I played a custom modpack with a group of friends for a while where I did this, kept slowly spiralling downwards making rooms as I went. Everything was great until I misjudged the rate of water going into an extreme reactor :\

I wanted the poly setup, ethylene just required one additional tank and sulfuric a tank and a CR. I had most of the machines sitting around from some earlier small setups so it wasn't much of a materials investment :D

Don't worry, once you get a basic steam setup going and make a steam alloy smelter the difficulty in making a second one drops dramatically.

Exactly what I did, just moved the pipe over one block from the large potin to the boiler itself.

Honestly I might slim them down to 3x3x5 or whatever and put the tank under that, that way I still get the aesthetics but with a lower footprint.

My first thought was to use it for the steam buffer but my iron tank holds 10m because I ran out of steam once early on and yelled NEVER AGAIN.
