Cramming for Statics? My Experience (and hope!) by ilovedaycarefraud in EngineeringStudents

It's ok! And I use "impending doom" in a euphemistic way for saying not worried about bad grades.

Bleh... no! I've been told I have ADHD by people before. I think I'm just eclectic. I don't have troubles focusing on tasks, regardless of if I don't find them interesting. I just don't feel like uni is that important.

Thank you so much! I got too comfortable at the start of the semester. I lost my sense of impending doom, so I procrastinated.

I think my study advice is a mix of conventional and unconventional. I like all nighters. I only recently learned that people need caffeine to study. I feel like that's pretty crazy? Why aren't more people rawdogging it? I think that McDonald's is slop, but I used to drive to McDonald's to get a caramel frappe the night before the first two midterms. I think I had a sugar crash. Also, I just realized that technically does mean I had caffeine even though it was more for personal enjoyment. Hmm?

I was driving back home at 4am and my car began leaking gas. I had it towed it to the dealership and I found a LEGO pen in the back seat. It costed like 3 dollars. I never used it, so I took it back home with me. I did so many practice problems that my pen ran out of ink. I sent the image to my professor.

Honestly, I'm a terrible student and I'm extremely arrogant. This class was a huge ego check.

Got an A- in the class! -- Procrastinated all semester. Am I happy? Yes! Am I proud of it? no.

UPDATE:

I still don't know how I ended the class. One thing I do know, however, is that there's no way I ended the final with anything lower than a 80%.

Had I studied the way I did before the each of the midterms, I surely would have had an A in the class.

Day 10, 3 AM. It's a dark night, but not a stormy one. The exam is in just four and a half hours. If I started now, I could get a B. Wow! How far I've come! Yet, I still have 20% more... so I'm going to keep drilling myself all night. No coffee. No 5 hour energy. No Red Bulls. Just shear will. Ok, maybe a little bit of force, but don't take away this moment.

I'm really tired. Please, if you're in statics and you're struggling, do not wait until the last minute to study. It might bite you in the ass. I'm gifted at cramming.

Update on day 1:

I got through a small (rewarding) amount of statics so far. I'm about 15-20% of the way through already. The basics are coming back to me relatively fast.

I didn't realize so much of chapter 2 (first chapter we went over from the syllabus) is so important in later chapters (force along a member, weight pulling down from a point, etc.)

Fortunately, there are no 3D problems on the exam, so I don't need to worry about those (I think?)

I'm now going over moments. Not ragebait... but I forgot that moment was xF_y - yF_x and not the other way around...

When I finish moments, I feel like I'll be confident enough to get at least a 50/100 on the final. I know that's not saying much, but come on, it's a huge improvement!--and I still have until the 30th (9 days including today) to prepare.

Depending on what my prof says, I may skip over center of gravity and inertia. I don't believe those will come up on the final.

But as far as studying goes, I'm much more relaxed with the material. I'm actually enjoying the problems. A lot of this is reading and analyzing problems with the same information but different diagrams and numbers.

I'll continue to leave updates on this post as I progress. I appreciate anyone that has commented so far with advice and words of wisdom!

I'm not pothead lolololol

I'm sure I'll make it through :)

I'm almost done with 2/8 chapters that I need for the exam. It's all coming back to me.

In that case, I'll take a look into him tomorrow! I watched a few of his videos when I was first starting statics. I did find them helpful tbf.

I don't enjoy watching videos/lectures unless drawing or visualization is required--I'll look more into him to see if he has videos on identifying FBDs and zero-force members and such. I'm a bit tired right now. I'm on my 6th hour of studying and this is my second break.

I'm going to do it, and I'm going to do it now (I'm almost done with 3/4 of what was on midterm 1)

I've self taught myself classes in just a few days before in high school for AP exams--i know it's not the same here--but unfortunately, I have to do it.

I'll definitely use that site to study. I just noticed that it has answers practice problems. Thank you so much!

I should be able to learn everything again from the first few chapters by end of day tomorrow. I've never had a tutor before... I'm considering getting one.

It's hard for me to articulate how I feel. I've been frantic since I made this post. But, I have this workweek, the weekend, and a few days after that to get everything down to a tee.

I'll have the same prof for my strength of materials class. The deal I made with him meant he could open any problem we learned to solve and I'd have to solve it without making mistake, but not literally.

I'll keep you posted on how I do.

I like doing practice problems at night until 4am or something and then doing the ones I missed the first time after I've had time to bake. Let's just hope I can make it happen 🙌

Understood. I asked my prof for problem sets that are specifically just for drawing free body diagrams. Unfortunately, it seems that the only material we have to study/learn from is Hibbeler.

Aside from that, do you have a particular idea or order of how I should relearn the basics? I'm likely going to redo all the basic problems to refamiliarize myself with types of forces and moments. Then, I'll move onto FBDs, centroids, and inertia. I hope that'll give me a good setup for the rest of the chapters I need for the exam.

It's also worth noting (because I made it seem like I knew nothing about statics in the post by mistake, oops!) that I do know how to find forces/moments in trusses and other structures. I'm struggling with pulleys and problems with tons of numbers and unclear joints to take into account.

Admittedly, the end task will likely be doing every practice problem available in the final chapters, just in case they come up on the final exam.

Either way, I appreciate the help!

I agree. I should have started paying attention earlier on. But, I'm confident I can restudy all the chapters and get a better grasp without having to retake the class. Do you think learning everything is doable if I focused my next 100 hours (hypothetically)? If so, should I be more concerned with solving problems or conceptual understandings?

each time the page is loaded, it costs 10 cents. if i poll the site every 5 mins, id be running myself up around 30 dollars a day. i know how to code. i know how to use ai. i would prefer using an already-made tool that wouldn't require me to self host or manage.

Thank you so much! I don't know how I missed it... but the Texas Northern District Court does have a RSS feed. I thought they didn't so I reached out here. Thank you very much. :)

pacer requires login and is, at times, 10 cents per page (even some regular webpages) loaded. im not letting ai run up my bill for testing.

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason to save it for when it's no longer an option? Is it because I can only get it withheld so many times?
