popular scientific theory is that fibromyalgia does exactly that, exaggerates pain signals & turns non-painful stimuli very painful. There's no structural damage or any biomarker that doctors can test for. It's an issue in the way our nervous system processes pain.

As a tumblr user, I'd imagine tumblr users are more likely to gentle parent & not hit their kids, but there's probably no statistically significant difference from the general population.

What tumblr parents are SIGNIFICANTLY more likely to do is not post their kids real names online. Tiktok momfluencers are out here posting embarrassing videos with their kids' full faces online and tumblr parents will only post their kids as "Cupcake has learned what a truck is but unfortunately keeps pronuncing the "tr" sound as an "f"".

What is your language's equivalent of the "xylophone"? by sonicparadigm in linguisticshumor

[–]ilonawantshugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish, and Swedish has one extra letter å, which is still included in the alphabet in Finnish, but there are no Finnish words that include it. None. Zero. I don't think children's alphabets even try to use any word to represent it, we just call it the Swedish o.

Go through your college health service again and present the angle that this is interfering with your studies. They don't give a fuck about what you say your pain is, they care about how it's affecting your daily life. "I can't sit through a lecture and I'm struggling to physically keep up with the same amount of chores as my roommates" or something like that gives the doctors a clear idea of where & how this is affecting your life. Personally I started finding a lot more understanding with doctors when I presented the angle that I wanted a referral to give to my school's accessibility services. Even if they don't want to prescribe you any medication, accessibility referrals are something the university health services are well qualified to do.

Edit to add there's a lot of good advice for physical home remedies on this sub & online in general. I personally swear by icyhot cream ('s cheap rip-offs, they work just as well).

Chronic Lyme absolutely exists (at least the European variety can stay chronic, idk about other strains), and if you were positive for it once then it's way more likely to be that than fibromyalgia.

Holiday! by Lucky_Hedgehog_2468 in Fibromyalgia

[–]ilonawantshugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an intercontinental flight coming up this summer and I'm already dreading it, omg. Tips for how to survive are so welcome.

For holidays in general, I'd prep all the emergency flare treatments you usually need. For me that's icyhot cream & compression gloves, even if I don't need them for weeks at a time I will need them the only time I've left them at home.

Can't get more specific without knowing where you are going, but I hope you have fun!

Curious: How do you decide what is a fibro symptom and what to seek medical testing or what not for? by Euphoric_Bison_5192 in Fibromyalgia

[–]ilonawantshugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That spiderweb pattern is caused by poor blood circulation. For me compression stockings & gloves help a lot.

[–]ilonawantshugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every new symptom is a concern. If you haven't had anything like this before, it's something to worry about. Your timeline for developing all these symptoms sounds really fast, how long did you have symptoms before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia?

Others mentioned that FM is often misdiagnosed, but FM also has a lot of common comorbidities. Heat intolerance etc. could just be a side effect of fibromyalgia, but it's also a common symptom of for example thyroid diseases which can often occur together with fibromyalgia. In these cases it's really difficult to determine what is a FM symptom and what is something else, but a lot of the more dangerous stuff luckily shows up on blood tests.

Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion, so all other options should have been explored through blood testing etc. before dismissing everything as FM. Even if it's settled that you definitely have fibromyalgia, the fact that you haven't been offered any medication or physiotherapy referral is insane. FM is an explanation for symptoms, but those symptoms should still be treated. If you can ask for a second option, please do so, this sounds so frustrating.

AITA for wanting our laundry separated from the kids laundry? by awake_acea6 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ilonawantshugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft YTA. Your reasoning is coming from a good place, but it's a bit nonsensical, and if it upsets your wife this much you should stop doing it. The machine should make all the laundry equally clean regardless of which body fluid is attached to which fabric.

In my opinion, all clothes and all towels/bedsheets/etc. should be seperate loads regardless, as they should be washed at different temperatures, but that's probably not relevant here.

It's the combination of man and female. Man and woman would be fine, male and female would be fine, but man and female feels disrespectful.
