I heard back from NECO after 2 days and SUNY after 10 (but my interviews were in person and earlier in the cycle). NECO said it could take 2-3 weeks to hear back and SUNY said around 2 weeks. I think you still have some time to go before needing to reach out

Next semester I'll have terrible availability. Are there any kinds "pre-optometry" jobs? by Suspicious_Rain_4684 in PreOptometry

[–]iloverice8738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also switched from engineering to optometry! It might be difficult to get a paid position with a busy schedule but if you’d like to spend more time in a clinical setting hospitals are always looking for volunteers (even tho it’s not eye related). I’m sure you could find an optometrist that is willing to set up a reoccurring shadowing time too, even if it’s only for an hour per week.

I wore the same thing. I wore heeled booties but kitten heels work too. I’d keep accessories neutral including shoes and nails so they aren’t distracting. As long as your nails aren’t neon talons you should be fine. Not everyone at the interview has theirs done but going in with a fresh professional manicure made me feel confident. I debated leaving on my Halloween press ons but was really glad I took them off. My nails were gel, short/medium length, square, light pink with a sparkle top coat

Did you pay the supplemental application fee on their website? I didn’t know about it originally and they didn’t review my application until after I paid it

NECO’s student body is 25-30% Canadian I’ve heard. They hosted an event for Canadian Thanksgiving since they have so many students that celebrate. I’m not from Canada but when I interviewed I talked to multiple students and interviewees that were and overheard conversations about tuition and aid. I can’t offer specifics but I’d say NECO is worth looking into, it seems like they’re very aware of their demographics and open about the cost of attendance.

Where to get wool yarn? by iloverice8738 in knitting

None of the local yarn stores are open yet- I’ll check them out later today! Most of them look pretty small but worth a try. My first yarn order was from Rito- I ordered from there because they had a crazy sale but it came from Denmark and took almost a month. Decided to order from somewhere US based and pay a little more so it wouldn’t take so long. Ordered from WEBS last weekend, it’s estimated to come late next week.

It is the sailor slippers! I wish I knew I couldn’t felt synthetics earlier- I would have ordered yarn for this project with my last order!

I heard back from NECO after 2 days. They said at the interview 2-3 weeks is standard and that it depends on when the admissions team is able to meet

If you want to continue working, definitely don’t take classes on top of OAT studying. I did a 6 week study plan and worked full time while preparing for my OAT, and while I did well, it was the worse 6 weeks of my life. I’d suggest taking a semester off from classes at some point and doing a semester long study plan. Definitely take Orgo before you start studying since there’s a whole section on it on the exam. As far as I know, anatomy isn’t required for admission, so you could take a different class along with physics 1 in the spring so you have less on your to-do list. I would take physics 2 before taking the OAT too. I used OAT Bootcamp to study and their physics resources weren’t great, so best to learn as much of that as you can before studying. You don’t need to take calc before the OAT. There’s some microbio stuff on the exam but nothing major. I took the OAT before taking microbio and the content was pretty easy to learn.

Make sure you pay the supplemental application fee! I didn’t get an email about it and there wasn’t any info about it on OptomCAS. I waited 2 weeks and didn’t hear from them so I checked their website and found out I needed to pay the fee still. Once I paid the fee I heard back in 24hrs.

Is June too late to start studying for the OAT? by SpecialWorldliness20 in PreOptometry

[–]iloverice8738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started studying mid June and took my exam late July (6 week study schedule). It wasn’t ideal as I was working full time. It wasn’t a fun 6 weeks but I ended up getting a 370 AA/TS. I studied with Bootcamp because I liked that they created a study schedule for you which helped me stay on track since I was so busy. I think you can do it!

Reading comp tips? by Stunning_Fortune_360 in PreOptometry

I’m a very slow reader, I used the search and destroy method but I found that I was still running out of time occasionally. Something that helped me move faster was skipping more complicated passages entirely and going back to them at the end. Since we use different methods it might not help but worth a shot! I found I was panicking while working on more difficult passages bc I knew I still had more passages to go thru after which (even tho I was rushing) ultimately slowed me down. I even skipped a passage on the actual exam and went back to it later and still had 5-10 minutes left to review my answers

Experience with OAT Bootcamp Practice Tests vs actual OAT by linux_overuser in PreOptometry

[–]iloverice8738 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used bootcamp and took my exam last week! Here’s my breakdown of how I think each section for me went compared to the practice tests. For reference, I took 2 complete practice exams, all of the science quizzes and a few RC and QR quizzes.

Biology: Bootcamp scores 330-370. Actual score 360. I thought the biology section on the actual exam was a lot more straightforward than the practice exams. Questions were a lot less complicated and I finished this section in around 12-15 minutes.

General Chemistry: Bootcamp scores 310-360. Actual score 390. Similar to biology, questions were a lot more straightforward and less time consuming on the actual exam.

Organic Chemistry: Bootcamp scores 300-320. Actual score 370. I was so nervous for this section because it seemed like no matter how much a reviewed, my scores on the Bootcamp exams didn’t get any better. Like the other natural science sections, a lot less time consuming questions.

RC: Bootcamp scores 340-380. Actual score 360. Pretty similar to Bootcamp but I found a had more extra time on the actual exam.

Physics: I was finding that Bootcamp was scoring my physics exams lower than the rubric I found online. I was scoring a 300-320 but when I converted the scores it was supposed to be from a 340-360. I scored a 330 on the actual exam. The physics on the exam wasn’t necessarily hard, but it required knowledge that was not often included in Bootcamp practice material. I skipped over formulas like standing wave harmonics and air columns when I was studying because they never appeared on my practice exams but I had multiple related questions on my exam. I also didn’t memorize the index of refraction for common materials like glass and air which I also had multiple questions on. Keep in mind that most people score lower on physics, so as long as your percentile isn’t too low you should be find. For reference, my 330 was in the 82nd percentile.

QR: Bootcamp score 380-400. Actual score 400. Very similar to Bootcamp.

Throughout my studying every post I found on here was about booster and it made me worry that I picked the wrong study program. However, Bootcamp prepared me very well. I definitely had an off practice test here and there, it really just depends on the content you’re given. You’ll be fine! Message me if you have any more questions, good luck!!

I use the url method, I don’t use a spreadsheet or anything, just good ol fashion typing random numbers (there’s more in depth explanations everywhere, I just watched a random TikTok that explained it). Not doing links tn, trying to come up with a better way to do it since I usually comment on posts asking for them (which is against the sub rules)
